Very useful little toolLove this thing. Super useful to have for articulating different parts of your rig. I currently have my Zoom H4N attached to it, and plan on picking up another one for a small LED light. Gives a good range of motion, solidly built. The shoe portion is a little small compared the standard shoe mount, so you might get some slight play in it, but making sure you tighten it easily solves it. 5Can not tighten this on both side of the dog-bone shape. Flops around.I am only trying to keep a Lume Cube stationary so I can use it to illuminate my subjects. Lume Cube is truly about as big and heavy as two ice cubes, but since I can not tighten both ends of this simultaneously, it is pointless. All I can think is that I must have gotten a bad one, otherwise all reviews would be one star. Reached out to the manufacture, but sadly no reply. 1Almost perfect, wish there is a version with both 1/4"-20 UNC having thumb nutsI found this to be almost perfect way, without a larger rig, to join a Blackmagic Design Micro Cinema Camera with the Blackmagic Design Video Assist. Unlike the Articulated Magic Arm, the camera does not drop immediately by a foot once you loosen the locking knob.The only small complaint is that while both side have a 1/4"-20 UNC screw, the screw on the shoe adapter side is shorter, lacks a thumb nut/washer, and therefore cannot stably attach to a camera (since there is no friction, it unscrews easily). It is a pity that SmallRig does not make any version with two proper 1/4"-20 UNC mounts, possibly due to the outsize still camera market vs. cine cameras. So I ended up buying two of these, salvaged one just for its leg, in order to make a "symmetric" 1/4"-20 UNC double ball head. 4A higher height over the axis is actually better but, that makes it unwieldy especially with a ...I use two of these combined to give a little my flash a little more height above the lens axis. My experience is that depending upon the position, you may need a pliers and red Loctite to tighten securely (bottom unit in photo) to hold a on-camera flash. The top unit I can use finger tightening. Of course, the flash and the extra unit may add more weight than a single unit can handle. I suppose that if you used only one unit, tightening by finger securely would not be a problem with the weight of the flash. I wanted this anticipating that I would have more options in positioning versus a solid style articulating arm (which I might try). I like it. 4Not very good...Got this thing for about $10 and it's not very good. When you tighten everything down it feels solid until you knock it or try to move it slightly, it unscrews itself from the base and doesn't stay in place. I have a 7" very light monitor attached to the top and the arm is attached to a cage, this thing can't be touched or the bottom ballhead will unscrew itself. It needs to be glued or something so the ballhead doesn't move. I would say look for another ballhead arm. 2Need to mount a mic on your camera? This is up to the task...This little gem replaced about a dozen of the crappy little shoe mounts that don't hold even a feather well... I got this to mount a shotgun mic with a windscreen on my camera rig and make it easy to take on and off. It holds securely and keeps a pretty substantial mic and cables all pointing where it should. In other words, it works. Should have bought it years ago.... 5Just okay for my use.This product didn't work well for me. The unit I was supporting must've been too heavy. The dog bone part held up well, but the ends and locknuts (threaded rods also) were not as strong as I needed and the threads wouldn't tighten up and hold as I liked. Might work well for something rather light as it saves space and is a neat idea. I would be cautious of recommending, depending on the use. 2I think this is among the best of these type of gizmos out thereI think this is among the best of these type of gizmos out there. A couple important things separate it from the rest of the pack, and both of them are quite crucial. First off is the ability to really tighten the ball head so it won't move around. This is the most important thing for these little shoe mounts. I have a couple others that I have purchased alone or that have come as a part of another product (LED lights), and they always suffer from the super-slide-syndrome: the first time you make the slightest movement, they slide into some undesirable position. The problem is that you simply can't get them tight enough, despite your best efforts. This one is a true clamp and really grips the ball head from both sides, and the tightening mechanism is actually allows you to get it as firm as it needs to be to stop all unwanted motion.The other factor that makes this better than others is the fact that it actually has 2 ball heads. Almost seems unnecessary, but this really can come in handy when it seems you just can't get whatever is attached to it in the right position. I can hold my lights (which is usually what I have attached) in one hand, float them into whatever position they need to be, then tighten this up with the other hand, and I am good to go.It really is a solid little unit and can hold a decent amount of weight - nothing CRAZY, but you'd be surprised at how quickly inferior products buckle over with something that really doesn't weigh that much at all. That hasn't happen with this in my experience. I always regret it when I don't have one of these with me - it has definitely been worth the price. 5Sturdy, durable, and easy to use.I use two of these mounted one on top of the other to position my flash for macro photography. They allow for very flexible positioning and even stacked as I have them they keep my flash in place even when the camera is moved from a landscape to a portrait orientation. Unlike other ballheads I have tried, these seem to be wearing well; I think largely due to the design that clamps down on almost the entirety of the ball instead of having screws dig into the balls. They're easy to reposition on the fly even when working in the field. I've been using mine for several months now and haven't had any problems. It's easy to find adapters that allow you to change the 1/4" screw top to a hotshoe mount which give you more flexibility in mounting. 5Nice Design - Seems Very StableThe lock-down function on this product seems light-years ahead of similar items. We've fought with the cheap ones for years, as they tend to loosen up and flop around much too easily. That's a hassle when you're using camera-mounted field monitors, wireless mic receivers, etc. I think it's because those cheapies use a lock-screw right on the ball, rather than clamping the ball between the two halves of the case, as this one does. Our first big test is a shoot this weekend ,but I suspect this'll come through with flying colors. 5
