Sorry...These are just unusable junk!Wow...very disappointed!! I bought a TEKTON 1859 Wrench, Socket and Screwdriver Bit Tool Set (135-Piece wrench set) this past June and it was OUTSTANDING quality for a very reasonable price. So I ordered this TEKTON tap and die set to use as an emergency set at my ranch away from my main home shop where I have a very complete set of high quality commercial-grade HSS taps and dies (both metric and US). Unfortunately these Tekton taps and dies and their included wrenches are just unusable junk. The tap wrench fell in half the first time I went to use it...and the only reason I was using it was to see if chasing the thread on a good-quality 1/2-13 steel nut, would clean off the large burs visible on the taps cutting edges (see attached photo). Instead of cleaning up the tap, the poor quality tap just buggered up the threads on the nut. Clearly these taps, dies and wrenches are just unusable junk. Thanks to Amazon I was able to send the set back for a full refund. I still want an inexpensive tap and die set for the ranch....but this is clearly not it.SOME USEFUL BACKGROUND and WHAT I FINALLY BOUGHT I started buying taps and dies when I was in junior high school in the mid 1950s. These were Ace brand made of high carbon-steel and were carried by most local hardware stores back then. I bought them one at a time for a few cents each as I could afford them. They were an enabling technology for building small mechanical whatnots and I've been expanding my original set ever since. Now I have a complete set of American threads from 0-80 on up and a complete set of metric starting with watch screw sizes (1mm-0.2) to 18mm. Late additions include the various odd-ball metric threads used for panel mounted switches and potentiometers. Over the years I've learned that the high-carbon steel taps do an OK job for most small jobs where great precision is not required...you just want the threaded elements to be easily tightened and hold securely. Over the past 30 years, I've been mostly replacing the sizes of taps that I use most often with more expensive HSS versions with ground threads and adding some bottoming taps (to tap to the bottom of a hole) to augment my collection of mostly plug taps (the usual standard taper for through-hole tapping). The HSS taps with ground threads make a much cleaner thread and require less effort...like using a high-quality sharp knife as opposed to a duller cheaper one. They also stay sharp longer and can be used with stainless steel that would ruin a high-carbon steel tap. I buy most of my taps these days from industrial supply companies link Enco or Airgas, where I buy mill cutters and other shop tooling. They tend to carry a mixture of qualities (displayed side-by-side) including medium-quality imports, high-quality imports, and very-high quality (generally American made for industrial use). For my limited shop use, I typically go for the medium-cost high-quality imports, often from Spain, Poland, Israel, Japan, and now sometimes from China. These run about half the cost of the very-high-quality US-made items, and work very well for my uses. So where did I go to finally get some workable backup taps and dies for use on my Ranch...to Enco...where I bought a 39-piece set of HSS taps and dies, the same sizes as the TEKTON 7558 Tap and Die Set but HSS. I had to pay three times as much, and they're also from China with the same so-so quality wrenches, but the threads on the taps and dies are beautiful (see comparison photo)...they cut very well.1Good value for moderate duty workGave this 5 stars because of Tekton's customer service. Would have been 4 stars otherwise. One of the taps broke almost immediately. I called customer service, only had to select 1 option before getting a real person, didn't have to wait on hold and he knew his stuff. He asked a couple questions, apologized for the inconvenience and shipped out a replacement. The whole thing took under 5 min and my new bit arrived 2 days later. This is a great option if you're like me and will only be using it a few times a year. This isn't the set to buy if you're going to be using it on a regular basis. The taps work fine, but because they aren't the strongest metal, you have to take it SLOW. Stronger bits can take a little more abuse, so you can tap faster. It's that simple.Picked this up to tap 8 holes that the skid plates on my truck mount to. Two of the holes had to be drilled out first (sheered the heads off 2 bolts) and the other 6 were just widened so all the new bolts would match. Widening the 6 was very quick. The 2 holes I had drilled out were slower because I was removing more material, but it worked fine.Overall, I'm very happy with the purchase and would buy Tekton again.5Good set I bought this set as well as the standard set just so i have one on hand. I havent used any of the metric taps but have use several of the standard taps and they work great. the only thing that i dont like about these sets is the large tap handle. the taps tend to get loose and fall out. it grips the tap good and doesnt slip but the jaws loosten up a little and it can slide right out. as well as the design when you are trying to tighten it in there good the one side of the handle will unscrew. but i didnt buy this set for the handle, i bought it for the taps and the taps are great. i highly recommend for the average guy who occasionally needs a tap/die. i did go online and purchased a good quality tap wrench. 4Yes its not a top of the line tap and die set but you shouldn't expect that in this price range.I have used this set a handful of times and so far works as it should, as of now I have only used them in aluminum.Yes its not a top of the line tap and die set but you shouldn't expect that in this price range. I would say this is for occasional use vs a commercial/industrial type use. The tap and dies seem to be decent quality but the handles included seem to be a lower quality, they function as they should but feel cheap. It should be noted these have the round dies not the hexagonal dies you find in more expensive sets, again probably a slightly cheaper die to make but function as it should. Overall for my occasional use these are perfect I bought both SAE and Metric both sets are of the same quality. For the price your better off getting a set like this vs. buying a single tap and die at a big box store every time you need one.4good and sharpDecent kit. The taps and dies are solid, good and sharp, they clear chips easily. The die handle/wrench is good. The tap handle/wrench on the other hand is just OK. Its finicky, and has no way to tighten it beyond hand tight, which is not very tight given the pretty slick knurling on the little tiny handles. I did not buy this kit expecting to use it every day, or even every week, so this does not bother me much. If I do end up using it often, I will likely buy a better tapping wrench. The actual taps/dies are excellent. I used the dies to clean up a couple 1/2x20 bolts, and the 1/2x20 tap to chase a few jacked up threads in a crank shaft. I was a little concerned because this kit mentions that it is only for mild steel, and a crank shaft is certainly hardened steel. But they cut just fine. Chased out the threads and I was able to reinstall my Harmonic Balancer with ease.4Good quality. Just be sure all are metric.I have bougut lots of tekton tools as an alternative to paying more on tool truck. Almost always been satisfied with qualities of wrenches, sockets, scewdrivers, etc... So when was these I got them. First week used 3 times and work great! Second week needed to chase a lug stud thread and found out my metric set doesn't have the 12 / 1.25 die I needed! Instead my metric set has a SAE 1/8TH OR some rain thing in its spot. Guess I should have checked kit out with magnifier and made sure before used in crunch with customer waiting. Had to just buy a new stud and install but took your longer than it I had the right die.3Just spend a little extra and buy quality. You get what you pay for. To start, all the metal used for these taps and dies are very low quality. The tap chuck snapped in half with little torque applied to it because of a casting flaw. You can see in the second photo the air pockets in the casting. In the third photo you can see hairline fractures in a tap that's never been used before. Would NOT recommend.1WorthlessDon't waste your money. I paid "extra" for this so that I could thread the ends of a piece of carbon steel rod. Out of the box, the quality didn't look great, but the important part is the quality of the cutting part of the die. The die wouldn't cut. It wouldn't even start. I miked the rod and it is within tolerance. I spent 3 years working in a hardware store (the old style) when I was growing up and I know how to cut threads. I can't return this piece of junk, didn't get around to this job before the return deadline passed, but if you are considering buying one of these sets, don't.1Inexpensive but gets the job done.I needed a tap and die for a single project (replacing a broken bolt on my Harley.) The kit worked as expected taping a new threaded hole into the boss.Of course the set is inexpensive and the fitting, especially where the tap connects to the tool, is weak. It is fine for occasional work but no where near high quality tool standards. However, the taps are solid and I did not have a tap break off or even dull with a single use. I was also able to run through a few threads cleaning them out and clean up the threads on some bolts.4Good taps and dies. Useless tool holders.Did the job. Like others I'll say the tool holders provided are unusable, both broke out of the box which didn't concern me since I already own tool holders that unfortunately don't fit in this case. Oh well. I bought the set for the taps and dies, they worked well the first time I used them. If my existing tool holders fit in this case I'd have given it four stars. It was ironic my first use of the die was to try re-cutting the threads on the die holder, which was DOA. The threaded part of the die holder handle disintegrated. Very poor quality metal. Don't buy these for the holders, you'll be disappointed. I didn't. so I'm not. But it is sort of funny.3Hit And Miss With Tekton Products*Updated 04/27/2015* Ok, I upgraded the review rating from 1-star to 3-stars. The problems with the particular Tap & Die set I received still stand true, however a representative from Tekton reached out to me and in the course of email conversation on this matter, showed that the company does stand behind it's products if there is a problem. That is not something you find a lot of these days. As stated in my orig review below, I do own several other Tekton tools and am very satisfied with those and that along with the contact from the company rep on this problem, I would definitely give their tools another shot.Original Review:And this item is certainly a miss. I bought it mainly for the handles as its more cost effective to buy a complete set and have some spare taps and dies laying around than it is to just buy a couple of replacement handles. That said, this has got to be the lowest quality tap and die set I have ever seen. One handle arrived with the screws stripped and the other handle wont fit the 1/2" taps without a lot of force. Speaking of the taps, the 3/8" one has a good portion of the threads filled in with metal, making it totally useless for threading anything. I have several Tekton products and am rather happy with those, this on the other hand is lower quality than Harbor Freight. Might just be a bad set that they decided needed no QC inspection, I'm not sure. But it's going back to Amazon as soon as UPS arrives.3
