Customer Reviews

Slow and unstable I bought this to replace an aging wireless-G router, also by D-Link. The G was very good, and I'd been happy with it, so I had no qualms about going with D-Link for a new router. That was a mistake. The router has speed issues. When I connect directly to my cable modem, I can get speeds approaching what is advertised by my ISP. When I insert the DIR-615 between my computer and the modem, things slow down dramatically. It runs between 25-35% of the advertised speed. The router has stability issues. We get constant connection resets while web surfing. There are many pauses when trying to watch a streaming video. My VPN for work has many timeouts. I blamed my ISP for a long time, until I started doing some serious testing.I did contact D-Link tech support, and they offered some suggestions, but nothing seemed to help. On my own, I discovered that if I disconnect all the wireless devices in the house and just use one laptop, I can get up to 75% of regular speed. When more than three devices are connected, the performance drops back down to unacceptable. We have 12 wi-fi devices, if everyone is home at once.I tested a comparable Netgear router against this one, and the Netgear was far superior. The Netgear router gave me decent speeds (+80% of advertised) no matter how many devices I had connected. Streaming videos were flawless, and the connection timeouts disappeared. These results were duplicated by a friend who also has this D-Link router.D-Link makes some fine products, but this is not one of them. Do yourself a favor and spend a little more on the Netgear N300. Or, treat yourself and get the N600. You deserve it. 1poor range for a WirelssN router I have been using a Wireless G router for about 5 (D-link 524) years now at my home. It works well, but the signal strength was not particularly good in some of my bedrooms (router in the basement, rooms in upper-level of a 2-storied house). When I bought a new laptop last year with Wireless N, I thought I will get a WirelessN mainly because of its longer range (i.e. not just because of its speed). I found and bought the router here at Amazon. It was cheap enough at around 40$, could support WirelessG and N devices at the same time without dropping all devices to G (unlike many others which switch to G-only for all devices), and it was a D-link.Unfortunately, I didnt see much improvement over my G router, unless I was pretty close to the router. When I was close to the router, the speed was higher (as expected); but I didnt see *any* improvement in range compared to my older router. I tried configuring it for "802.11N mode-only" mode (i.e. without support for WirelessG, but no luck still. So I returned the router, and decided to stick with what I have for now. I didnt see any reason to pay 40$ to get faster wireless speeds for same range. The old one still works, and has good enough speed for the rooms that it does cover.in case it helps: I work in the software development field, use and configure wireless access points at work; and have a 7-node network at home. 3Decent N Router I am no networking guy but an IT guy. So i can only tell how its working. I choosed it cause i read a review at cnet and its kinda affordable. We have been using for more than 6 months now. The only problem with this router, atleast my router, is that it displays "unable to load" message occasionally while navigating from page to page. It doesnt do it all the time. But sure irritates me at times. Hitting refreshing will bring you back in business. My colleague bought this and he doesnt have the problem. I am not sure if it is my old laptops or with the router. its certainly not bad. I have a sony vaio and dell xps. It never breaks during video/audio streaming or video chats or anything else. May be a networking guy might fix the problem.Do i recommend it, yes, unless you want state of the art speeds. my speeds are 15mbps down and 5mbps up. 3It is great router - Flashed with DD-WRT. This router works great. N300 and I got a full speed from my Cable modem with 60Mbps on the air. However, I will need to be close to the router. I am going to test out different setting to see if I am able to boost it. I have flash it with DD-WRT Rom. It works almost flawlessly. I love DD-WRT. It allows me to VPN back home and access my movies in my NAS. :-) I can go on road trip and without being bored. :) And seriously, who really watch TV these days. I replaced my old DIR-601 and I found the streaming is a lot smoother than before. And since most of the router on the market doesn't offer VPN server without broke your wallet. it is a very good and secured alternative. I bought this router used for $12. it works crazy well. I don't think I can get anything cheaper than that.If you want to find out more about DD-WRT. check out: http://www.dd-wrt.com/site/index 5Cheap router to extend your wifi range I have had this wireless router for a while now sitting on my desk, and it's been working quite well. It was very easy and simple to set up, and the wireless signal offered (while not being the fastest) has been rather stable. Occasionally, the system will seem to stop functioning (perhaps just once a month), but a simple restart is more than sufficient to cover for that.Overall, it's an affordable option to extend the wireless signal in your home. While I wouldn't necessarily recommend it for being a primary router, it allows for me to use my devices in a wider location range. I haven't truly encountered many problems with it besides occasionally overheating during the hot summer days, and it's still working very well two and a half years later. 4Nice, but questionable quality control I bought three of these: one to use as a wired-only router in my basement (feeds a GbE switch with connections to all rooms) and two to use as WAPs at each end of my house. I previously used Linksys WRT54G v4s. I wanted to upgrade to wireless N and still be able to run DD-WRT firmware. The routers are great. Wireless N throughput, range and signal are much improved over G. But the first router had a dead switch port right out of the box. Toward the end of the first 30 days, a switch port on the second router died. Fortunately Amazon's generous return policy has allowed me to exchange the second one without having to deal with D-Link's support. I do question D-Link's quality control, though. In my many years of working in hardware, I've never had two out of three devices go bad so soon. Price is excellent, and with DD-WRT installed, this router screams.I can't really comment on how good or stable this router is with the stock firmware, as I only used it long enough to ensure the routers actually worked. Once I installed DD-WRT and configured channel bonding (turbo channel width = 40MHz), I'm getting the max rate of 300Mbps. Even better, I have a couple "G" devices (Kindle 3, Withings scale), and even when they're active, my "N" devices still connect at N speeds. 4Better than Cisco I had a Cisco Linksys WRT54G2 router which made me addicted to resetting it. After I bought DIR-615 I finally enjoyed the wifi router for the first time in my life. Many people are complaining that this router is not good but believe me it is the best. Before I bought this one I checked it on CNET website and they rated it in top 5 category and When I placed the order on the amazon without reading people's review it was too late to cancel to order after I seen too many folks have written negative review about it but thanks GOD I didn't cancel the order it is the best router I ever found. I'm living in a 2 room house and it is working like charm. Those who want a router for long range should get D-LINK XTREME. Setting up router is very easy. You do not need to install software for it. When you receive your router first of all you need to check if the wifi of your laptop or desktop is on, after that plug in the cable of your dsl modem in port 1 or 2 or 3 or 4 any of them you will see the signal of dlink, Connect your computer to that signal. It will ask you that this router is new if you want to configure press yes or no. If you press no your wifi connection will not be a secure connection and every body will be able to use your internet connection via router, if you press yes it will ask you for the serial number of the router. On the bottom of the router you can find that serial just enter the serial and press yes. And then keep click yes whatever message appear on your pc. There are two serials on the bottom of the router one is for mac (apple computer) and other one is for your pc. So if you want your connection to be secured use that serial or if you like your connection to be shared by your neighbors don't enter the serial and your connection will be unsecured and every will be able to use your internet. Stay away from from linksys or you will regret your purchase. 5Connectivity Loss I had no problems with this router except for a loss in connectivity that I would experience regularly throughout the day. About every 5 minutes or so I would experience a loss of connectivity to the router from about 5 feet away from me during which time I would be disconnected from the internet and reconnected within a period of about 5 seconds. The firmware was up to date and I checked to make sure that it was not the modem or service that I am receiving through a series of tests determining that the fault lied with the D-Link router itself. I have since shipped the router back to Amazon.com and have purchased a new Netgear router for the same price as this router was; I have had no problems with the Netgear router whatsoever. The problem could very well have been defective hardware and may have been solved with a replacement D-Link router but I was unwilling to give a replacement D-Link a shot.In short, I would not recommend this router to anyone. The low price attracted me to it, however, I experienced problems that I have never had with any other router and which technical support was unable to help me fix. Do yourself a favor and don't waste your time with this router, I have heard similar stories others have told after the fact and I would not make this purchase again myself. 1Four Stars It s a great product and with excellent quality. I received it very quickly. I bought this product to replace the current product I m using in the same category and I must say that it definitely does the job better than I ever would ve thought. Packaging, materials are all top notch and above my exceptions. I found this product by accident and decided to give it a shot and I couldn t be happier. It s lightweight and durable. I don t believe I will be switching products anytime soon. If you re contemplating on buying this product I d definitely give it a shot, I don t think you will be disappointed! 4These aren't too bad. I really like the software that comes with ... These aren't too bad. I really like the software that comes with the device that attaches to your computer. The software allows you to manually set up connections, that would otherwise be set up by windows. These units can last for years as long as you don't power cycle them very often. I would have to power cycle to keep the internet working ... possibly something on the broadband side of the house. After the cycle it would get a connection and I'd be back in business. So, you get a new device and it will take along time to get a connection, so you'd have to power cycle it to recognize the new device. This is about the time the thing would fail. So, went to Western DIgital...give them a try for awhile. 4
