The physical installation was pretty simple since it came with a single drive conversion ...I bought this drive to replace a regular SATA 3 500GB 7200 RPM drive in my Desktop PC that was starting to fail. The physical installation was pretty simple since it came with a single drive conversion bracket for installing in a 3.5" drive bay. BIOS configuration was a little trickier with Windows 8.1 on a desktop PC because it would not boot from the drive when selecting it as a normal hard drive. I had to select the newer boot options to get it to boot and it took a few tries to figure it out. When all was said and done, the performance boost was simply amazing. It used to take my PC a two minutes to get to the log in screen. Now, I get to the log in screen in about 8 seconds from power on. Everything runs noticeably faster than ever. It's almost like having a new PC.5SSD370 - 512GBGood results on 4 SSD's in Windows 8.1, 64bits . I entangled things while installing but fortunately I could find the way to clone properly. The main advise from my side is to be patient with the software response after launching it. Possibly my computer was performing some who knows what in the background and I didn't wait enough time for the Clone Program answer and I stopped the program, then I began again and more SSD unplugging and program stopping and other improper operations ( messing up is the song). Finally ( many hours later :( ) I discovered that SSD had lost it's driver so I reinstalled it via Control Panel - Administrative Tools - Computer Management - Device Manager - Disk Drives. Then I run the clone program, waited for ( a minute or less ) program to signal it was performing something and then waited for it to finish. Disks now are working nice and flawlessly. One of them under Windows10 Insider Preview ( BTW very comfortable to work with).4Very happy repeat customer: 5th purchase of same item, for installation in 5th computer!I know the headline might make it sound like we've had several failures, but the previous 4 have been running smoothly for last several years, have no reason to think this one wouldn't perform the same way :) Started with one laptop, very noticeable improvement in battery life and speed, swapped one into a second with same results, did same on parents' computers with same level of performance improvement, now doing the swap on in-law's desktop with (you guessed it) same satisfaction in the end result. As noted by others, no cables are included (not an issue for our installs), and you can download the cloning software for free -- plan to give it several hours to copy, it will take time if doing the entire 512GB bit for bit.Warning: the newer packages no longer ship with the 3.5" adapter plate! This plate is not used with laptops, but if you are looking at installing in a desktop/tower, this means you won't have a potentially critical part. (These adapters can be purchased on Amazon, or your computer might even have an existing 2.5 drive bay hidden somewhere inside.) In our case, we had a couple sitting around from previous orders, so this change was a non-issue to us, just want others to know what they are getting...or not getting.5Unreliable and short-lastingOriginally bought for a laptop when 500 GB were no longer considered a respectable amount for storage, it quickly got promoted to OS and programs (including programming IDEs, games, and distributed computing projects) for a desktop computer. There was a good amount of files moved, created and deleted, but not atypical of a developing environment, even a common office PC since duties were shared with a newer laptop since beginning 2016. Windows 7 was configured so it wouldn't cache writes on the disk, no scheduled defragmenting, taken good care of, which was even better with the upgrade to Windows 10 since almost 2 years ago. Beginning of this year I noticed the drive not being recognized sometimes when booting up, SSDScope utility reported a 5% life expectancy on the disk (actually it appeared the other way round, reporting a 5% wear, but I guess I either misunderstood or is not worded properly), a mere couple months after its 3 year warranty period had expired. Bracing for the inevitable I no longer used it for programs installation, personal files were moved, and I acquired a nVME drive. It's been about 2-3 months since it recorded and read its last bits, no BIOSes able to recognize it, its storage capabilities gone with its MLC technology limitations, a little blink of existence compared to its mechanical cousins and better prepared 3D-NAND brothers (or sisters, if you will).1Works good and is fastArrived fast and the price was right. Cloning my 128gb ssd to the Transcend 512GB ssd was easy. I just connected the transcend to an external enclosure via usb and used the program ssdscope which you can download for free from Transcend. Took about 1.5 hours but that was because my usb enclosure was limited to usb 2.0. It is much faster than my previous ssd and loads up my games faster. It also came with a 3-year warranty. It is also very light weight and weight almost half of the weight of my old ssd while containing more space and faster performance. I was able to upgrade my old laptop with the 128gb ssd as well while upgrading my main gaming rig with this 512gb ssd!5Great Product, Good PriceIt has been three weeks. Everything is good. It turned my five year old laptop into a new computer. Start super fast. Open programs super fast.1. The SSD and the Transcend SSD Scope software work perfectly with the latest Windows 8.1.2. If your computer is old, you need to check the BIOS to enable SATA interface. Older computers might use the IDE compatible mode, which will significantly reduce read/write speed.3. I think Transcend adopted a very good strategy of increasing the read speed and slightly decreasing the write speed. Our computers always read much much more stuff than writing stuff.4. Inside the SSD, it is Micron MLC NAND (aka Crucial) and Silicon Motion controller (this controller is inside many good SSD products). So, there is no reason to think the relatively new Transcend products are not verified by a large number of consumers. As many other reviewers had said, go and grab one Transcend SSD, you will be amazed by the performance of your old computer.5Read & Write = 424MB/s & 366MB/s! Impressed! [Updated: 5/11/2015]If you want to improve a laptop's performance, go for a SSD first. Performance with this drive is awesome. How awesome? Read & write from 77MB/s & 74MB/s jumped to 424MB/s & 366MB/s. Transcend is a well reputed company in flash storage, but their SSDs are not that popular. I dare to try one, and this drive is superb. My HP ENVY M6-k010dx is a AMD A10 Sleekbook, was suffering form occasional freezing, delay on startup. I was using 'Hibernate' to keep the startup time fast. I was looking for solution, but this notebook is very rare, there was no good forum about this attractive machine. I thought, its the slow RAM which was causing the problem & I bought 16GB Kingston HyperX RAM, those are fast RAM! But it wasn't the RAM! It was the slow HDD! My laptop's sequential read & write speed jumped up from 77MB/s & 74MB/s to 424MB/s & 366MB/s! Can you imagine the change?! And the performance of the laptop is buttery smooth. I don't hibernate any more! Ok, so the performance of the drive is fine, no complaints, thats why I'm giving it 5 star. BUT, cloning with its software was a pain. I couldn't clone & had to recover the OS from my recovery disk. I'll definitely recommend this drive despite the difficulty in cloning the OS.UPDATE: To clone the operating system, I tried 'Macrium Reflect', which is a free software, works GREAT for cloning or even to backup the OS. Here is the software: [...] . There is no need to add anything about the performance of the drive. Its great. Read speed is much higher than other overpriced drives, which is responsible to boot, run the operating system smooth & very quick app launch. Do not pay $25-$30 more for other similar capacity SSDs, buy one of these without hesitation. You're gonna love it, TRUST ME!!!EDIT: Alternative cloning software: "AOMEI Disk Backupper". Its free, but in order to do cloning, you'll have to share the software in any social media (Facebook, Google+ or Twitter) & copy/paste the link of the post in the software (annoying). But its a very good software with clean & easy interface. Thanks.5Great price point and it's worked fantastically wellGreat price point and it's worked fantastically well. I replaced an existing 96GB SSD and a larger platter drive - the move to SSD for all of my data/games/etc has been fantastic - my computer is faster than ever.Migration with the software was mostly easy - the software was a bit convoluted. I'd classify myself as an expert in hardware/windows. The tool got the job done but the partition on the new drive was only the size of the old drive - it was a direct clone. Windows 7+ thankfully allows online drive expansion as part of the OS - a quick trip through disk management sorted it out but I find it odd that the application didn't do it automatically after I selected to use the full disk space in their transfer app.5Works great... until it doesn'tTL;DR: Drive failed after 7 months. Got a replacement under warranty, and then the replacement failed 7 months later. When I first got this drive, everything was great. My laptop was much faster than it was before I switched to an SSD, and I'm never going to HDDs again!I did have a bit of trouble squeezing the drive into my laptop, as the heads on the screws that came with the drive were a tiny bit too thick for the cramped space inside my laptop, but I was able to get everything installed fine by using the screws from my old drive instead.Unfortunately the story doesn't end there. After around 7 months of use, the drive just flat out stopped working. My computer just blue screened one day and refused to boot up. After a bit of investigating I found that my hard drive had failed. Thankfully I had backups and the drive was still under warranty, so I simply sent for a replacement. After about 3 weeks of being stuck with my old, slow HDD, I finally got a replacement drive back from the manufacturer. I installed it, and once again everything worked fine... until another 7 months went by and the drive failed again. At this point, I think I'm going to buy a different drive instead. Having my hard drive fail ever 7 months just isn't something I want to deal with.2Every buying an SSD knows what a hard drive is and isn't I won't waste your time with that informationThis is a quality SSD w/ respectable speeds at a discount price. I purchased this during a Gold Box Deal for one hundred forty dollars. What a deal!Seriously, this brand outperforms the Samsung EVO (not the pro, but the evo). Every buying an SSD knows what a hard drive is and isn't I won't waste your time with that information. Something a little more productive to discuss is the the transfer process. If interested, read on:The Scope software is very simple to use. Install it on your current computer/ hard drive, stick your new SSD in an external case (or connect via SATA to USB cable) and click the "Clone" icon. It's that easy. No need for a boot/install disk.New windows machines have the Activation Key stored in the BIOS. Once the cloning is completed and you swap your hard drive Windows should pull your Key and activate automatically. Your desktop won't look any different when you reboot.I transferred approximately 90gb in less than an hour. (I don't recall the exact time....between 20-40 min using USB 3.0) I also pulled all pictures, movies from the hard drive and on to a flash drive to save time before starting the clone process.5
