Excellent Remote: Please See My Custom Programming InstructionsNice to have a backlit RC71. Been using a regular RC71 for over a year with an HR-44 Genie (DirecTV HD-DVR). I like this one better for 3 reasons:1. They keys are not mush like the original non-backlit RC71. Tactile feedback is excellent.2. There is an audible "click" when the keys are pressed, giving auditory feedback, as well.3. The back-light works as expecterd. Here is a hint on how to properly program the RC71 to an HR44 Genie...the on screen instructions do not work very well, these do:DirecTV RC71 Remote: Programming A New RC71 and linking audio to a Home Theater Amplifier1. Set Factory Default: a. Press and Hold Mute and Select Until Two Green Flashes b. Press 98111111 (keep hittin 1's until Green Flash Remote is Now Fully Reset. 2. Navigate to the remote control settings and choose RF a. Ignore the screen commands and instead press and hold MUTE and ENTER, keep holding it and the screen will change and give a Menu to Program the Remore. (TV, Audio Amp, Lock Audio) b. Program the TV first! Samsung UNC60400SFZX (insert your TV's model in place of mine) c. Program the Onkyo 2nd: Onkyo TXSR605 (insert your home theater or skip this step) d. Lock Audio to the Onkyo (skip this step if you are using your TV's speakers and not Home Theater Amp) Done!5It is ok..I purchased this control after we switched from xfinity to direct TV. this remote does not light up automatically when you handle it, you have to press one of the keys which is a problem because what if you press the wrong one without being able to see it you may not be able to complete the task you want. also it does not light up when you touch the volume or channel button which is irritating to me. plus it is a bit heavy, but overall it is ok3Works just like the regular remote. Well worth it.I should have bought this remote 3 years ago when we first switch to the RF/IR Genie system. The remote is just like the regular remote only it has the backlight feature. We only use the Radio Frequency (RF) output of the remote and not the Infrared (IF) output. So far it has worked flawlessly just like the remote that shipped with my genie system. My only issue is the backlight button on the side of the remote is a little hard to use. But if you press any button on top of the remote, the backlight will come on. So it s not that big of an issue.5Worked pretty goodI ordered 2 of these back on 11/1/2015. I ordered 2 because with one, if I was at my computer desk the RC was on the coffee table. If I was on the couch, the RC was on my computer desk. I got tired of getting up and down all the time. The price was right, so I figured what the heck. Program was easy if I remember correctly. The one I have at my computer desk is getting worn out. At least some of the buttons only always work the first 7-8 times I press them. The coffee table one is still working like a champ. So I'm pretty happy with the purchase.4Once I received the right item... it was greatThe remote arrived and:- was not the backlighted remote, it was the standard Genie remote- the package had been opened, there were no manuals and no batteriesSomeone bought a backlighted remote and "returned" it but sent their non-backlighted model in instead. I have no idea how it was returned to the hopper to be sent out again with clearly opened packaging, but alas. When I returned the item and received a replacement, it was fantastic. I really like it.4Not a good replacement for the Universal RemoteNot a substitute for the classic Universal DirectTV remote if that is what you are used to or are needing to replace. This remote is fine if you are using a home entertainment system with the latest DirecTV box and where all of the components are routed through a central receiver via HDMI. However, if you have a hodge-podge of AV components, especially older ones, the good old Universal remote with its sliding selector still offers you more flexibility. Also, the ergonomics of this new Genie remote are not at all great, especially compared to the Universal. The Genie is difficult to hold as it feels like it wants to shoot out of your hand. One-handed operation for button depress is awkward at best and for some reason the designers put the light button on the opposite side. If you got this with your new system, fine. But if you are looking to replace the Universal remote, stick with that tried and true form factor.2You're welcome:)I'm mainly posting in an effort to save another poor sap from the hours of tech support and trial/error that I went through with multiple remotes. If it's acting weird and won't control or sync properly... try the batteries that came with the remote. Yeah, sounds nuts but I was seriously so frustrated I ordered a new Genie DVR from Directv because the remote wouldn't go into RF mode and let me sync with my TV controls.I read somewhere that a guy had success taking his batteries out and putting in the batteries that came with the remote. I dismissed it, well, because it sounded insane that batteries would make a difference. SURPRISE!!!! It actually worked. I was able to cancel my Genie DVR order and enjoy the rest of my weekend:)Oh, my review on the product... Love the backlit feature. It's a remote and it's very affordable. If you need one buy one and move on with your day.5Wrong Unit sent, Backlight did not FunctionThe wrong unit was sent-I ordered a RC71B and got the less expensive RC73B. The backlight button did not function at all.Very odd curved design is hard to hold and the buttons I use most are located at the bottom-thumb operation....Not impressed. Thankfully, Amazon offered a refund.1Hard to find light switch. It works my set top box like my original remote. There is a tiny button on the left side used to activate the keys. They are well lit but messing around to find the light switch is annoying. My previous cable company had a far superior remote. It would automatically illuminate upon movement of the remote - there was no switch.4Doesn't stay lit. I have to press the side ...Doesn't stay lit. I have to press the side button to get it to light up, but it blacks out before can enter the channel number I want.Update, this thing is crap. Found my old RF65, it works much better. Buttons stay lit, it doesn't take 4 tries to tune the channel I want to see. The RC718 has a terrible delay when trying to switch channels.1
