No Luck with Windows 10 Windows 10 users beware, this unit seems to install just fine, but aftet attempting to pair multiple pairs of quality brand name headphones, I am giving up. The headphones work well on other systems. I tried the manufacturer recommended software and drivers, as well as the windows built in ones. No luck. I ended up buying another adapter and it worked right out of the box. Others systems may work with this adapter just fine, but Windows 10 users should think twice about this one IMHO. 1Abysmal range, far from what's advertised. Has an effective range, when streaming music to a speaker or being streamed to, of about 15 feet. After 15-20 feet the music starts skipping and chopping out and eventually the connection is lost altogether.I tried connecting the StarTech to various Bluetooth devices (iPhone, iPad Air, JBL Flip 3) and it couldn't maintain a reliable connection through one wall, or one window (with direct line of sight to the adapter). Even without anything between the adapter and the source, effective range was 15-20 feet.To make sure it wasn't the JBL Flip speaker, I connected the speaker to my iPhone via Bluetooth and had someone go about 45 feet across the street and the music played and never skipped a beat and ahowes no signs of being close to its maximum range.The computer in question was one that I had built for my mother. It runs Windows 7 64 bit, and all drivers and firmware were installed and/or updated for the StarTech Bluetooth adapter.If your goal is to use a Bluetooth mouse/keyboard, this might work (I'm not sure about input lag as I was only testing speakers), but if you are looking to use this to connect a centralized speaker to your computer so you can listen to music in other rooms, be aware that it has a fraction of the effective range that is advertised. 1Vanilla Linux Kernel Class 1 USB Bluetooth Adapter This is a vanilla Linux kernel supported class 1 Bluetooth USB adapter, using the Linux kernel's vanilla btusb.ko module/driver.Install the net-wireless/bluez package according to your Linux distribution's instructions.The following will immediately activate Bluetooth feature and initiate scanning, providing RSSI dBm signal strength of the remote (portable) Bluetooth devices.# modprobe cfg80211 rfkill bluetooth btusb# /etc/init.d/bluetooth start# bluetoothctl[bluetooth]# scan onCan also within another terminal run "btmon" during performing the above steps, for providing more debug information with the portable/remote Bluetooth devices.If you just want to connect to other Bluetooth device, ignoring the above:# /etc/init.d/bluetooth start$ blueman-manager(May require restarting blueman-manager if the USB Bluetooth adapters were not previously powered on. Replaced a Class II device i bought off eBay because it kept dropping to a lower bitrate (read: Spotify starts sounding like an AM radio) when walking a few feet away from the computer.This is relatively better. Walking through rooms/past walls will degrade connection, but it keeps the high bitrate better, so you don't get stuck with lower bitrate AM-radioey sounds.Works out of the box with WIN10 and Bose QC35 4Works on old Mac Pro Works well on my 2012 Mac Pro. No need to install drivers. You have to turn off bluetooth, plug it in, turn bluetooth on and OSX will recognize this adapter.I'm using it with Apple's Magic Mouse, and Trackpad and there's less lag than using the built-in bluetooth device.Also works with my Airpods, however the range is very limited maybe 25 ft. and even the mic works decently. The Airpods were unusable through the built-in bluetooth. 4worked right off the box. item pertrudes out a little i'm a fan of startech items. more expensive but reliable in my opnion. i wanted a no-nonsense bluetooth adapter for my t420 lenovo so i could stream audio into my stereo using a belking bluetooth receiver on its end. the setup was as simple as they come and the adapter worked flawlessly without its included driver under Windows 7 64 pro.pros: worked right off the box without installing any driverscons: item pertrudes a little. in other words the metal end of the usb does not go all the way in. i don't know if this is a design issue on lenovo or startech but i have about a 2mm gap between the adapter head and the usb edge of the laptop.i don't think anyone buys these for aesthetics so i won't make an anti-case for its design. the round head allows for it not to get caught on something when slid in and out of the laptop bag. i keep it plugged at the butt end of the laptop and the laptop goes head in first so the adapter is facing out in the bag.overall very satisfied with the item. i pressume that startech will keep the driver updated so i can repurpose it elsewhere once my lenovo is replaced. 4Works with MacBook Pro For those of you who are wondering about MacBook compatibility, I have a 13" late 2013 MBP running v10.14. For reasons I won't go into, I needed an external Bluetooth dongle. I choose this one and it was truly PnP. Plugged it in while the MBP was on (you do NOT need the disk that comes in the box), then I checked the system report to see that in fact the MAC address did change to this dongle. Then I turned it Bluetooth from the icon at the top of the screen, paired it with my Trackpad and all is well. Also, paired it with my iPhone 6s and iPad mini 4. Works just like the internal BT xmtr. The range is somewhere in excess of 25 feet (I ran out of room to test further). The dongle protrudes 3/8" beyond the edge of the MBP. 5Not A Happy Camper I shopped long and hard to chose the best bluetooth dongle. I read way too many reviews, and finally decided that this one seemed to be what I was seeking. I even spent more than I had planned, with the hope that it would provide better performance. It did take a couple of hours to figure out how to make it get recognized by my computer, and then to make it work, but I finally got it. I had read in many reviews of similar products that this was an issue, so I was not surprised. Don't ask me what exactly I did because I tried so many ways to make it work, that I lost track. It did finally come around, though. The most upsetting fact about it is that it does not even come close to the performance of a Class1 dongle, which is what I REALLY wanted. I can barely reach 25 feet away, which is less that a Class2 claims, and only going through 1 wall, the signal completely falls apart. This is very disappointing. I am operating from the middle of my home, which is a small 3/2, and I cannot even get reception in my living room, which is just down the hall. I would return this item, but afraid I would end up with the same or less performance, and not really sure what to order to replace it. I am not at all pleased with this product and would not recommend it to anyone, as it DOES NOT PERFORM AS ADVERTISED. StarTech.com 50m 160-Feet Class 1 EDR Wireless Mini USB Bluetooth 4.0 Dongle Adapter (USBBT1EDR4) 1Has worse range than my $5 adapter I bought this to replace a very cheap class 2 adapter I've had for years. I normally have the adapter connected to a usb extension to reduce interference, and it worked okay for a long time; it reached out to my front porch with minimal skipping in the audio on my headset.My old adapter suddenly stopped working with my usb extension for some reason and wouldn't reach where I wanted it to when connected right into the PC. I decided to finally buy this newer bluetooth adapter.My main mistake was assuming the price tag would ensure I was getting something worthwhile.It does work fine within 15 ft of my computer, and it connected up great and was recognized on my win7 without any hassle.However as I walk toward my porch, the connection begins to cut out WAY earlier than my old cheap usb adapter. By the time I'm out there it's unlistenable and my headset disconnects completely after struggling for a minute.Worse still, once the headset disconnects or I power it off, getting it to reconnect properly is a pain. I've had to resort to removing the headset 'device' from my computer and reconnecting it every single time I want to use it.DEFINITELY requesting a return on this product. BEWARE the range on this is not what is advertised in the listing, buy one of the $5 adapters instead and you'll have a similar experience. 2Buyer Beware There are scores of these things in the marketplace, each based upon one of a very small handful of virtually indistinguishable Bluetooth chipsets. Most simply implement the chipset manufacturer's reference design. If content with the minimalist Bluetooth protocol stack implemented in your operating system's default driver then be guided by price but these designs do distinguish themselves in the presence of the feature-rich protocol stacks implemented in the proprietary drivers authored by/for the chipset manufacturers. The StarTech USBBT1EDR4 utilizes the CSR (now Qualcomm) 8510A06 chipset for which can be licensed the CSR Harmony protocol stack. That StarTech includes, with each USBBT1EDR4, a DVD containing this software drove my decision to purchase some from them. The discovery -- confirmed by the manufacturer's Technical Support personnel after much wasted time and effort -- that StarTech never paid Qualcomm's licensing fee and that, therefore, their bundled DVDs are without value drove my decision to return them all. Plugging this adapter into a Microsoft Windows (XP, Vista, 7, or later) hosted computer on which has been installed its companion driver will yield: "You don't have a valid license to run CSR Harmony. Please contact your supplier.". Buyer Beware. 1
