Customer Reviews

If you own multiple I/O devices this does the job very nicely. One suggestion for StarTech - give us a ...Needed extra I/O ports to run Ham radio gear, i.e., rig control and TNC's. Gave this a try. Arrived today. Since I am running Windows 10, the instructions were not exact. Had to use the device manager to select the supplied drivers. The key to install process for Win 10 is to reboot the computer after you load those drivers. Otherwise, the serial ports will continue to have the little yellow triangles next to them and be listed as "other devices." Now successfully running Ham Radio Deluxe rig control through the device with room for 3 more devices. The MFJ-1270 is next on the list, with left over slots for older HT programming and GPS throughput. If you own multiple I/O devices this does the job very nicely. One suggestion for StarTech - give us a bit more room between ports for those DB-9 connects. These old fingers don't work like they used to. 5Works Well, Most of the TimeGood solid product but under Win7, it will periodically disconnect and reconnect, using the next group of comm ports. This can get real annoying if you are running apps that are expecting a specific comm port and suddenly it changes. Sometimes you can disconnect it, wait a bit, reconnect it and it will go back to the original/correct comm ports. It that doesn't work, you need a reboot. When not being crazy, it works very well. 4This device works greatMy new PC motherboard (Asus Rampage IV Extreme) no longer has any serial port. However, there are still a few things in the house that require the occasional use of a serial connection. I primarily use it to connect to a Simply Automated UPB PIM (Universal Power-line Bus Plug-in Interface Module) and run the Upstart software to configure the home UPB network. I also use it to program a URC Remote Control. I guess I could have gotten away with a dual port adapter, but the price difference is not that much. My PC runs Windows 7 64-bit. On this OS, I didn't need to install any driver myself. As soon as I plugged in the unit to my PC, Windows automatically searched the Internet, downloaded, and installed the required FTDI driver. Device Management shows the 4 new serial ports. On my machines, they are assigned Ports #6, 7, 8, and 9. They correspond one-to-one to the physical ports on the unit. Unplugging and replugging the unit didn't change the sequence, so this unit must have COM retention capability. All-in-all, I am quite pleased with it. 5Plug and Play!So far, so good.So far, I have three devices (industrial CNC machines) connected to this hub, and it still is only powered through the USB port. This really keeps cabling easier, as far as this hub is concerned.Coming from a single USB port, I am able to provide each port with full-handshaking. My CNC machines are running a variety of baud rates between 2400 and 9600. Two of the three machines are well over 20 years old, so the 2400 should be understandable. The new CNC machine (2010) is currently running 9600. I can probably push it faster, but this requires reconfiguration on the machine and I'll have to test it out at a later time. But as stated above, so far, so good. 4Industrial quality, flawless operation.Tried many cheap USB to RS-232 converters, what a waste of money and time trying to get them to work properly; nothing but communication errors and frustration. This one works flawlessly in Windows 7, 8.1 and 10; drivers installed automatically (no disk needed) and COM ports are persistent (never change) between multiple devices; it looks like the driver always remembers a serial number (or somehow is able to identify a specific unit) of the device and assigns it the same COM port every time this specific device is plugged in. Used 3 of those converters on the same computer without any problems whatsoever. Has an external 5V input port (I think it is a standard 2.5mm plug) but I did not need to use it; it works flawlessly getting it's power only from the USB port. The case is solid steel and comes with a DIN rail adapter as well as it can be surface mounted with screws. Love the send and receive indicator lights (for each port) since I can visually identify what is happening with either serial port. Also has a power LED. I cannot say anything about it's high speed serial performance since my application calls for only 38.4kbs and it has been running without a single error for months now. At this speed, basically saturating both ports with data traffic, it is just slightly above the ambient temperature (cannot really call it warm). As for reliability goes, I have been using approx. 15 of those converters for several months (purchased from different sources including Amazon), not a single DOA or failure. A true industrial quality USB to serial port converter that is very reasonably priced. 5FlakyI bought two of these recently, and they are flaky to say the least.I connect one of the hubs to a PC that runs Windows Server 2012 OS. It automatically installs driver and new COM ports showed up in device manager as expected. I restarted the PC just to be sure, then I start to connect my devices to the hub, and then the unpleasant experience began. The first issue is there is no clear indication how the port on the hub maps to the COM port in device manager. I tried to connect to each port and see if there is any output from Putty serial connection console. None of them showed anything.I replaced the cable, and it didn't solve the problem.I downloaded latest driver from StarTech.com and manually upgraded again (and restarted my PC), and it didn't make any difference.I tried to use other COM ports listed in device manager, then reconnect my device to the ports on the hub one by one, then I found some of the COM port seems to work. However the communication could stop after a while. Or it wouldn't resume after I power cycled my device. At the end I wasted a lot of time and didn't get anything useful out of it. 1Works well on Windows 7I am writing some automated test software for a device that communicates through 4 RS-232 ports. This Star Tech adapter is perfect for my testing. I use it regularly on two 64 bit Windows 7 machines and one Apple Mac running 32 bit Windows 7, on Boot Camp. The only strange behavior, is that, on all 3 machines, the ports did not install in the order they are numbered on the back of the adapter. They are numbered 1,2,3,4 but in my case they installed as 1,2,4,3. So, on the computers, port 3 was mapped to the port labeled as 4 on the device. I spent a few hours one night figuring that one out. You are able to reassign the port numbers and the assignments are retained by the operating system. All in all, this device is well worth the money ;) 4Amazing Adapter EliminatorThis is the greatest! What an amazing device. I have fought with various adapters for years and they are always causing problems, especially when you add a new device. This box works perfectly and replaces all those irritating adapters. I have a weather station, 2 ham radios, and a communications device all plugged in and they can all be used at the same time. No issues with port numbers or anything like that. Plus, eliminating the serial/usb adapters freed up the usb ports on my PC that they were using. In addition, all the serial cables go to this box which can be located out of the way, reducing cable clutter at my PC. This is a terrific adapter hub and I highly recommend it to anyone who uses more than one serial/usb adapter. 5Highly reliable and stable USB to Serial adapter. As an amateur radio operator, this device is a must have for running ham radio software. I have purchased two of these. One for windows 7 and another for windows 10. Both were extremely easy to install on both computers. Window 7 Home premium machine is a Dell Inspiron 1750; the other is a Dell XPS tower running win 10 Pro. These devices use the ultra reliable FTDI chipset and will retain port assignments across reboots. I can confirm these devices will work and work well with "Ham Radio Deluxe" software. 5Wonderful advance over Keyspan for certain applications.Had been using Tripp Lite Keyspan serial to USB adapters in my astronomical observatory. They are good, but not good enough for a few key pieces of imaging equipment. Not the fault of Keyspan. I had one fail, and decided I needed a more dedicated way of adapting serial devices. This worked perfectly! I run it remotely through an Icron USB extender (LAN) several hundred feet to the house. My equipment specifically stated I should use a dedicated "card" but running a laptop made that impossible. So I got this and it solved all my connectivity issues. And I run it with no external power source. 5
