    Slow write, fast read. Get a cup of coffee!Bought this card in a combo deal with a CF-HDD adapter. Therefore, I'm using it as a cheap SSD for an old laptop. Works, but random write is pretty slow, as expected. Multi-Level-Cell (MLC) cards like this one have a tough time getting decent speed with random writes so combine that with the card's automatic wear leveling and an NTFS file system, and it's gonna take a while to get anything done. Installing Windows took over two hours. I knew that coming into this since I didn't want to shell out loads more money for less space and figured I could deal with the slowness. But god it's so much slower than you think once you get using it.Read speeds, though, are pretty fast. Since access time is instant, that takes most of the delay out of loading Windows or other operating systems since it's just a bunch of tiny files and a 10 ms seek time on a typical HDD limits it quickly. This card doesn't have the fastest sequential read speed out there, but unless you're loading major files such as video or enormous applications, things should be OK. Though if you're looking for performance or have a newer computer, don't buy this over a full-blown Solid State Drive. It's not worth saving the money unless you have an old computer lying around with a fried drive.Also, to those who use these as hard drives, I *strongly* suggest ridding yourself of the swap/paging file in any operating system if you have the RAM to spare. Keep the thing as read-only as you can. It'll significantly boost your performance.The reason this doesn't get a 5/5 is because its write speed is far slower than I was expecting. I was expecting slow, but not practically floppy disk slow. 4Good for Seven Months Honda Navigation Owners Take NoteI am writing this review to help others save an expensive trip to the dealer if your Honda navigation system appears to quit working.I ordered this card in April of this year. Up until now this card has performed well for use as MP3 storage in our 2008 Honda Civic. However this week upon starting the car the navigation radio system would display only the first splash screen and then the screen with the warnings on it. Then it would reboot and start the process over again, continuously, until the car was turned off. At first I thought the DVD reader had failed so I tried troubleshooting that.I found that once I removed this compact flash card the navigation radio system started normally and all the normal screens appeared. I then tried to read this card in the computer card reader and found the card could not even be recognized in the reader. I tried the San Disk card in the reader and that card was read fine.I installed the older San Disk Ultra 8 GB in the Honda navigation radio system and the music is able to be played once again. I am giving this two stars because it did perform in an automotive environment which is generally known to be harsh for seven months. The San Disk Ultra 8 GB is over the Honda recommended size limit but works OK if you make sure never to exceed 999 files, remember that each folder counts as file too.I would recommend either the SanDisk ultra series or Kingston series in the smaller 2 GB sizes. These have performed well for years in this car. 2Excellent card, excellent price.I think if people would read reviews about what items like this are best for, there would be far fewer unhappy people when it comes to a purchase like this. I purchased two of these for my older Canon Rebel dSLR, as while searching for them and reading reviews, someone happened to mention that this was best for older items, such as my camera. I stopped looking at that point and immediately got two of them, in anticipation of a long camping trip to Yellowstone next month.. I take lots of photos, and actually ran a 2gb card out of space on a short trip last month. I have tested both of these out and they work great, I don't really know what else to say about them except that... they work as I would expect them to. Anyone having complaints that it's not working for them, I don't know why you think the shipping return isn't worth it.. if there is truly a problem with it, Amazon covers the return shipping, not you. 5Use your Camera to Format the CardI purchase this for my Canon Rebel XT which I primarily use for my outdoor activities photos; like camping, hiking, kayaking, scenic, and etc. Rarely do I use this camera for sport shots so the card's speed is not as much of a concern for me. Initially I verified I could write and read file from the new card using my PC and taking a few shots with the camera, everything appeared fine. But during its first field use after about 5 shots the camera displayed an error. It occurred to me the volume format or block size on the card may not be compatible with the camera. So I used the camera to immediately format the card in the field. The Rebel XT recognized the card size and correctly formatted it. After that I had no further problems and took about 50 photos that day. I did do a few burst photos and the speed appeared to be very good. Download speed through my PC's card reader was super fast. Those people that have poor download speed should verify their card reader and PC supports at least USB 2.0, USB 3 would be better, and the hard drive speed in their PC is 7200 RPMs. USB 1 or a slow hard drive can greatly increase download time. Also keep in mind a real time virus scanner can increase download time too. Since the volume format and block size on the card can affect write performance those concerned about photo transfer time to the card may want to verify they used the camera to formatted the card. The camera's programming should pick the correct volume format and block size for the best performance. Before performing the format you may also want to verify your camera is using the latest firmware version, if not consider updating it. As far as reliability only time will tell. 5nice doing business with you over there at Transcend4 years later and it is still functioning as it should.Although it should mentioned as I have a few of these cards that it is not being used full time, with that being said; if you are a hobbyist photographer on up, it is most advisable to have three to four cards all at different sizes and makes so that you may see any indifference's between them to fit your particular needs!BTW, and FYI, received this card in record time, nice doing business with you over there at Transcend! 5A bit Disappointed...I purchased this card to add to my arsenal of other cards. I had read on various reviews here about intermittent problems with this card generating errors. Having used Transcend and Kingston cards for YEARS and YEARS, going back all the way to 2001 and my FujiFinepix S1 Pro, And never having had a problem I went ahead and ordered.I received the card, formatted it in the D700, and tested it by just popping off a bunch of shots (about 30) shooting Raw + jpeg on my D700.Lo and behold, out of about 32 shots, TWO NEF (raw files) were unreadable in lightroom. Hmmmm.I then pulled out my D300. I formatted the card in the D300, Set it to the same capture jpeg+raw shot another thirty or so shots. And again I had ONE bad NEF file when I uploaded to LR3. How weird is that?I then inserted the card back into the D700, formatted it in the camera. This time I set it to capture ONLY raw (NEF) files. Popped off another forty shots. Had yet ANOTHER (1) bad NEF file.I immediately contacted Amazon for a return authorization. I received it within two hours from Overstock.com which is who shipped me the card, and a few moments ago this morning (3/10) the card is on it's way back courtesy of OS.com prepaid mailer which was emailed to me within two hours of reporting the problem.I'm very, very surprised at the problems with the card. I've used Transcent (8G) cards for years and years and have yet to lose a single image. I also use Kingston, and Lexar -- all 8G cards as well with no problems at all. I have never, ever had a card do this.I must say that I'm very impressed as usual with the service from both Amazon, and it's other sellers. I've yet to have a problem with a return.Hope this helps. 1Far too slow to use as boot driveI bought this card mainly to use in my 7 Mpixal camera, where it has adequate speed (replacing a x80 speed card). However, I checked to see if it was fast enough to use as a bootable flash recovery drive for my PC, it's not. I measured the load time of the Windows recovery files for this card vs my 64 Gbyte PNY Turbo USB 3 flash stick, which only costs about twice the price of this card. Both flash were connected to a USB 2 port. The load time for PNY flash stick was 24 sec and for this card 7 minutes, a speed difference of 17.5. 3How to use this card with your IPOD Mini 2nd GenerationI purchased this to upgrade my IPOD mini to 32GB and I couldn't be happier. Lots of storage for my podcasts, and much reduced energy consumption, meaning longer playtimes between charges.Hooking up the flash card is easy, if you've ever opened up and fiddled around inside your IPOD. You don't need an adapter, it slots right into where the hard drive is removed. I used a piece of duct tape to keep it from rattling around inside the case (it's thinner than the hard-drive).After the upgrade, my IPOD kept crashing when using the Apple-supplied software, so I switched over to the freeware software called Rockbox. To elaborate, my IPOD no longer has the interface of an Apple IPOD -- it's been rockbox'd. Rockbox is PC-based, and uses the FAT file structure. When you plug in the IPOD to the PC USB port it shows up just like any other external hard drive. You manage the content on the IPOD just like you manage files on a PC.So for about $30 (an Amazon 'Deal') I now have a 32gb IPOD that lasts 40+ hours per charge, and it's now much easier to manage the content (no more fiddling around with ITunes). 5Good for retro computers! Used it on an NEC PC-98.I used this card in conjunction with a Syba Dual Compact Flash CF to 44 Pin IDE adapter on my NEC PC-9821Nr15 laptop that I imported from Japan. If you know how to get it set up, this can be a very convenient way to transfer files without a floppy or CD drive. (Use a tool called CONV98AT to make the card compatible with both the PC-98 and modern computers). For an easy set up, image the YAHDI disk image (which can easily be found by googling) to the card.I partitioned it to have MS-DOS 6.2 and Windows 98SE, and it works like a charm. The speed is adequate, though not super fast by any means. Considering how this laptop can't support hard drives much larger than 4 GB (4.7 GB max, I think), my options for a suitable hard drive replacement were limited. Regardless, this can act as a good hard drive alternative for retro computers. I can't guarantee it'll work on all kinds of retro computers, but I can at least confirm that it works good on newer NEC PC-98 computers.PS: If you install a Windows 9x OS on one of these CF cards, do this tweak to help prolong the lifespan of the card.This helps prevent overuse of the pagefile in Windows, which normally creates excessive writes to the card. With this tweak, the PC will use all of its available RAM before paging.*Open C:\Windows\System.ini in Notepad.*In the [386Enh] section of the file, on a new line type: ConservativeSwapFileUsage=1 (leave a single blank line between the last line in [386Enh] and the next section)*Save the file and Reboot for changes to take effect. 5Great Compact FlashI was looking to give my Nikon D300 greater capacity for picture storage as I shoot everything at the highest resolution and while the Transcend name was new to me, I have found that the card works perfectly.My old card was a 4 GB (Kinsington) card I purchased a few years ago which cost a lot more than the new Transcend 8 GB. I am a "weekend" photographer, so my demands for memory cards are minimal. I just need the card to work and to be reliable.I was primarily concerned about the speed of writing to the card when taking pictures with the Nikon, and overall compatibility, and so far so good.I did a test of about 15 quick exposures and the D300 took about a minute to finish writing to the card.Typically I take landscape photographs and I don't do a lot of rapid fire exposures. I have no idea if the speed of the writing to the card is controlled more by the camera or the writing speed of the flash card.If you are looking for a great value, or "more bang for the buck" I can recommend the Transcend 8 GB 133x CompactFlash Memory Card. 5
