Misleading Package & Description - uses Batteries only! This was part of our second Mighty Mule gate system, first one died after only 14 months - just past the warranty. This is NOT the original keypads Mighty Mule used to sell - be advised this one ONLY works with Batteries! Yes, it works wireless or wired - but NOT powered by wire or electricity. My husband went to install these to replace our previous system and kept having problems. I called Mighty Mule as he was installing and the sales rep kept telling us he was doing it wrong (I doubt it). Finally she got a technician on the line and he gave us the update - new model, not wired by power only batteries. So, if you buy this make sure you are willing to install new batteries every month (it does use a lot of batteries and hopefully before the batteries are drained) or keeping looking for the older model keypad. Btw, the battery compartment must be accessed with a screwdriver, so if you have a long driveway like we do, take one with you when you go to change out the new batteries. 2The instructions are really easy and clearI bought this keypad to replace a much older keypad from the same make (its keys would stick and it would not accept new codes - it is normal for stuff to break down with age...)The first part of the installation is to teach the keypad the transmitter code. Well it did not work. That is at the last step, you have to place the transmitter in the right position and press its button. And wait until the three beeps. But no three beeps. Perhaps I did not wait enough? After 1 minute still no 3 beeps. Perhaps change a little the position? I tried 3-4 times and still nothing. The instructions are really easy and clear, so I was sure I was following the right procedure. I started thinking there was a compatibility issue, after all my unit was quite old. And this unit does not have a clear list of models it support and those it does not. Being the weekend I could not call the company.Next day I visited the reviews here on Amazon and read of other people having similar problems. Following a suggestion, I took the unit outside, to avoid possible interferences - nothing. I dismantled it to see if by any chance there were some DIP switches I could program manually - no such luck. I even started dismantling the old unit to see if there were wires coming inside the post which I could use for wired installation. Yes, but too short - the project started escalating.Out of frustration I tried again with the transmitter. And after awhile when the keypad did not beep with the transmitter in the correct position I turned the transmitter 45 degrees and BINGO the 3 beeps. I really don't now if it was the weird angle or just luck. Or if the keypad was not even supposed to work with my unit and perhaps it will stop doing so tomorrow. What I know is that this was a very difficult installation. But if it happens to you too, before returning the unit or junking it, try all kinds of different angles etc. Perhaps it is going to help... 3It works!Pleasantly pleased with this. Was a little intimidated when I opened up the instructions and feared I may need to take a couple of calculus classes before I could program it but a couple glasses of bourbon later, I was reading it just fine. Maybe I should have had more bourbon when I was in college? Anyway, it has everything you need except batteries (I think) and it was quick to install. I would have preferred a little more tactile feeling behind the pushing of the buttons; they feel like poking jell-o. Otherwise, no complaints! 5Would not work wirelesslyI read the reviews before buying, many of them said that it would not work wirelessly. They are right! After many attempts I just wired it, the instructions said to remove the batteries when using it wired. I had to have the batteries installed for it to work. This was installed on my mighty mule E8 opener. There are a couple features I don t like, you can enter up to 20 numbers before it will stop accepting numbers and lock out the keypad (for 40 seconds) so someone could just enter numbers until they guessed the 4 correct ones. The keypad stays active for 40 seconds after entering the correct combo. I probably would buy again it I had to , but would try to find a better one if I could, mostly because it would not work wirelessy 3Programmed w/Help of Customer ServiceI recently bought a number of Mighty Mule products: Light Duty Gate Opener MM260, 10w Solar Panel kit, Electronic Gate Lock, Pin Lock, about 5 extra transmitters, and 2 of these Keypads. The gate was installed and has been working great for about a month. But when I tried to program my keypads I ran into trouble. I followed the instructions and successfully "Learned" my transmitter, then successfully changed my master code. The problem was, they did NOT operate my gate. That was a head scratcher. I went through the steps several times, satisfied that I did not make a mistake, so called Customer Service. I got the MOST HELPFUL and friendly customer service rep, Julian! It turns out the problem was that I used one of my OEM transmitters to pair the keypads, and not the one that said Mighty Mule on the case, and was included with my gate opener. The others looked identical to the MM transmitter except for not having their logo on the case. Once I went through the process using the original MM transmitter, they worked just fine. Julian went through the process of programming both keypads with me on the phone, including changing the master code, adding an entry code, and testing both units every step of the way. Thank you so much Julian, you were very professional and easy to work with.IMPORTANT! Always use your original Mighty Mule transmitter when programming your keypads! 5Tech support terrible long wait times - would not learn remote frequency - 318mhz onlyDescription is misleading. Called 1-800 number, phone prompts do not allow you to connect directly with Mighty Mule department tech's. Stuck on hold 30 minute only to be redirected to Mighty Mule department waiting another 20 minutes.Look on your remote control, somewhere it will say 300mhz or 318mhz for example. This keypad will only work on 318mhz.A private person posted a great Youtube step by step programming "Ep. 41 - Programming the Mighty Mule Remote Keypad"Not sure why the company doesn't offer this or telephone prompts to Mighty Mule directly. Guess they don't care about customers time waiting on hod for an hour.Frustrated, returning - keypad would not learn 318mhz frequency nor did I want to wait over an hour to finally talk to someone who cared, I hung up. Customer service says a lot about a company, "Mighty Mule" CEO should be fired 1Mighty FRUSTRATINGI bought two of these to replace two older Mighty Mule keypads I installed at our ranch three years ago. The old units worked great but after three years, both were weathered and had UV deterioration so I decided to be proactive and replace them before something went wrong.I also bought two new remote gate openers to install in our vehicles. I set the dip switches in the remotes to the same settings we have in our old remotes (they too are still working great) but...These new digital keypads WILL NOT program and open our gates. We followed the instructions sent in the package and that did't work. I even downloaded the instructions to ensure that we had the right ones, and after numerous attempts to program these two new wireless keypads over the course of several days, NO LUCK. I think our old ones were made in the USA and the new ones are now made in China.Calling the toll-free number only resulted in hearing a ring tone then voice mail and then waiting - waiting - waiting and we gave up being on hold. One reviewer stated they only work with batteries (double AA) but they do have the provision to be hard-wired. Speaking of "hard" it's hard (or as many reviewers state here) impossible to get these to work in a wireless configuration as stated here on the seller's listing. 1Does not work with FM145 Gate Lock, need F310.For what it's worth, this keypad DOES NOT work with Mighty Mule Bulldog Pedestrian Gate Lock (FM145). Even though Amazon says these items are "frequently purchased together", this is not compatible with that system. I called Mighty Mule (GTO) and confirmed with them that if you would like to add a keypad to that system you need the GTO Mighty Mule F310. The contact closures on this compared to the one that comes with the FM145 are totally different. Don't make the same mistake I did...if you have or are purchasing the FM145, get the F310 to add on to it. 3I am a little disappointed in this keypadI am a little disappointed in this keypad. When I put in my gate I had originally wired to install the keypad as a wired unit thinking it would be secure and would keep me from having to use batteries in the keypad. Now that I have it I realize I was wrong. The keypad still runs off its batteries even when direct wired to the gate controller that has its own batteries and solar charger. From a security standpoint I am only using it in wireless mode now. I had hoped the pad would send some type of secure-ish signal to the opener but it is actually just a dry contact switch like what you would have on an inside garage door opener. I realize it's just a drive way gate and we aren't talking Fort Knox type security but some type of proprietary signal between the keypad and the controller would be nice. Anybody with a pocketknife could open the gate if they had knowledge of how it works when wired. 2Great productI replaced the battery only model as the batteries always died without notice and when I needed to open the gate to get into they yard it failed to work. I wired this one to the gate battery so it always works and I don't need to change batteries anymore. Works great and i highly recommend it over the battery only model. 5
