Do not order a USED oneThe one I received already had a code set so that the initial codes 0000 and 1234 did not work. I tried several other simple ones to no avail. Returns processed smoothly. Ordered a new one which came next day and works great. My laptop is now secured to my desk and when working in a coffee shop or restaurant I will be able to go to the bathroom without packing it all up and taking it with me. But WARNING, do NOT order a used or refurbished one. It is likely set to a new code and you will just have to return it. 1Thief thwarted We have had multiple break ins at my business. The last time I was so tired of how quickly they stole our iMacs, we installed these. Honestly, I thought they would only slow the thief down a few seconds. To my surprise, they worked flawlessly. Completely stopped the thief in his tracks. We looped it through the desk. The video of him dragging the desk is attached. He realized quickly it wasn't going to work and abandoned his attempt. 5Wrong initial codeThe initial code was wrong. The documentation said that the initial code was set to 1234, but that was wrong which meant that I couldn't use the lock or change the combination. I guessed that the initial setting was 0000 and that worked. With that in mind, seems to work pretty well. 4So worth itAlready saved my MacBook once (after my first one was stolen too). I wish there was more warning about kids running through caf s and snatch and grabbing laptops. Luckily these + that switchblade adaptor for Mac meant the would-be thief grabbed it, continued running (blink of an eye fast btw), but the laptop dropped as this leash pulled taught. Luckily don t think anything jostled loose, yet... 5It failed to unlock, leaving me strandedAfter 6-7 months of normal office-desk use, one day it got stuck in the position where the lock was in unlocked state but could not be pulled out. I tried wiggling, resetting, added a little prayer, too - nothing helped. I talked to the support over online chat, and they were happy to send a replacement - however, I had to first find a wire-cutter to cut the cable, then a hacksaw to cut the lock off, so that I can finally liberate my laptop. Now, all that is not an unbearable inconvenience when I'm in an office/home environment, but it crossed my mind getting stuck at an airport or at some Starbucks out there (I bought a backpack with Kensington lock, too). The support was literally fleeing when I kept asking about whether this was a known issue, etc. I thought these things were bulletproof and super reliable, but now I am skeptical about using them. My concern, again, isn't the lousy 20 bucks, but rather getring stranded somewhere without the tools to "steal" my own laptop or without looking like a thief trying to convince some bypasser to help me "steal" my own laptop (yeah, right), or flat moron, for thag matter. I hope they see this and continue working on improving this product, cause it's obviously not complete. And, no, nobody was fiddling with the lock, to say it broke as a result - it was used normally and once or twice per day the most. 3I like it save for one complaint.I ordered the Kensington Combination Cable Lock K64673AM for the 13" Mac Book Pro 2011. I read the reviews from buyers who unfortunately could not use the lock for their laptop. Mac users should know this does fit a Mac Book Pro. The slot is on the right hand side.I am satisfied with the quality and durability of the cable and lock. Other reviewers noted the lack of clear directions on setting the lock. I agree: Play with the combinations before committing to setting it.My one complaint: The button has to be pushed in to open and insert the pin into the laptop. The combination side is 90 degrees to that side. When the pin is correctly inserted, the combination side is not vertical, it's facing you. So you have to lift the laptop to use your combination. Or else memorize the numbers from the top. 4simple solution for smash and grab scenariosI am using this lock with a GunBox to keep it from walking away in the case of a break-in. It's tied to a bed frame as an anchor point. I am sure a thief with bolt cutters will have no problem cutting through this cable, but this will definitely prevent a smash and grab scenario where they may be unprepared to cut through a cable.I have also used this lock with a laptop and it will definitely prevent it from walking away if you step aside for a moment if tied to a proper anchor that the cable cannot be slipped out of or lifted out of. This type of lock is great for securing monitors and desktop computers as well, or terminals that have a Kensington style reinforced slot. 5Didn't Work Lousy Instructions & Lock Would NOT Even Stay IN the Kensington Slot, Let Alone LOCK!I got this Kensington Combination Cable Lock for Laptops & Other Devices to protect my MacBook Pro laptop when I'm using it at coffee-shops, the library, diners or wherever else. Because, even though I m mostly homebound on permanent disability (thanks vaccine injury/Big pHARMa! ) and am unable to drive due to those disabilities, and public transit in/around this area is minimal to non-existent..............on occasion, I AM able to arrange transportation (usually after a LOT of hassles & rigmarole!), and go out to do some errands or even just to get out of the house and have some fresh air/change of scenery. Unfortunately, because the transportation services are very insufficient, they often (hell, who am I kidding? Actually, its ALWAYS!) have too many ride requests and not enough vehicles/drivers, which usually means having to spend hours (or even ALL day or longer like 10-12+ hours) just waiting around public places in between ride drop-offs & pickups, and having to carry everything I might possibly need or want during that entire day, including my MacBook Pro laptop. Now I know that there are people who'd say that I could just use ride-sharing services like ber or Lyft, but as a single female, with disabilities, I don't feel comfortable using those services when I'm riding all alone. If I was with other people I knew, in a group, that'd be one thing. But if I'm by myself, I don't/wouldn't feel safe taking ber or Lyft driven by any random Joe Schmo who I don't know, and who, for all I know, could be a rapist or serial killer. Because, as far as I know, ber & Lyft drivers are NOT bonded NOR undergo a background check like taxicab drivers usually are and speaking of taxicabs, at $2 for pickup, and $2.50 per mile with an at least $25 minimum, using taxis regularly is not an option/alternative either. As such, I often have to spend hours (not always consecutively, but it often is) waiting for rides and since just standing or walking around all of that time, is hard on my knees & other parts of the body, whenever possible, I try to spend those hours in sitting in coffee-shops or diners/caf s working on my computer instead. However the problem is that, with having to wait hours (sometimes even ALL DAY!) in between ride drop-offs & pickups, I DO need to use the restroom in the interim and after having unpacked & set up my laptop, plugging it in (if there is an electrical outlet nearby) to conserve the battery, and connecting it to the public Wi-Fi hotspot (if there is one!) to conserve my data, and all that...............its just such a hassle to have to then disconnect everything, and shut it all down & pack everything back up in my backpack, to take with me, everytime I have to use the restroom.Yet by the same token, with all the risk of theft, especially of Apple/Mac products, there is no way I'm going to take the chance of the MacBook Pro that I waited (and dreamed) for YEARS to get being stolen. So I would just go through the hassle of unpacking and repacking my laptop in my backpack several times a day on the rare occasions I went out, and I never really bothered about getting a laptop lock until a few days ago, when I was sitting on my front porch working on my computer in the sunshine of a beautiful spring day. I had been working outside for about a hour or so when I realized that I needed to go inside the house to use the restroom, and while I didn't want to leave my laptop on my front porch unattended & unprotected for several minutes, I was also loathe to pack everything back up and then have to unpack it all, all over again after I came back outside, when I would only be gone for a few minutes. Which is why I decided to start looking for a lock for my MacBook Pro.After looking through the listings on Amazon (though in retrospect, I should have looked elsewhere on the Internet as well, even if it meant not having free Prime 1 day or 2 day shipping) I decided to get this Kensington Combination Cable Lock for Laptops & Other Devices because this lock had among the higher/highest ratings and Kensington seems to be a very well-known and reputable name for products like these. Indeed, the majority of laptops have a security slot which is actually called a Kensington security slot !So I thought that getting a Kensington laptop lock would be the best choice, and that it would live up to its name & reputation far better than any random generic brand laptop lock .but I was WRONG!THIS laptop lock DOESN T EVEN WORK!The instructions are LOUSY, with just confusing pictures (no words AT ALL!) to show how to set it up and though I tried to follow the diagrams as best I could, the Kensington Combination Cable Lock would NOT stay in the laptop s security slot, let alone actually LOCK in place! I tried several times to get it to work before giving up and filing for a return. At first, I thought I just got a defective lock, but then, when I ordered the keyed version of this Kensington lock, the Kensington Cable Lock, and that had the SAME kinds of problems (lousy, picture-only instructions, not fitting/staying in the lock slot or locking, etc.) I realized the problem is the Kensington locks, and filed for a return for both of them, and I ordered a Sendt Black Notebook/Laptop Combination Lock Security Cable which was SO MUCH EASIER to set up. With the CLEAR, STEP-BY-STEP WORDED instructions WITH pictures to SUPPLEMENT it, I was able to set the combination and install the lock in under 5 minutes and at least a couple of those minutes were going to get a flat-head screwdriver that fit the small(er) screw. Compared to EITHER of the Kensington locks, (I ve included pictures of BOTH the Kensington lock instructions and the Sendt lock instructions [the Kensington instructions are the 1st picture & the Sendt instructions are in the 2nd picture] so you can see for yourself the difference between the two!) this Sendt Black Notebook/Laptop Combination Lock was a BREEZE to set up, and not only that but so far its working out GREAT! That being said, after reading how easy many/most laptop locks are easy to pick & defeat, I'm still NOT going to rely on a simple lock to protect my MacBook Pro in public. Instead, I will use the lock to secure my laptop to an immovable object in public WHILE I'M THERE too, so that it cannot be stolen right out of my hands (like I read about happening to at least a few people at Starbucks & other public places) and until/unless I can find a laptop lock that can NOT be picked/hacked/defeated in just minutes, I will continue to take my laptop everywhere I go, when I m in public, even when I m just going to the restroom. But since that there's likely, far less chance of theft from my front porch, in just the few minutes that I go inside to use the restroom, or refill my water bottle or get something to eat, I ve been using Sendt Black Notebook/Laptop Combination Lock Security Cable to secure my MacBook Pro to a pillar/post on my front porch or other immovable objects when I'm outside. That way, I don't have to disconnect everything to bring my laptop back into the house everytime I come into the house for just a few minutes. But this Kensington Combination Cable Lock for Laptops & Other Devices was a TOTAL disappointment and after all the difficulty trying (and failing) to even be able to just set it up, there is no way that I d trust the security of my laptop to this product! Very disappointed! 1 STAR!!!!! 1Daily unlocking would be inconvenientIn most cases laptop computers are stolen when they are easy to grab. This obvious cable lock will send the average thief looking for something easier to grab and run with. Any thief who is determined to steal your laptop could bring a pair of bolt cutters. Resetting the combination was easy enough. The lock works fine. There is one problem with the design of this lock. The cable rotates but the lock does not. This means the window for the combination only points directly to the front or back at table level. Any adjacent computer cables have to be unplugged and the laptop has to be picked up in order to see the numbers. If I turn the combination to face front, the button to release the lock ends up on the bottom. This cable lock would be much easier to use if the combination and release button could rotate with the cable. If you set it and rarely take your laptop home, it works fine. Daily unlocking seems inconvenient to the point I would soon stop using the lock. 4Peace of mindThis is just what i needed, it gives me the peace of mind i needed when I work or go to the cafe that nobody is going to steal my macbook pro 13' NOT retina display, 5
