Description

  • To enable slow shutter speeds to be used, especially with fast films, to record movement in subjects such as waterfalls, clouds, cars, seas etc.
  • To decrease depth of field by allowing wider apertures to be used, which helps separate subjects from their background.
  • To decrease the effective ISO of high speed film (ie: above ISO400) and allow it to be used outdoors in blight situations.
  • To allow cine and video cameras (which have fixed shutter speeds) to film subjects such as snow, sand or other bright scenes which would normally cause over-exposure.

Customer Reviews

Fun FilterThis filter has surpassed everything I hoped it would be. I like it so well I am getting a 72mm size for my Sigma 17-70mm lens. Word of caution. I took the picture of the sun. DO NOT use this filter to look directly at the sun with your eyes or through the viewfinder of the camera. Use the camera in live view. This picture was taken through a Celestron C90 Mak, with the Hoya ND400 X, a B&H 110 and a Hoya G filter on the front of the telescope, and the camera at the back. These filters where not designed for the human eye, they where designed for cameras. Looking at the sun directly through this filter or the viewfinder may cause damage or blindness. For taking pictures of water falls, this filter by itself cannot be beat. The picture of the falls where taken through this filter and frame bracketing for high dynamic range photography. When using for HDR, the over exposure photo may take 10 to 15 seconds to shoot. Get this filter, play with it and enjoy it. Hoya makes high quality filters, they are pricey, but they are worth it5For the price this is a fine filter. Of course there are better brands with ...For the price this is a fine filter. Of course there are better brands with better qualities out there but then for this price it is a great buy. You can still get great picture quality with the use of this filter.4Hoya 58mm Neutral Density NDX400I can't complain about the product nor the service. It arrived on time and in good condition. I will give it a five star rating as that is what it deserves. I should have researched the item before buying it as it is not what I expected, but that is my fault. I should still be able to use the item.5Nice ND filter for long exposure during daytime. This is a good ND filter (for me) though I am not a professional photographer and not making money for photography. I can say that it got what I expected for an NDX400 filter. The overall construction is well made and not plastic. Highly recommended for hobbyist photographer!5The filter worked great on the partially overcast day as you can see ...I bought this filter to aid in shooting the partial solar eclipse on October 23, 2014. The filter worked great on the partially overcast day as you can see in the photo. It is not dark enough to shoot the Sun on a cloudless day. I tested with a 250mm zoom lens and shooting at f5.6 and 1/4000 speed the Surface of the Sun was overexposed. I'm purchasing a second NDX400 and an ND8 filter to stack when shooting with the telephoto lens. Otherwise I normally shoot through my telescope with a solar filter (the 2nd pic). If you use this filter for any solar work DO NOT LOOK AT THE SUN THROUGH THE VIEWFINDER!!! Though dark this filter does not block any of the IR light that will burn your retinas. You must use the live view screen when setting up you pictures. Only a proper solar filter will protect your eyes when viewing the Sun.4seems safe for solar photospretty much what it is supposed to do. VEry dark, and seemed good enough to save the elecronics during the solar eclipse and practicing for it on a regular sun before the eclipse.4Almost 5 starsThis filter performs as I expected, almost no color cast that I can detect. I am using this with an Olympus E-PM2. At focal lengths of 25mm and up on the 14 to 40mm lens there is no vignetting (using a 37mm to 58mm adapter ring). I would have given the filter 5 stars except for the fact that I observed a few small spots on the filter itself that were concerning, however, the small spots do not seem to affect the pictures.4VersatileMore versatile than I imagined. I bought this specifically for the 2017 eclipse. I got some good pictures with it. I found it can also be used to add special effects to normal daylight pictures as well. I'm playing with it to learn more of what I can do with it.5A great fixed ND filter for those without the unlimited budgetI purchased this 9 stop filter after reading about a photography technique known as the "black card technique." After many hours of researching and looking into variable neutral density filters, I realized that a variable ND filter would never have the same image quality as a fixed neutral density filter. This Hoya filter was a great compromise between quality and value. While there is some change in the color due to using this filter, it is sharp throughout and has allowed me to take pictures with longer exposures by decreasing the amount of light let through the lens. The build is quality and the metal threads are a perfect match for my Canon lenses.4Good quality and lots of fun at a good priceI've only had this filter for two days, but I'm already loving it. This is exactly what I was looking for, and the price was quite reasonable for the quality. My only complaint is that it does produce a bit of yellow / brown tint (which I expected), but that can be adjusted in post, especially if you're shooting in RAW.I bought this for several uses. One of the main uses was to be able to photograph sunspots. Another use is for smearing the clouds and smoothing out the water. I haven't had a chance to get any good shots of those yet, but I will post a sunspot picture and another one taken of the busy interstate to show how you can make traffic disappear with a time exposure. I'll throw in one more, too, of a street with headlights coming toward me but no car visible. This filter can have lots of cool uses. Get one and have some fun of your own!5
