Great!Bought four of the 4GB size of these two years ago. I use them to play MP3 files on the stereo system in my car. Great for those units with a front USB port. A regular memory stick is very easy to bump and damage because it sticks out from the front of the unit. These are so inconspicuous most people don't even notice they're there. Also there are no flashing lights to distract and annoy you on night drives with the dash lights turned way down.A couple of reviewers have said these failed. Not so for me. I don't baby them! They're stored in a plastic 35mm film canister (remember those?) in the console. Subject to serious temperature extremes...and constantly being rattled around against each other. After two years of that treatment they still work fine and I expect they'll continue. One of them actually went through the laundry when I left it in the pocket of my jeans. Found it in there a couple of weeks later when that pair came up in the rotation. Still works!Some other reviewers claim slow read/write speeds. Not so. I haven't run specific tests, but the read/write times seem more or less the same as all the other USB 2.0 storage devices I use on my computers. And that's really the issue. They're USB 2.0 *not* 3.0. If fast read/write times are that critical bite the bullet and upgrade your hardware.5Do a good visual check before you plug this into your USB ports! It might not fit!I bought this so I could re-invigorate and old laptop by installing Chromium OS on it, which worked just fine. There more resistance inserting the drive which I figured was part of its Store n Stay design. I tested it on three laptops. When I tried it in my Lenovo and Dell laptops it was quite difficult to remove. The first, and last, time I tried it in my HP laptop, see pics, the blue top popped right off when I tried to remove it. I could not get this out of the laptop. I looked in the reviews to see if others had the same problem. I saw that this wasn t just a problem I had. Others did as well. I contacted Amazon so I could get permission to "carefully" remove it with a small set pf pliers. (CYA you know) Amazon wanted me to take it to a laptop repair business! After I got their "permission" I removed it and Amazon is sending a replacement. I looked in both ends and saw that the circuit board wasn t flat to the bottom ofthe metal USB case, there was a slight angle to it. I put the blue end back on and took two pics of the open and of the drive. On the left is another brand and on the right is the Verbatim. You can see that the opening is smaller. No wonder I had a problem inserting it, and removing it, in three different laptops! I saw one reviewer used a careful application of Loctite solution to hold the blue cap on. I may do the same when I get the replacement Amazon is sending, but only after I do a thorough visual check on it.1Not snug at all, hangs out a long waysSomewhat disappointed. Its easily at least as (long) as a San Disk Extreme (nano) flash drive and maybe longer. Its waay out from the USB port when fully seated and that's being quite generous. They get caught on everything and fall out a lot easier than they are marketed to do. I don't know why but it seems they have changed the manufacturing to be [even longer] than in the marketing photos and videos. They've added like half a centimeter such that they are pretty useless unless your very careful about not bending or knocking them out of the socket.. and they can and do bend and crush the USB port.. really as a line of product. Highly Not recommended for what they were marketed to provide.. a leave in place (small) USB drive. I think the complaints about hard to pull out of socket are bunk and not true, the photos of the end caps falling off are probably the result of snags and getting knocked off while trying to leave them in place. This is my third attempt.. the "in socket storage" advertisement is just not true for this product line.. no one makes a true in socket USB drive.4Fine - until sudden deathNice form factor, worked nicely in my XP laptop as well as a Linux desktop. I left it in my laptop a lot and used it to transport data from Windows to Linux and between Linuxes in different buildings. It was very nice for that, although it was small enough I forgot it a few times.However, after 10 months of working it decided that it had had enough and all the data is gone. In Linux there a generic device, but no file system. In Windows XP it reports as a removable media device with no media in it. Upshot is that 8GB of data is now in silicon heaven. I guess that it pays to back up. But since this is advertised as a "store and stay" replacement for a small hard drive, this sort of early failure seems unacceptable.I tried cleaning the contacts and this did not help. Given that the device is seen by the two operating systems, I am given to suspect that the failure is inside the device.So my recommendation is to use it to transfer data, but not for storage of anything important or you may experience pain.2Great tiny size...but end pops off easilyWorks great as a fast memory stick. I wanted a memory stick that did not stick out too much and was not easy to break off when plugged in This device met those requirements. However, try to remove it... the little blue plastic cap pops off very easily. It is not meant to come off. Careful placement of Loctite solved the problem. This memory stick would be perfect if the blue cap was more secure and it had a loop for a keychain. If you need to plug in a memory stick and never remove it, then this thing is ideal.2tight fit - wont accidently be jiggled/removedLike others noted, its a very tight fit into the USB port. The cap came off on I've of the pair first try. 1/2 the time I use a needlenose plyiers to remove from the laptop used for testing/staging. The packaging hints that it's expected to stay plugged in permanently, and that is what I bought it for -- running an OS (ESXI) on it, and saving the internal drives solely for storage. The mini-server's USB connectors are such closely spaced, meant only for cables, that I may later want the caps removed anyway.5Problematic in cold Love that this flash drive is so tiny. I am using it to play music in my car, and it needed not to stick out far and cause problems. Also like the 16G size. BUT - over time, this flash drive has developed problems. Maybe I caused these problems, or maybe the drive isn't actually able to stand up to the rigors of being inside a car in the Midwest. Any time the temp has gotten below freezing, the flash drive malfunctions. It won't read at all, or it starts playing at a random spot, or there is a lot of noise along with the music. I am assuming this has to do with humidity and the circuitry in the flash drive. My flash drive now has about a dozen songs that have so much weird electronic noise in them that I can't listen. Even when I play music from the Flash drive on another device (in the house) the noise is still there. Clearly, the drive is damaged. Lol! I like that this is a very slim design and does not stick out of the laptop much. However, I noticed it does seem a little loose, like if you bump it, it will come halfway out! So not sure if it's just this one or if they are all like that. I have another one from another brand, and that one fits very tightly, without moving at all even if you bump it (which is pretty easy to do when the laptop is on your lap).3Not what I'd expect from VerbatimThe usb metal opening (rectangular casing) is slightly larger and off-center compared with my other flash drives and when I tried to insert it into the USB port in my iMac I had to use more pressure than usual. When I tried to remove the flash drive from the port, it was stuck and the blue top (handle?) popped off. I had to use pliers to remove the flash drive from my computer's USB port. I put the top back on but the problem persisted when I tried to insert the drive into the ports on my Sabrent USB 3.0 extension and on my MacBook Air. Then the electronics fell out of the case, the dried glue clearly visible on the bottom side of it. I don't know if it's a fluke or they are all like this--they have a serious problem with quality control--but this Verbatim flash drive is not going anywhere near my equipment. Save your $11 and put it towards a better constructed flash drive.I applied for a refund from Amazon and immediately received a postage-free label to return the item. By the time I got home after dropping the package off at the post office, Amazon had issued my full refund. Excellent customer service!1Ideal for use with a Car Stereo in the USB portI purchased the SanDisk Cruzer Fit CZ33 8GB USB Flash Drive, and I am 100% satisfied. I use it in the USB port of my car stereo. Its great advantage is that it is virtually flush with the front of the control panel. It does not protrude. My only disappointment is that the car stereo does not recognize the playlists, but that is the fault of the car stereo not the SanDisk Cruzer.There are no cables connecting to the car stereo as is necessary with an MP3 player or Ipod. The tiny flash drive stays always in the car stereo's USB port. There is no need to carry the player to the car.In case you are comparing to the Verbatim Store 'n' Stay flash drive, the Verbatim is slightly larger and does not have a dust cap. If you have big or clumsy fingers, the Verbatim is a little easier to grasp. I also purchased the Verbatim Store 'n' Stay flash drive, and I am also 100% satisfied with it.5Perfect for ReadyBoost duty!I purchased three of these for use with the ReadyBoost technology built into our Windows Vista/7/8 PCs. ReadyBoost transfers your read/write cache to the flash drive from your hard disk which saves energy and boosts overall performance.This 4 GB flash drive is the perfect size in three ways: 1) ReadyBoost can only use a maximum of 4 GB; 2) the drive is compact and does not stick out so they do not ram up against the wall or have cables catch on them; 3) Since you dedicate the entire drive to ReadyBoost you should never have to remove it. This negates the complaints about it being so small that it is hard to remove and/or easy to lose.When you first plug in the device, a dialog opens and asks you if you want to explore it or use it for ReadyBoost. Click the ReadyBoost option and activate it in the next dialog. You will see a noticeable speed difference and it is particularly useful if your RAM is physically maxed out.I specifically purchased this brand because I read that the transfer rate on other similar flash drives were too slow and required special formatting in order to work with ReadyBoost. True to form, It did not need any special formatting and worked perfectly right out the chute.5Flushest Fitting Thumb Drive Thumb drives are pretty much a commodity item - assuming the read write speeds are reasonable for your application (more on that later). The most important factor these days seems to be size - length - and boy have they shrunk!The first shrunken thumb drive I purchased was the HP v165w 16 GB USB 2.0 Flash Drive P-FD16GHP165-EF (Blue). HP is a good name (its apparently really made by PNY, another good name), but "Verbatim" was new to me (except for remembering the name as a floppy disk brand).Turns out it works fine. Transfer rates when I move smaller music files or larger video files to and from the thumb drive are comparable to other high performing thumb drives and SD cards.So I can safely recommend this for portable storage. I use mine to move music and video files between Macs and Windows computers - I can't use (most of) my USB external hard drives for that purpose due to the different hard drive formatting between Macs and Windows - Mac can read a Windows formatted hard drive but not write to it (the exception is the Seagate which comes with an accessory program that loads onto the Mac). I use the Verbatim to add extra video storage space to SSD equipped notebooks I have, and it excels for this application because it won't get knocked out and doesn't have to be removed to place in the case.Where this Verbatim thumb drive excels is in hugging the side of the computer so it is less prone to get knocked around. It is also great if you have a car radio that can directly read music files from a thumb drive (many of the latest factory radios do this). That means you can put a heck of a lot of music on this 16gb version and your head unit (car radio) will essentially then become your MP3 player.The HP mentioned above sticks out considerably more in comparision, but is still much better than most thumb drives in that regard. The Patriot Axle is another thumb drive that is short - same length as the HP when the rotating cover is swung to the side to insert the drive. The Axle is turning up at Frys on sale and I highly recommend it on price and the rotating cover - I already lost the caps for the HP's I have, and the Verbatim doesn't come with a cover (on the assumption most users use it for car radios).There is only one problem with this Verbatim - it is so short it is hard to extricate from the USB slot! Not horribly difficult, but not the easy job for longer thumb drives with more to grip.A word on performance. SD card performance is very important for camera performance so you have to pay attention to Class rating. But Class rating is deceptive - the controller can be optimized for larger file transfers and do more poorly with smaller writes. For thumb drives, not used in cameras, it's questionable how fast a thumb drive needs to be to do its job of providing portable storage - we usually have other things to do on our computers while files transfer, and the transfer rate on this Verbatim, the HP and the Axle are all good. BUT if you want to use your thumb drive for two relatively rare operations - Ready Boost under Windows or running a Linux distribution in "live, persistent mode" then the small file transfer rate becomes important. I found this out when trying to run a live, persistent Linux distribution from an ultra fast Class 10 SD card - it was slow. In comparison, running it from the Axle thumb drive was faster. Why? If you insert your chosen card into Windows and run the "Ready Boost ready" test, Windows will see how good the thumb drive or SD card is for typical OS operations, and the Axle was fine, my ostensible Class 10 (the fastest) SD card actually failed that test (even though it could download camera photos as fast as it was supposed to). The HP was super fast on larger and medium sized file transfers, beating the Class 10 SD card; the Verbatim was slightly behind it.Some reviewers use utility programs to rate transfer speeds in different scenarios, and it is worth looking for those reviews if you are technically minded. 5
