Excellent for What I NeededI had a boot crash on a laptop due to some type of file that I could not find. I could not even boot in safe mode and there isn't much you can do, or at least what I know you can do when booting to command line input. Using this docking station, I was able to mount the old hard drive to my new laptop that I had bought several months back and copy all my old pictures and videos I had stored on this drive. I wish this docking station had a lead bottom for stability, but it has a swing out piece that helps steady the unit. It included a blue activity light on both sides of the stand. Even though I did not need it, I connected this to a Powered USB hub. The 2.5" drives are pretty cheap now, and this would be good way for extra disk space for files that you don't need all the time from computer to computer. In fact, my Netgear 3400 WI-FI will allow a connection for a centrally accessed drive. This would be great.I've re-formatted the old drive and re-installed the OS and now have passed it down to my granddaughter. 5Excellent Product!I swear this thing worked like a charm. I did have to call Amazon cause it got lost in the mail but once they re-ordered it for me, it was here within a couple of days. I used the dock to basically clone my mid-2009 Macbook pro's HHD to a 2.5 SSD and then replace it inside the computer. It took about 3 hours since I have a lot of audio files but it did a fantastic job. I would recommend this dock to anyone and everyone. Great product at a great price... thank you Amazon! 5External SATA HDD or SSD docking station. This device does work.It also has a double/end USB should you require a power/connection.Otherwise, the single USB connection should suffice.I tried to use this for a disk image recovery back up.It failed to show my already archived back up.And a reboot gave me a Blue Screen.I had to reinstall my OS--using my Win 7 Installation DVD.So, I would suggest use this for archiving files and retrieving file.An application such as Windows[tm] recovery, is risky.I also would not run a program with this device--like editing video files.Just archive and retrieve. 5Minimalist solution to reading notebook hard drives. This think works fine. It will only take 2.5 sata drives. There is nothing to it; just a usb cable and the docking station which is very small, just big enough to house the connector that interfaces with the drive. I don't think a driver was even needed. The drives goes in stiffly and comes out using a bit of force, at least in my case. This might throw you at first because you are reluctant to force the drive in for fear of breakage of the docking station or the drive. It does allow reading and transferring files etc., in an easy and inexpensive manner. 4Good Stuff.Love it. StarTech makes some pretty awesome stuff at great prices. As a IT professional I have purchased a lot of equipment and the StarTech stuff works well. This little device uses a mini USB to standard split USB 2.0 connection. If you have an older PC with USB 1.0 that doesn't supply power you will need both otherwise you can use one of the USB connections. Great fit for SATA 2.5 drives with a slide kickstand on the bottom to keep if from falling over. I use mine to copy hard drives. 5Works As AdvertisedGood things DO come in small packages. The StarTech Hard Drive Docking Station is a perfect example. A tiny, well made docking station for SATA Hard Drives, the StarTech version is quite easy to use. Insert a drive, attach the USB cable and attach to the USB port on your computer. Nothing else to put together, nothing to install, instant gratification. I have to say I was impressed by the operation light included on this dock, a feature not generally found on inexpensive hard drive enclosures and docking solutions. The only negatives I can report are two. While it is working flawlessly under Windows, I am not entirely sure it is functional in Linux. I have one drive with three partitions. Two are NTFS and one is EXT3, a Linux format. Under Linux the two NTFS partitions read perfectly but I cannot recover any information at all under the EXT3 partition. It may be a problem with the distro I was using or it might be something incompatible in the dock. Just noting this so that any Linux users considering the StarTech docking station will be aware. The second negative? Some of the reviews mention that it requires a bit of force to get the drive into the dock. This is true but I consider this a tradeoff that the designers had to make. If the drive were loose in the dock, and the dock fell over during use it could have disastrous consequences for the drive. It DOES take a bit of force, but not enough to actually damage the drive IF you are careful and make sure the dock is securely placed on a table or other flat, immovable surface before inserting the drive.Another note: The cable that comes with the drive is mini-USB to two standard USB connectors for use with any drives that may require more power than a single port can provide and is fairly short (about 2 feet). For most drives, one connection should be enough and ANY mini-USB to USB cable will work. Since this is a standard format cable and just about anything else that connects to a computer comes with one of these, you should have several longer cables in a drawer somewhere gathering dust. I have them from one inch to six feet. I'm using the six foot cable now with no problems.EDIT: After after futzing around with the Linux drive I mentioned earlier, I am happy to report that the StarTech.com docking station DOES work with Linux. The partition had an error. After making that correction the dock worked perfectly. So I wouldn't hesitate to recommend this for Linux applications as well as Windows. 4Works like a charmI bought two different solutions to the same problem - how to read data off of a hard drive that needed to be reloaded. This one works great - very reliable and nothing required - simply drop a 2.5" laptop drive in the bay and hook up the USB connector., and you have an instant external hard drive.Much better than the other solution I tried - a Cables to Go USB-to-SATA adpater. That one required an external power supply, and I'm not sure if it was a loose connector or something with the device itself, but I frequently found myself fiddling with the numerous connection points to get that to work each time. I think next time instead of the adapter, I would buy a 3.5" bay similar to this 2.5" bay. 5Works great for 9.5mm drivesI purchased this docking station for a 2.5" SATA hard drive extract [after it failed to be recognized in its enclosure] to see if I can recover data from it. Unfortunately, the 2.5" drive is a little bit thicker than the standard 9.5mm, clocking in at 12.5mm, so it failed to fit into the slot. I wished I had known or else I would have gotten another dock. This dock works fine with my 9.5mm drives though. 4StarTech Hard Drive Docking StationI was looking for a simple, inexpensive way to get data from a hard drive in a non functioning computer. After a little research, I learned what I needed to do, and this device was perfect. After removing the hard drive from the old laptop, and removing all cases and adapters, I was able to pop it into the dock, plug it into the new laptop via the included USB, and move the desired data. There are many different docks available. Some are very expensive, some are much cheaper. Some fit multiple sizes. This one only fits the 2.5" SATA laptop drive. That is what I needed, and didn't want to pay extra for something I didn't need. It worked perfectly. My wife's photos and music files are now on her new laptop and she is very happy. The hard drive can be left in the dock and used as an external hard drive for extra storage or back up. This device performed as it should, the price was right, and I'm glad I bought it. 5Works wellI had a laptop that was just about dead not doing anything I needed it to but I also needed to rip the stuff off my hard-drive. This thing saved me, my stuff, and money from not having to take it to a shop. I basically opened up my laptop, took out my hard-drive, and dropped it into this docking station. Then, plugged this docking station into my new laptop. From there I was able to get into my hard-drive and copy my stuff. Boom. I was also then able to wipe the drive and reformat it. I was able to fix the old laptop without losing my stuff. 5
