Customer Reviews

A hair Too Wide for StarTech rackMore like 3.5 stars. I wish I paid more attention to the reviews before purchasing this. I specifically bought it because of the high weight rating and the fact that I also just purchased the StarTech 4POSTRACK25U, so I figured they'd work nicely together............... they do not. I was able to read some other helpful reviews to see that you need to mount the ears first and then do some wizardry to jam the shelf in there. Mine is a little crooked and it is driving my OCD crazy, but it will have to do because I have not found a way to successfully make micro adjustments. Hopefully when I get my equipment in there it won't be noticeable. It's a shame, because it is otherwise very nicely and solidly built. I don't think I would purchase this again, and I'm debating returning it. 3Excellent Rack Shelves -- Installation Could Be Easier Using RailsCurrently, I have 3x StarTech 1U Shelves (250lbs - Vented) mounted in my StarTech 25U Open Frame Server Rack. While they are certainly sturdy, and they hold the advertised weight without bending, bowing, or sagging, installation is more difficult than it should be. The shelves use rack ears instead of rails, thus adjusting to fit requires a bit of pre-planning. Additionally, using nuts in place of rails makes adjusting the shelf, once mounted, a major pain as you need to losen or remove them from each ear before those adjustments can be made (making sure you remove whatever the shelf is holding beforehand). As a general recommendation, if you do intend to place full load on the shelf, I would recommend upgrading the nuts to something similarly sized to the holes in the shelf. As noted above, the shelves do hold the advertised weight, though the nuts are pretty small and there's only 6-8 keeping the shelf mounted to the ears. In my case, that means 6-8 nuts holding 250 lbs.If you're new to rack mounted shelves, or you have an enclosed rack, I would highly recommend removing the ears from the shelf and mounting them first. Once mounted, slide the shelf through from front to back. This allows you to easily install the nuts, and if you do have an enclosed rack, it allows you to bring them closer to the middle of the shelf where there's more room for tightening. All things considered, however, these shelves are not really designed to be moved often and my complaints wouldn't stop me from buying another. Despite the rather difficult mounting requirements and a lack of rails, the shelves are solid, fit the bill for my needs, and come highly recommended. 4Good shelf ... if you have at least 28" minimum depthAs there are a few options on the same page, my review is for the StarTech.com 1U Adjustable Vented Server Rack Mount Shelf - 175lbs - 19.5 to 38in Deep Universal Tray.Sounds like it should fit a wall cabinet with 24.5" depth, right? Nope! The solid steel (vented, but single piece of steel) shelf is actually 19" x 27.5" without the brackets installed. The minimum depth required is therefore just under 28" -- no where near the 19.5" minimum depth claimed. If you have a cabinet with at least 28" depth, this seems to be a very well-made shelf that would be easy to install. I'd have no problems using it if that were my case. If you have an open rack that's shorter, you could let nearly 10" of this thing hang out the back, I suppose -- but wow, what a bad description of "adjustable" in my book. 3Happy, but...I own a Startech 25u 4post rack. Ordering this 4post 1u shelf from Startech was a no brainier. Once I got it in the rack it was fine, but getting it in the rack wasn't fun. The shelf is slightly too wide. About a 16th of an inch. I couldn't mount it from the outside. All four posts had to be mounted from the inside. If you've ever had to mount from the inside, you know it's not impossible, but not optimal. Sad that it's made by the same company and doesn't fit properly. I will say that it is very, very sturdy. It's holding all my none rack mount gear. 4Description mis-leading on size, but is sturdyFirst, the shelf is sturdy and strong, as one would expect from a four-post fastening shelf. The vent holes in the bottom ensure that air flow is okay from any bottom-vented equipment. The shelf was easy to adjust and secure. The BAD part is that, though the description implies it will work on nearly all racks, it does not make clear that the shelf will hang out the front or the back on most racks that are not set to full depth! The minimum depth for the rack and having it not stick out past the posts is probably around 30" (just guessing). I was able to allow it to stick out the front of my rack and set a keyboard on it, so all was not lost, but would have had to return it if the keyboard use was not found. 3Exactly what I needed.I looked long and hard for the right shelf at the right cost. I needed something that would support about 60 pounds or so for 2 PCs but didn't cost $$$. This fit the bill perfectly. The only 'drawback; it is flat shelf meaning no lips so things can slide off of your pushing from the front or back if your not paying attention, Since my PCs have 'feet' you can move them around to the point they can tip off the front or back. Not enough to fall off accidentally but with all the other shelves in my rack having lips to limit movement it was something to notice.Install was easy and the rails are easily adjustable for different depth racks.Well packaged and shipped (and delivered) FAST.I would buy this again. 5Great Sturdy ShelfThe 175-pound version of this shelf arrived well packaged in double boxes. The shelf is very sturdy and has flexible mounting options. I was able to install the shelf myself; however, having two people would make the install faster and easier.Detailed specifications for this rack can be found on StarTech s website. 5Very sturdy shelf for your rack.Very heavy duty shelf. Designed to work in most rack units that use standard snap in square peg round hole type mounting. I bought it to work as the top rack in my Startech 25 U expandable rack system. I had attempted to use a pair of cantilever shelves, front and back, but found that even though the shelves were rated at 50 lb, the concentrated weight of my NAS units was too much for the cantilever shelves to handle. My main NAS is a Netgear ReadyNAS 314 with a 4 X 3 GB compliment of WD Red drives, paired to a 4 by external expansion that holds 4 X 2 GB WD Reds, plus a Synology that holds 2 X 2 TB Reds. That many drives has a considerable amount of very focused weight. This shelf holds all that, plus a traditional, and normally floor placed, 1000 Ah AOC uninteruptible supply. I was thinking about replacing that supply with a rack mount unit, but this shelf made that unnecessary. 5Easy to modify for 2-post rackThe product description doesn't make it clear that this shelf is designed for 4-post racks only. You have to download the PDF manual from StarTech's website to confirm this. I ordered this shelf anyway for a 2-post rack, figuring I could modify it easily for a 2-poster.I own a number of other StarTech products (rack hardware, server enclosures, etc.), and I've been very impressed with StarTech's quality. I was equally impressed with the quality of this shelf. It's well-designed, well-built, and very strong. The shelf surface is welded to a "frame" that can hold significant weight. And as I estimated, the shelf was very easy to modify for my 2-post rack. I only had to drill three holes per side -- six total -- to mount the four included rack "ears" to the shelf frame using the included nuts/bolts. (I used existing "slots" for the fourth hole for each side.) It took me a total of 30 minutes to measure, drill, and clean up.Note that the shelf also comes with eight 10-32 rack screws for mounting into a rack. 10-32 threading is the most common for audio/video racks, but 12-24 is the standard for IT and telecom racks. Therefore, I had to supply my own 12-24 rack screws -- not a big deal since most purchasers of this shelf will already have their own rack screws to match their racks. 5Annoying to install or removeI don't know why people are rating these shelves so high. They are easily the most annoying server rack shelves I have ever used. Getting the "adjustable" portion adjusted to the exactly right length is huge pain. Then you have to get it into the rack. If the rack is empty, you can just rotate the shelf sideways and then twist it back into position, but good luck if you need to put one in or take one out of a rack that is already full of equipment. I've seen much better adjustable shelves where the front bracket is permanent and the rear bracket is just a simple bar across the back that the shelf rests on. Once they're in place and never have to be moved again, they're great. 3
