Customer Reviews

Nice to have but sometimes awkward to useI have found this set of thread checkers to be very useful in the course of performing mechanical repairs on my "fleet" of older vehicles. Using them on loose nuts and bolts is no problem but, as other reviewers have noted, the inability to remove the individual thread checkers from the length of stiff steel wire on which they are retained makes them difficult--and sometimes downright impossible--to use on bolts that are in place on a vehicle. If it were possible to temporarily remove them from the retainer for use in hard-to-reach spots my rating would definitely be five stars instead of just four.4Meh, it's ok. Very incomplete for the price.Useful, to a point. Doesn't include some odd, but common threads found in plumbing, air and gas connections. So if you are a scattershot tech like me, you'll need to add some couplers to this kit. If you are working on brake lines, fuel lines or air lines that mate SAE with metric, British Pipe and NPT, you will be needing a different set. Also, if you are reaching in a tight spot, this is impossible to test a thread unless you disassemble the wire rope.3Just what I needed I went back and forth with buying this or the one on a rigid board. I decided on this one because of it's portability. I have used it on many nuts and bolts and it works like a charm. It is very useful mainly for the tread count/pattern.I often need just one or two more of something and now I know exactly what to buy. It isn't always possible for me to take the nut or bolt to the store with me with the things that I work on. The quality is top notch. I am very happy with this purchase. 5Excellent item for the mechanic. Love it now I am organized life is much easier in Garage.I am so glad I bought this Thread Checker, it covered 95% of the nuts and bolts in my 5 gallon bucket and now they are all organized in bins, no longer dumping the bucket out and spending valuable time looking for a nut or bolt. It was huge relief when I got done sorting them I only one bin of odd ball bolts and one bin of odd ball nuts that I could not determine the size.5Arrived with a problem but manufacturer fixed it!We have these at work and they are great for quickly checking nuts and bolts to see if they're Inch or Metric and verifying the size and thread pitch. I decided I'd like to have one at home after having a small bolt that I needed to order a nyloc nut for. I knew it was metric but wasn't sure about size and threat pitch. When this item arrived I found that it had two of the 5mm-0.8 gauges on it, rather than having the 4mm-0.7 gauge. Rather than immediately send it back to Amazon for a replacement I found the manufacturers website and sent them an email about it with a pic of the error. I figure that the only way to fix quality control problems is if you know about them. On the next business day they wrote back and volunteered to send me a replacement thread checker, which arrived today. I couldn't be happier with the product and customer service.5No more guessing at thread sizes I got tired of having to pull nut and bolts out of my storage cabinet to try to match them to missing or damaged nuts and bolts from items I was repairing. Now I can quickly figure out what size of replacement nut or bolt I need. The engraving on the metric gauges wasn't too hard to read because the gauges had black oxide coating filled with white paint. The markings on the imperial sizes were al little harder to read because these gauges are nickel or chrome plated, with red paint on the engraving. I ended up putting Brother P-touch labels on all of the gauges, but I'll admit my 66-yearl old eyes need all the help they can get. Still a great value for the money and a great convenience. One of my friends saw it and is already ordering one for himself. 5Check all the threadsOverall, I thought this was expensive for what it is. But they are useful so I have it a chance. I didn't think to examine every thread but I probably should have.i went to use it for a sae thread bolt and found the the 1/4-28 was malformed. It looks like it is galled with malformed threads. It's not stripped or cross threaded just malformed. I tried to show this as best I could in the picture. If you buy this, check all of the threads.1A thread (sizer) above the rest.I've had many situations where I had to replace a screw or a nut and didn't know what size to get. until I found this on Amazon I had one of those 1/8" metal cards with a number of threaded screw holes and used that to determine the screw I needed. That did not however help on finding the correct nut. The problem with the card was that it was only 1/8" thick ind therefore contained 1-2 thread rotations in many cases. When sizes are close that is insufficient. This item has thread depths of about 1/2" and gives a much better and quicker sizing. As It alos contains the threaded male as well, it is also great for determining nut size.5Good idea, pretty well executed. Price is high, but saves me time. This is a Good idea, and one I was planning to make for myself, by buying a single screw & bolt of every size, then adhering them to a board, so I could test at will, like in the hardware stores. That idea would work, but if you have a hole, & can't pick it up to screw it into the threads on your board, you're stuck. This is the same idea, but easier to take to the hole, rather than taking the whole piece to the board.Pros:* The Price is high (but the cheapest option I found for a similar item).* This saves me time - Lots of time! Instead of screwing endless unknown screws into unknown holes, I'm usually ID-ing the correct size hole within seconds. Then I can use the opposite end to find the right screw after just a few tries.* At the very least, I know if it's metric or SAE, so if I can't find a screw in my pile, I can buy the correct size immediately, and confidently.Cons:* The sizes are marked on each one, but barely. It's a white stamp, not embossed, so it will wear away soon, I'm sure.* These are incomplete, ie, not every size is on here, but the most common ones are. I haven't had an issue yet, but we'll see over time. If I do, I can just go buy a nut & bolt of that missing size, to compliment my current array for a lot less than buying the bigger, more complete options of this set.* The wire these are attached to is sturdy, & I needed some Bolt cutters to get it off. As others have mentioned, bringing a screw/bolt to the sample holes is super easy, & not an issue at all. But if you need to screw one of the screw ends into an unknown hole, this is not going to let you get more than about a half turn before you find yourself doing some crazy maneuvers to try to get that whole line to twist around repeatedly. Not convenient.Solution:* I cut mine off, & restrung them onto 4 much smaller lines: 1 small sized Line for SAE, & 1 small sized Line for Metric. Then I did the same for the 2 big ended lines. MUCH more convenient, & it's pretty unlikely you're going to grab the wrong line very often. (The jump in sizes is pretty obvious at about half way, on each type, so you're gonna see it with the naked eye).* I also used a much more flexible line, & with so few excess bits per line, it's wildly easier to screw into an unidentified hole, without the hassle. I can always restring them later, if the weaker line breaks. I did use the spacers for thread protection, & then placed all 4 of them in separate baggies, for further protection, since I primarily use the smaller ended parts.Overall, this is a good solution, with some issues. The price was enough lower than other options, that it makes the adjustments worth it to me, and the Time Savings is well worth the money spent, if you find yourself guessing on screw sizes very often - as I do.4Putting an unknown screw in the checker's female threads is easy enough once you grab the right bitWhile the wire rope lanyard does keep all of the pieces together, the lanyard ends up being a liability. I hang it up near my parts bins, grabbing the free end when I want to use it. The pieces slide down the wire, as if they're running away from me. Putting an unknown screw in the checker's female threads is easy enough once you grab the right bit. But trying to put the checker's male threads into a fixed base is nearly impossible as you must spin the whole lanyard around. Eventually I'll probably take all of the bits off the lanyard. The color coding (black finish is metric, chromed finish is SAE) is a nice touch.3Boy, I wanted to love this set, unfortunately what you can not read you don't needThis is an amazing idea. Super useful in this day of standard vs metric and everything in between. Unfortunately the markings on the product were not consistent. Some were clear and easy to read while others were faded out and very difficult to read. Makes me wonder if after some use all the sizing tools will be unreadable.Great idea, just missed the mark.If you can't read it, you don't need it.May try another brand.SAD because the idea is steller. love the steel cable that keeps them all in order... SO SAD!!!3Mixed bag set of most common sizes that includes numbered as well as inch and metricStill a bit pricey for what you get given missing sizes and lack of both coarse and fine metric and numbered in all sizes. Surprised Amazon does not carry a more complete set at a much lower price from China. Presentation on cable more suited for hanging from a pegboard than storing in a tool box.
