Black on Black vs Regular BlackThe Black on Black is what Denzel wears in the movie, HOWEVER the stop watch doesn't look like the movie and honestly it's way too hard to see the black on black display. I tried to like it, but returned it and got the Regular Black and it's fantastic, still learning to use the functions, but unless you have super vision the black on black is not practical, and I'm just talking about the middle section with the large print, the small icons and things along the edges are only readable in ideal settings. I'm 54 with decent vision, so again maybe with eagle eyes you'll be fine. Both are great looking watch's.5Customer service was awesome! I'm really glad that I made this purchase. I've been wanting one of these bad boys for quite some time, and after my third Timex breaking on me, I broke down and bought one.I really enjoy the stopwatch and countdown features, I use them all the time, and I find myself using the barometer more and more. We had a few storms roll through a few days ago, and it was amazing at how fast the air pressure dropped. After a few hours of the constant decline my weather alarm went off, and I though that was pretty cool. Due to where I live, I really don't have much need of the altimeter, but it's still a nice feature to have. The main reason that I bought the watch was for the compass feature, and it is probably my biggest complaint. Right after I bought the watch, it seemed as if I was constantly re-calibrating the compass, but it's getting a bit better. I don't have to do that near as often now, but that's the main reason that I'm giving it a 4 out of 5 stars instead of the full 5.Overall, I'm glad that I bought it, and if it holds up for awhile (I've only had it a month currently) then I'll buy another one.UPDATE:I've had the watch a year and a half now, and it's held up to some relative abuse. However, now it's starting to show some wear and tear. The watch still "works" great: the barometer and compass are still accurate, and I've only had to change the battery once. But, the buttons are starting to stick, and the screws on the band fall out about once a month and have to be put back in. I've had to buy several replacement screws. for it in case I lose the screws and can't find them.I wish it was holding up better, but I have worn it everyday for a year and a half: slept in it, showered in it, hiked in it, dropped it on concrete several times. That being said, a $30 watch from Walmart could take the same abuse for the same amount of time and I wouldn't be out $150.Overall: Good watch, I got my money's worth, but I probably won't buy another one.UPDATE 4/15/19Bumping this back up to 5 stars because Suunto Repair Center was a dream to work with! Sent my watch in to see if they would repair my sticky button issue. They did AND they repaired the faulty strap screw. The best part was they told me everything they were planning on doing before they did it AND they did it all free of charge.Great experience with the company 5Excellent WatchI've been wearing this watch for three months now. It works exactly as advertised to this point. I live in Florida and like to keep an eye on the weather when outside. The barometer function mirrors my home weather station closely. For example if the weather station indicates 30.04 the watch will indicate 30.03 to 30.05. The barometer trends the past six hours in two bars of three hours each. This way you can see if the barometric pressure is going up, down, or remaining relatively the same. If the pressure is falling quickly the down arrow will flash to let you know. Taking the watch off and checking the water temp in our pool shows it to be within one or two degrees of my Kestrel 3500 handheld weather station. As far as timekeeping goes it seems to gain about five seconds every two weeks when compared to WWV. The compass must be recalibrated every few times I use it. While it only takes a minute to recalibrate once it's done the compass will be within three or four degrees of a Suunto compass. I do a lot of yard work with the watch on and bang it around pretty good. Plus I go swimming daily in the in-ground pool with the watch on without issue. The band is holding up good as new, the face of the watch has no scratches, and all of the buttons work perfectly. After three months of everyday use I have zero complaints about the watch. Glad I bought it.5I Would Advise Against the All Black Display This watch has so much potential. But unless you are always in a highly lit area the display becomes unusable. Maybe if the numbers were digitally lit and not back lit, I would have been able to make it do. But for that reason only, I have returned this one and have purchased the non black face hoping for better results. Attached are pictures of inside outside and no light using the back light feature on high contrast setting. It is there you just have to zoom in to see it.Update: I exchanged the Sahara Yellow with the Lava Red. Very pleased with this. I can actually function with the non all black format.Pictures Show Inside Outside and Backlight Image. Side by Side comparison 3Amazon Should Make This RightLasted about about four months then the compass ring popped off. Now it's loose and spins free. On top of that, I've never gone below 20 feet underwater and the other day, after dipping my hand in my swimming pool, all of a sudden it has water underneath the screen face. Now none of the buttons work and it won't illuminate anymore. This watch is garbage. Too bad it's past the date that I can return it to Amazon. Now I have to waste my own time tracking down the maker to go through their warranty for either replacement or repair which is almost not worth the time and effort, then having to ship it back. This watch is not waterproof as it is advertised.1The Good the Bad and the UglyI have had this watch for almost a year, and I wanted to give my opinion after my experience with this product...and wanted to give it a real trial before giving a review. This was my first altimeter, barometer, and compass (ABC) watch that I have purchased, and have since tried other models. This watch has been everywhere from snorkeling in the Florida Keys and the Bahamas, multiple swimming pools, hiking, biking, running, North Carolina Mountains, and even through a hurricane, a fire, back of ambulances, worn while working in hospitals and has even been on planes and helicopters. The Good: the watch looks good in all black, the functions are easy to use, the barometer and altimeter were useful, and I really liked the storm alert while spending a lot of time outdoors. The back light stays on while changing functions, or pushing other buttons, which was nice if you are changing things in the dark. The strap is comfortable. I beat the heck out of it and it still works (mostly)The Bad: I read plenty of reviews that mentioned that some of the function buttons stick, or become non-functional. I have encountered this problem too, however lucky for me it was only the start stop button for the stop watch, timer, etc. It is still bothersome though, bc these feature are now useless. I couldn't imagine how frustrating it would be if the mode button (the main button to change things) got stuck. The watch would be useless. The contrast of the display (even after adjusting up to max) makes the time very hard to read in sunlight. The battery life made it about 1 year. The watch is not meant to go very deep (IE don't take it for scuba, even though it might makes it if you read the product insert it advises user to not take it deeper than about 20 ft) . The glass is prone to scratching. The Ugly: The compass is terrible. I would never use this for navigation, other than to get a general idea of direction, and even after re-calibrating multiple times and then verify with a real compass, this thing was worthless. The wrist strap (although comfortable) is prone to breaking and expensive to replace.3Nice ABC watch, but buyer take noticeI chose the Dusk Gray Suunto Core because I didn't want a loud or bright colour that draws attention, but I didn't want the typical cliche tactical black look either. The grey colour scheme is subdued, but classy. It looks really nice in person, but otherwise it functions the same as every other Core. The negative display adds to the overall look and is very legible in outdoor light. Indoors however, legibility does suffer a bit, but you can adjust the contrast on the watch to improve legibility. My advice is to stick with the positive display models of you want an easy to read display indoors and out. The silicone strap is very soft and comfortable, but only time will tell how long it lasts. I also like that the watch uses common CR2032 batteries that the user can easily install without any special tools. I won't comment on what the watch does since there are a host of reviews and demos online, and chances are that if you're reading this review, you already know what the Suunto Core does. Now the bad. The first one I bought had dust particles and some lint under the crystal, so I returned it as defective. This one obviously slipped past Suunto's quality control. Amazon quickly gave me a refund since they fulfilled the order. I ordered a second one which was advertised as new and under warranty by the seller, but the watch I received had clearly been worn and used. It even had some scratches on the caseback and was missing the quick guide manuals. I was not thrilled at all, but at least Amazon customer service came through to make it right. Kudos to Amazon. Still, it's kind of unnerving to think you're going to receive a used item after paying for a new one. My advice to anyone ordering this watch. Inspect it carefully for any visible defects. The watch should come deactivated in a Suunto box with quick start guides and vinyl peel-off protectors on the crystal and caseback. If it doesn't, it was likely bought and returned.3I like SuuntoI like Suunto watches, but they are not for everyone. Some people just don't like the size face, but I like it because I can read it with or without my glasses. This says "Pure White", but the ONLY thing in it that is actually white is the watch band. I did not like the watchband since it seems to bother a nerve on my wrist; replaced the band for a metal one, which has a much better look and feel. The appearance of the watch matches my old Suunto Core, but I do miss the bezel on the old watch that also served to protect the watch face. Battery life would be much improved if it had a larger battery, which I'm surprised it doesn't since it seems to have plenty of room in such a large watch. This could be so much more, which I think Suunto has forgotten since their watches are being made in China, not Finland, where the company originated.4I don't always write 1 star reviews...I don't always write 1 star reviews, but when I do they are deserving. I bought this watch in high hopes that I would like it based on all of the reviews that I read and how much a lot of people raved about it. I bought the Core Ultimate Black and couldn't have been more disappointed with how dim it is. I even went into the watch setup to adjust the contrast, but that actually made things worse in my opinion. The contrast does make things a little brighter, but it also causes you to be able to see more of the digital panel, and it was hard to discern between what was and wasn't illuminated. I can't imagine being on the side of a mountain or a glacier at high noon trying to figure out what the heck my watch says. A simple color inversion could easily resolve this issue and make it a fantastic watch, but Suunto wants you to pay more money for that.Aside from this dim display issue, it seems like an excellent watch. You could always get one of their lighter colored core watches that have a lighter display background, but my preference is to have a black watch. Seeing as the whole point of getting this watch was to use it outside while doing rigorous activities, it is getting 1 star from me. I would NOT recommend the ultimate black to a friend.1Broken and uselessI really gave this watch a fair try. I took it with me, brand new when I started, on a trip through the Americas and it made it 2 months and 15 days approx. before one of the buttons broke after I swam at the beach three times. This should not happen with a 200 dollar watch that one treats well, esp. when it claims to be okay with water. Apparently its not. I don't generally leave 1 star reviews, but seriously, what a piece of crap. My advice, don't buy it.1Great watch with no hourly chime and poor backlight This is a very good watch. It is true that the navigation around the features is good and intuitive. The dial is very easy to read, but the night back light is hard to read especially in times it isn't completely dark. In partial darkness very hard to read. To me showing two times zones at the same time is awesome. I have the white screen crush, but white is only in certain lighting situation. Otherwise is is a light greenish color, but much easier to read than the dark background. No hourly charm! Only one alarm. The watch isn't overly heavy. I use barameter more than altimeter. Barameter is good, I love the alarm in big drop in pressure. Compass is great.I sent mine back in for a casio pro trek solar. Reasons are, no hourly charm, only 1 alarm, poor backlight. 4Looks nice but won't lastNot even two years old and this watch is dead. Took it too the beach and somehow water must have gotten inside, I wasn't really even deep in water and this should be a waterproof watch, but nope, since then the watch just will not work. Tried new batteries, letting it air out, but it's done. Really disappointed, this is second Suunto watch, first watch still works but the band busted on it, and I liked the look of this one better. Will probably switch to Garmin.1Solid ABC Tool WatchFirst things first: this is not a competitor for the more fully-featured GPS watches offered by Suunto or Garmin. This watch is also pretty old-school being about 10 years old so the tech is basic by today s standards. This is an ABC (Altitude, Barometer, Compass) tool watch which is more in-class with, say, a Casio Pro Trek. I bought this primarily as a weekend outdoor watch and as a companion to my Garmin Foretrex when backpacking (which I strap to my pack). I personally chose this combo over a Suunto Ambit3 Peak to avoid battery anxiety and so I had a watch to wear more regularly off the trail, with the Ambit being a fair bit bigger and bulkier. If you do want an all-in-one GPS navigator for the outdoors though, you might consider the Suunto Ambit or Garmin Instinct, or any of their competitors. As a basic, sub-$150 ABC watch, the Core is fantastic. Enough water resistance that you don t need to worry unless you re SCUBA diving, good display, decent backlight, storm alert, altimeter, compass, some basic watch functions (stopwatch, timer, dual time), and it s super comfortable to boot, despite its size. The CR2032 battery should also last about a year and it s user-replaceable. (Top tip: buy these online for cheap). The compass is probably as good as any other electronic compass, including that on my Foretrex which means not great. In a pinch though, it ll probably get you in the general direction you want to go in. It even has a feature to lock onto a heading then give a graphical display of how far to go left or right to maintain, nifty. Or if you have a bezel like mine, can use it as a regular compass. On a side note, I went with the regular black as I ve read a number of reviews saying how difficult the All Black is to read during the day. I can confirm at least that the Regular is easy to read, and still looks fairly cool, outdoorsy cool tho, not tacticool. Personally I would also skip the aluminum cased versions ( Alu ), the extra price really upends the value of this watch; they re the same watch internally for twice the price (or more).I took one star off for the following reasons: buttons are difficult to press. Wish the functionality for the alarm and countdown were upfront instead of in the menu settings. Backlight is nice when it s really dark, but a little hard to see when it s just low light.4
