Customer Reviews

don't buyi bought this for the ide connection. the first two sets of pins line up with the holes, and starting with the third set the holes and pins don't match... in short, the quality control department is failing... 1Pretty dang useful! My findings about this thing:1. It will power small laptop HDD's (or anything that will hook up to the small IDE side)2. You need a spare SATA cable for any SATA drives you may want to hook up3. No more than 1 device at a time (or you will have problems)4. Power the drive you're working with BEFORE plugging into a computer (plugging it in before powering on will not allow the device to register)5. It should register as a mass storage device if you're using a HDD, and an ATAPI-Compliant drive if you're working with a CD-ROM drive.6. The thing is flimsy in build quality, if you're not careful with it when plugging in and out, you will break it.7. I noticed that the device may heat up during big file transfers, so do not use it in confined areas and make sure you have lots of space and ventilation around your workstation before using (and maybe a fire extinguisher for extra precaution).8. (for USB 3.0 users) just a reminder, this is a USB 2.0 device, so it will run at USB 2.0 speeds.Well, that's my review. I hope it's helpful!*BY THE WAY: my adapter came in a small bubble-wrapped envolope. I only got what was in the picture. No box, power adapter, driver disc, nothing. That being said, the adapter would probably work differently for you than it would for me. Just quality control stuff I guess.* 5No power supply included, so it didn't fry my hard drive, because the power supplies are shorting out everywhereOne star is because the webpage says, "AC-DC Power Supply (100-250V 50-60 Hz) 12V & 5 VDC for 3.5 & 5.25 devices" indicating that the power supply is included... but it's not.The second star is because, ironically, this debacle may have saved me a blown up hard drive because all of the power supplies for these adapters seem to be shorting out and destroying hard drives everywhere, regardless of brand or dealer for the adapter. So it turns out that this retailer, HMK, doesn't even have the power supply that is represented as being included on that Amazon.com webpage... so I waited 10 days to get this thing shipped from Las Vegas to Northern California (delivered by slow moving desert Mercats and mountain squirrels, I guess) only to be unable to use it with a SATA hard drive because there is no power supply. Now, that being said, this is probably why HMK stopped including the power supply, since others say they received the power supply when they bought this... the power supplies that come with all of these cheap "IDE + SATA to USB Adapters" are apparently defective, and they short out, spark and sometimes fry the attached hard drive.I've read the same sort of reviews on a lot of the product pages on Amazon.com for these adapters now, and it seems most people that used the power adapters witnessed the power supply sparking, smoking and then finding that their attached hard drives have been fried along with the power supply, and probably the adapter itself too. It seems those people who were not using or needing the power supply, like those who were plugging in IDE hard drives to the connectors on the sides of the adapter where a power supply isn't needed because the drive gets power from the USB connection, had no problems at all.So maybe HMK and Amazon.com could change their webpage and remove the claim that the power supply is included. I guess HMK just figured they would tell people that the power supply is included when it's not.On the upside, since I didn't receive the power supply because HMK didn't even have it, it prompted me to look at other SATA + IDE adapters and power converters available on the Amazon.com site, and I see that, so far, most everyone who tried to use the power supply with any of these adapters, of any brand and price, ended up seeing the power supply and their attached hard drives be DESTROYED.So I'll try to find a power supply for my old internal SATA drive that doesn't blow up, and try it on an old SATA hard drive that isn't so important first. So, I guess, in a way, thanks HMK. :^ldigiEDIT:It seems that the SATA + IDE to USB adapter at the link below, a "Bipra" brand adapter, has a far more durable power supply adapter that has a fuse in it, so it would be much safer to use, even if there is some sort of electrical short...http://www.amazon.com/Bipra-SATA-Adapter-Power-Drive/dp/B001A5SK56/ref=sr_1_4... and all the reviewers say it worked fine, with no short outs from the power supply are mentioned like on all the other slightly cheaper adapters of this type where the power supplies are shorting out like some kind of fireworks show across the country. It looks like the $22 price on this is still inexpensive, and only a few bucks more than the adapters that can catch your house on fire. Spend the extra 13 bucks or so, maybe twice the price as the super cheap pyromaniac models, and get something that won't leave you with 3rd degree burns. 2Pulled data from dead desktop computer's old hard drive to a new laptopOkay, to give a little context, I needed a way to transfer data from the hard drive of a dead desktop to a new computer. The best thing was I ordered this and it arrived the next day! Awesome Amazon service, getting it to me quickly. Another great is the price is very reasonable. Again, great for Amazon not driving up prices to hit margins. I couldn't see how to get power from this thing to the hard drive (not sure what it means by 110V AC or whatever it says about that), so I powered the 3.5" hard drive by a different connector (removed a star for this). My advice: count on this to make the data connection between a hard drive and USB port, but don't count on this to power the hard drive. After making the connection and powering up the hard drive, the thing worked flawlessly. Windows instantly recognized the drive, and I was able to copy over the desired files. Solved my problem, and I was happy. 4All computer users need oneI already had one, but couldn't find it, so got another. I always use Western Digital drives for boot disk, because of their clone program. I always have a clone of boot disk on shelf, so if I crash I can be back up running in 10 minutes. Last week, like thousands of other Windows users, I got an update that had to be restarted to finish install. I had received an email from a very reliable website saying lots of people were getting crashed by the update. I was one who did. I was back running in minutes with my clone disk, but could not find my USB attachment to allow me to format and make a new clone. Ordered this one. took all files in My Documents, including tons of pictures off the old drive that was fine, except Windows would not load. never lost a single file thanks to the USB cable adapter. Recommend to anyone who knows more about their computer than where power switch is. Less than $14 and two day wait for its arrival to salvage pictures I wouldn't have taken $1,000 dollars apiece for. As simple to use as plugging in a thumb drive. 5Does exactly what I want it to do, only one problemI recover information from crashed or virus-infected hard drives, and this tool makes my job a whole lot easier. Before finding this USB to IDE adapter, I would sometimes have to tear open two computers (the one with the bad hard drive and the one that I am going to use to recover the information on the disk with). Sometimes I would worry that maybe the recovery software for whatever reason would not "see" the hard drive through the adapter, but this has not been a problem so far. It pays for itself several times over with the first use in my case. One big problem though. The connection between the cord and power supply is VERY flimsy. The end of the cord is just a bit too small for the power supply. I noticed this when seemingly at random, I would lose the connection from the computer to the attached drive. It turned out the power had gone off, because the cord to power supply connection has to be at the perfect angle, or it will lose power. If you move the cord or power supply at the wrong time, or the surface you have it on moves, it will disconnect. Most of the time, this is not a big problem, but other times you may be running chkdsk or cfdisk (probably yet another time, depending on what you are using it for.The problem does not make me think I should not have bought it though. It is still an invaluable tool for me that I now think I could not work without. Just be aware of that problem though. 4Not as shown in the picture. What I have received is not the same as shown in the picture. In a video that I saw in youtube there was the exact look as in the advertised picture which seems to be very durable and profesional when the individual in the video was explaing the usage of it.The wires that with the four pins are very loose and not secure at all. I was able to use it.....My sincere thought on this matter is that you do not need to place a picture with a different look than the one you are actually sending to your cuatomers. Place the exact pucture of the item you are in fact selling to us. Take care! 2Junk!you get what you pay for - I guess this adaptor is good for small file transfers that you can tend to. But for large file transfers, forget about it. This thing is garbage. It loses connectivity in the middle of transfers. I should have known when the USB connector had that loose connection 'feel'..this alone is usually a very good indicator on just how good or bad some of these Chinese adaptors are manufactured. Between Amazon and the vendor I purchased from, the refund was actually very rapid, painless, and fair.I didn't have to pay return shipping for this junk item. This thing may has well be sold on the street corners by knockoff vendors in NYC or as a 99 cent item on flea-bay. 1An ABSOLUTE PIECE OF CRAPAn ABSOLUTE PIECE OF CRAP... It's not what it looks like in the picture either.1) After 3 months of use the ground prong on the black plastic power supply box came out and the power supply began quitting at random times fowling up my data transfers. The board or something inside is rattling around loose.2) The power supply connector is junk. The brass connector sleeves molded into the plastic plug are not in the same verticalposition. Some are recesseed into the plug and some are sticking out as much as an eighth of an inch, and the pins on the plug are barely making contact.3) The connector cable from the USB plug to the SATA HDD is thick, heavy and stiff and is difficult to curl into the tight space on the desk. This whole piece of s*** interface was designed and built by slave Neanderthals with absolutely no quality control and absolutely no regard for their customers...I hope somebody enjoyed their kimpchy and rice that my hard labor bought them with my purchase... 1Inexpensive for what it isThis adapter allows you to connect hard-disk drives from desktop or laptop computers to another computer via a USB port. Why would you want to do that? Most commonly, people use this when they upgrade a hard disk drive to a larger one. In a laptop, where there's only one hard drive bay, copying everything on the existing disk means using a second one externally. I bought it to replace the 80 gB hard drive in the Dell D630 I bought used recently to a 256 gB solid-state drive. The swap gave me much more disk space, faster access, lower battery drain and better expected reliability than the old drive. What's not to like? You'll also need software designed for the purpose. I used Acronis True Image, but there are others. The connectors on the adapter connect to 2.5" or 3.5" drives of most vintages. Not shown in the picture is an included power supply, since a USB port often won't supply enough current to run a disk drive. A separate power supply prevents that problem. Using this will make you look mad-scientist-geeky with its array of cables, but who says that's bad?If you use it to replace your laptop hard drive which still works, as I did, it can also let you connect up the original drive again later to use as backup or additional storage.Highly recommended. 5
