Very Useful Tool I received one of these for a gift about 4 years ago. I had never owned anything like this before. Now it is like my wallet, I don't leave home without putting it on. It is the best gift I have ever received and is the handiest tool I have ever owned. I find myself using it almost every day. I have used it for:Pulling slivers out of my handBending paperclipscutting string, paper and cardboardTightening and loosening both phillips and straight blade screwsOpening paint cansCutting and stripping all kinds of wireBending the nose pieces on eye glassesOpening beer bottlesTightening and loosening boltsCutting open cardboard boxes and envelopesSharpening pencilsScoring SheetrockPulling nailsPulling tension springs, Etc, EtcEvery tool locks in position and the stilleto action is easier to use that the fold out type of multitools.I don't know what kind of metal it is made of but it is very strong. If you wear this tool you will be surprised how many times you will reach for it instead of going to the tool box. 5Works well and made in USA My daughter wanted to get me a multi tool and since my last name matches the brand she thought it would be a good choice. I wanted a tool made in the USA. I contacted Gerber and this is what they said:Thank you for contacting Gerber Gear. I ve provided a list of all tools and products that are manufactured in the USA. Please see attachment. Please keep in mind that the products produced in China carry a Limited Lifetime Warranty as well as all other products manufactured Internationally and in the states. We re very proud of all the products we carry and stand behind them. We re particularly proud of the Bear Grylls Line as well.Should you find a product you do not see on the list, please feel free to contact me and I m happy to assist you in any way I can.Along with a spreadsheet listing which of their products were made in the USA.The knife is sharp pliers work well and the scissors are also very handy, overall I would buy it again. I did buy a second for a gift and would do it again too. 5Durable, Dependable Product The plier head, as expected, takes a bit of use (about 2 weeks) to break in the slide motion. The lock function works well and is easy to release. The scissors are sharp enough to cut the majority of needs (paper, tape, and the like) and the blade (serrated portion included) is good and sharp. The entire multi-plier as well as the accompanying case is well made and so far, durable.I have been using gerber multi-tools for about a decade and have no complaints. I purchased this product after my last pair that I had for close to seven years was stolen and I used my previous tool daily at my job and use the MP400 daily as well.Note: This is not a con as I was aware of it when I purchased them, but for those who are not sure, these pliers are not spring loaded. They have to be manually opened. 5Always display that you can handle immense amounts of pain. Used it to remove a tooth in front of my coworkers, one even passed out. 10/10 would buy again. 5Disappointed that it is not the same as pictured....willing to try it out for now I bought this to replace a very similar Gerber multi-tool I've been using for 13 years. My old one still works fairly well but it is starting to see some wear, and it needed a new sheath, so I figured I'm due for a replacement. From the picture this new one looks identical, except it doesn't have a corkscrew like my old one (which is fine by me, I think I used the corkscrew twice and it got in the way more than anything.) Sadly when I got this new one I found the metal compostion different. It feels cheaper, more satin-like. Time will tell if it holds up like my old.One big issue that ruffled my feathers was the knife. It is different than the product pictured and different than my old knife. The product picture is a knife with a nail nick that goes all the way through, like my old one. The one I got has a nail nick indentation only...and it is on the wrong side of the knife making it difficult to use since the philips screwdriver is blocking it. Right now, new, the knife can be pulled out fairly easily without using the nail nick but after moderate use it may get gummed up and need some extra grip to pull out. I have a feeling it is going to be a pain in the long run....possibly literally.I was considering returning it on account of the knife nail nick but I have a feeling I'm not going to find the old style that I want so I'll give this one a go. But if it gives me any problems in the next few weeks of use I will be returning it.If it holds up like my old one it will be a great tool. I used my old one nearly every day for 13 years. The scissors had problems after about 7 years but were still usable. The old corkscrew feature was pretty bad. The corkscrew would frequently get caught on the sheath. So it was a good choice to drop that feature.I'll update this review after I have a chance to work with this new multi-tool.Pics attached are a side-by-side of my old gerber multi-tool and this new one. You can see the nail nick difference in the knife. 3Nice little tool I bought this little tool after a friend showed me one he carried. In fact, he liked his so much he had me buy two because he wanted a backup in case he lost his. He carries it all day, every day. They both came really fast from Amazon. The tools are a little tight at first but not as tight as my leatherman that I have traveled with for 10 years. This one has large scissors that I like. The only problem I have had, (and I had it with my leatherman also) is that I used the wire cutters to cut off a metal staple about the size of 14 gauge wire and it nicked the wire cutter and now the pliers stick closed. I think I can file or grind them flat again and get them working smooth. I noticed that on some of the larger tools these are replaceable so I know they are aware of the problem. Other than that, a great tool. In fact, a friend liked mine so much I gave it to him and had to order a third one. They must think I am crazy getting three of these in less than a month. I am interested to see how long it takes to loosen up the sliding pliers so they "flick" open like the directions say they will. Still a little stiff now and takes two hands to open. I do like that the knife has both straight and serrated blade sections. Enjoy, Mark 4Good size and design, but man, Gerber's quality is really slipping. Just bought one to replace one that I lost after probably 10 or 12 years. This tool is a great size, big enough to be useful, but compact and light enough not to be annoying or in the way.I have some serious concerns about a trend I've been watching for years, however, in that Gerber's stuff has been getting to be pretty cheaply and crappily made. The belt sheath that came with this one is a cheap joke, and the knife itself is of substantially inferior quality to the decade old one it is meant to replace.I'm actually going to look at some other multi-tools, and may return this one, which is kind of depressing. 3Okay for the price, lots of flaws Purchased this product to add a Gerber to my collection of multitools. Wanted to try a Freehand or Flik but decided to try this first, as the price was okay.Pros:- Lightweight, compact, very easy to carry.- Pliers are of good quality, finish on entire tool is consistent throughout.- Tools contained are adequate for my purposes.- One-hand flick out ability is fantastic. This by itself almost makes owning this tool worthwhile - provided you use the pliers a lot.Cons:- Several reviews have already mentioned the different knife blade from the pictures here. Normally, it would not be much of an issue, but the design of the new blade, which is practically a straight cutting edge utility knife blade with no curving belly for angled cutting, negates the design of the handle. When using it for cutting, the opposite handle of the tool gets in the way. If it were the blade pictured here, the angled cutting edge near the tip would be easier to use, but the new blade, being straight, only cuts like a box cutter, but not as sharp. Additionally, the nail nick is on the wrong side of the blade.- There is no nail nick or notch on the can opener, forcing you to open it by trying to pull on the sharp edge.- Pliers do not retract fully, leaving a pointed end to dig into your hand when using it.- Fit of the pliers head is so loose, it shakes like a rattle. I know it is a compromise to help you deploy it one-handed, but it just screams low quality. If you need to carry around a handy pair of pliers which includes additional tools, then go for it. But if you demand good ergonomics and quality from your multitool, look elsewhere. 3It does its job for light duty uses. I ended up buying this to replace my Leatherman Wingman as my daily carry and for the most part it can do what I need it to do.I had to bump some stars off for ease of use though, I had to replace a towel dispenser at work and ran into a few problems.Trying to remove the screws on the dispenser was an effort for the Phillips head and had the end result of bending the part slightly from the torque, and the pliers had an annoying propensity to slip open on the Hex bolt I was unscrewing as well. From the throbbing of my hands I do not recommend this for anything too troublesome. But it is fun to fling open and close 3Not bad I've only just received this tool this afternoon so these are my first impressions:The black Gerber pouch it comes with seems very sturdy. To me it is a little wider than necessary though, but I'm just being critical. It holds the tool very secure. The tool itself is very compact but it seems strong. Mine had some very small dings around some of the edges but that is no big deal because it still functions fine and I am sure it will get plenty more. I bought this tool to use at work, mostly for the supposedly easy one handed deployment. I'm not sure if it just needs to be broken in or not, but mine takes quite a lot of force to deploy with one hand. The pliers them self have a little play in them when they are open but no movement when they are closed, I am pretty sure that it is due to the deployment mechanism. When I open and closed the pliers it felt and sounded gritty. I did the best I could to clean it with q-tips, toothpicks, WD-40, and finally a few drops of fine oil. That helped a lot. I also went ahead and put some oil on the pivot points for the other tools. As far as the other tools go the screwdrivers are about the same as any other multi tool or swiss army style knife. The scissors though seem very strong and reliable. The knife blade left some to be desired though. I don't plan to use it much though since I always have a good knife with me. But the straight part of the blade isn't very sharp for now and the serrated edge takes up a little more than half of the blade length. The locking mechanisms for both the pliers and the other tools seems very safe and strong.Overall it looks like it will be a good tool. I would just recommend taking a few minutes to clean up and oil the pliers. They weren't bad, but after a little effort they are much better and less sticky and gritty to open and close. I imagine a bit of practice and a break in period will help with the one handed deployment. 4
