Customer Reviews

This case needs a case (Beware Kuzy as well; see below.)This case experienced fractures in multiple locations, as other posters have shown. The material is extremely brittle. The bottom portion has fractured at the both rear tabs, and in the middle of the sides. The top portion has fractures at all four corners, and in the middle of one of the long sides. This was used by my daughter, and usually just stays in her room, moving from desk to bed.Unfortunately, I broke down and bought a replacement case from Kuzy when this one was four months old. The Kuzy had a rear bottom tab that was broken in half and fell out when I removed the shrink-wrap.Save your money. 1Decade Long Customer of Speck No More Been a customer of Speck since my 1st Powerbook in 2005. Case always lasted life of the product (or longer!). The date of this reviewposting is: 12/27/16No more.Ordered this $30 10/16, it arrived early 11/2016 for immediate install on a adult-owned laptop. No transport, not even within house. No drops, bumps. Never seen inside of a backpack or carry on, never met a TSA agent for a blue-glove date for a HD pat-down. Length of use: 2 months (almost)Pros =True blue/jewel tone blue; it fit machine and looked pretty (for a little while).Cons =Top shell: arrived warped/could not get left rear latch to ever "grab on"/seat fully; 2 months top shell major traveling spiderweb crack from back 2.5 inches long & growing legsBottom Shell: 1.25" straight crack out from heaphone jack port on L side; L rear corner cracked off; R rear footpad fell out repeatedly (superglued it back in to get it to finally stay)Times are hard. So much hard work goes into every dollar. I don't usually write reviews but am doing so to assist others from donating money to a wealthy corporation for producing and marketing a defective product. Am a VERY unhappy customer and inaddition will be spreading the word to the other geeks in the Silicon Valley that Speck is no longer producing a reputable product. After 10 years I am no longer a customer of Speck. 1Corners cracked within one week. Delivered and installed on Monday. Laptop moved from kitchen counter to couch. Today's Friday and the corners have already started cracking like the others have described. Our other MBP has a Speck case for a year+ and no cracks. This is either a bad batch or they've gone downhill in quality. Will contact Amazon to return/exchange and try it again.UPDATE (4 Jan 2016): Received the replacement and equally disappointed. After a week or so of light use, the top began to crack. Comparing it more closely to the older Speck case on our other MBP, it def seems like the materials have changed. Will start looking for that one or another brand. 1Avoid this product.. This case was a Christmas gift (2 weeks ago) for my daughter. She has a slip case for her laptop and when taking it to work she puts the computer into the padded slip case into her back pack. In spite of these precautions, the case has a corner that broke off (exposing the computer). The purpose of the Speck case was to add an additional level of protection to her laptop. Reading through reviews here I am finding that this product has a history of breaking/cracking. I would like to discuss returning it for a reimbursement or replacement but can't find any way of contacting the seller. Avoid this product! 1they might not have always walked away looking pretty, but they did their job **Update**So, I have had my case for about 7 months now, which is good, but it has started to get a little wonky. The bottom clips that keep the bottom half connected are starting to break and that piece seems to be falling off all the time. I know I got a good 7 months out of it, but for $50 I had hoped for better. Looks like I am out to find another.I must say, Speck has probably saved me thousands of dollars over the past several years. Their cases took a beating while on my phones, they might not have always walked away looking pretty, but they did their job. This is why I decided to go with Speck when I got my new 13' MacBook Pro with Retina display. It arrived quickly and for the most part was in good shape. There is one spot that has a little cluster of scratches, but I can't even tell where it is when I put it on my MacBook. I know a lot of people have noted that it is really hard to get on and off, which I haven't found to be true. It fits very well, and when I had to take it off to get a speck of dust under the case it wasn't too bad.I spent weeks searching for the best case and was surprised that not very many cases had protection on the back corners, which this one does. My only concerns is that it will overheat, though, I know that none of the vents are covered up. I just wish they would have put a few vents on the bottom. If I had to change one thing it would be the glossy finish. It is fine and I am sure others like it, I just wished they had the satin finish in clear also. I will update in a bit if anything changes. All in all, a good product. 3Worst Speck Case--Causes MacBook to Overheat I ordered this to replace another speck products case. This is not a matte case and therefore it scratches quickly and visibly as well as shows fingerprints. After only 3-4 weeks of owning it small cracks have appeared all around the edges of the top cover and seem to be growing every time I open and close the lid of the macbook. But, my biggest issue with this cover is not cosmetic--somehow the bottom of the case, covers some sort of vents for the macbook, so it will overheat after being on for a few hours. This constant overheating and not venting properly is likely causing long-term damage to my $2000 macbook. 1Not for the price... I got this about 2 months ago, but within 3 weeks the rear clips that hold the bottom cover to computer broke. So now my computer can literally slide out of the case from behind. As for the actual product:Holding this case you can feel that its pretty slippery, I used to have the older matte version of this case by speck and that one was tough and easy to grip. I had that one since I bought my Macbook Pro in 2015 and lasted me 2 years. This one feels a bit flimsy compared to that one and for 40 dollars I would expect around the same quality. Speck Products SeeThru Satin Case for MacBook Pro Retina 13-Inch, Black (SPK-A2413) Sadly that one is no longer available.Bottom Line:I cant recommend this product for the price. Look else where. 2Buy Used, Save Considerably I bought mine used through the Amazon Warehouse for like ten bucks. It lasted a solid thirteen months and, for the price, I'm very satisfied. There's no reason for the new products to be priced as much as they are, but the warehouse has so many used options for every color that it doesn't really matter. A couple of weeks ago I dropped my laptop. It was a really hard fall. I figured I had to have broken something. But it was fine! Proof of the case's value anyway. But a piece of the case chipped away and ever since then, it's almost like it's been slowly decomposing. I find new little pieces of plastic on the floor every couple of days. I feel like it was fatally wounded in battle. But it died doing its duty to my expensive laptop so its service will forever be appreciated. Anyway, I'm picking up another used case today for twelve bucks and hoping I get another good year out of it. 5You get what you pay for with these cases I purchased a cheap matte black case for my rMBP late 2015 a while ago. Ended up not using it very often cause it killed the design of the laptop and made it look huge and bulky, also came off with relative ease. This speck case looks FANTASTIC. You definitely get what you pay for. Edges are comfortable so you won't be annoyed when you touch your wrist to the case while using the laptop, and the case is pretty thin and crystal clear. Probably won't protector your laptop from any falls, but great for saving it from minor dings and scratches. Ventilation is also solid, won't have a super hot laptop and can still appreciate the design. Spend the money, you won't be disappointed. 5Not worth the money! I had a Kuzy case for my Macbook previously and it did a great job of protecting my laptop but after a little over a year, it began to crack so I decided it was time for a new case. I ordered speck based on the recommendation of family and friends who loved theirs, however after less than a month, it is already cracking on one of the corners and one of the rubber feet has come off. I am highly disappointed in the quality of this case, had I known I would have spent half the money and bought another Kuzy case instead! 1
