Customer Reviews

This puppy has a loud bark...but it can do tricks, so pick your battlesThe mixed reviews on this product made me skeptical..but my case doesn't have a slot for a internal and I needed it to install a few games. Hopefully this clears up a few things. So it is actually a pretty snappy drive. It really depends on your drive that you are writing to or from, but nonetheless, I downloaded a 60GB game in about an hour and a half (spread among 7 discs). ***BUT (yes, there is a but, even at this price point), while it is a cheap way to get data on and off a disc to your machine, it is ONE NOISY MUTHA. One moment you can hear the faint, soothing noise of a disc spinning inside, the next, a Boeing Sonic Cruiser has spooled up its turbines and is taking off right next to you (p.s. this jet was decommissioned for several reasons, one of which was the sound barrier boom it left when it took off that was felt for miles). So if you are gaming and need to play it off of this little guy, be sure you have your trusty headset. Price considering, I think it was a good buy, especially with 90% of my games being on Steam.4Didn't work with my macI tried playing two different CDs using this device connected to my Mac, and neither of them would open. These CDs worked in other CD players, so it was not because of a problem with the CDs. Also, after inserting the CD and closing the disk drive, the eject button didn't always work and I had to unplug and replug in the device to eject my CD.1Needs 2 open USB connections...Couldn't get it to actually spin any discs!I couldn't get this thing to work! I'm not sure if was damaged in route or not but I doubt it. Be forewarned that you need 2 open USB ports to use this drive. I bought this for my gf to use with her Lenovo Yoga laptop but the 2 ports on there apparently don't provide enough juice to run this drive. It turns on, will open and eject but won't spin any discs. I even got creative and tried to plug the power cable to my Surface tablet to see if that could give it enough power but it changed nothing. It's going to be returned.2Cost Effective and WorksThis is not an RW drive, which is fine. Few things require burning a cd/dvd any more, so this is perfect. If we can cut costs by doing that then so much the better. Seems like it shows up as a TEAC CD Rom by bios and when used with a DOS USB driver I've had for years, it detects it as the same and works fine. Confirmed Auto-detected by Win 7 and Win 10. Currently, it's plugged into a rackmount server running ESXi, was ID'd by the bios and booted/installed ESXi from it successfully. It looks like it maxes out at 24x. It is a little noisy, but not excessively so. The noise comes not from the spinning of the CD but the movement of the optical sensor.NOTE: some external CD/DVD Rom drives can pull power through the primary USB connection such that you don't need the second connector. THIS IS NOT ONE OF THOSE. You do in fact need both the data and power USB cords plugged in to operate the device. Given the price, you can't really complain - it's almost disposable at $12 USD.5USB CD/DVD rom drive: Great Performance!A wonderful DVD/CD rom USB drive. Perfect price, can be booted to, perfect for install of operating systems on the mini laptops which do not have a CD Rom drive. This perfectly priced CD/DVD rom player works better than some of my laptop DVD rom drives. On one negative point, when you place this drive on a hard solid surface and when you do heavy reading from drive a slight vibration is heard because the drive is so light. However, this can be easily remedied by placing the CD/DVD rom onto a mouse pad; then all is quiet and runs perfectly and like new. On some small mini laptops, when you boot to the DVD rom drive (To install an operating system :for techs:) the PC can not 'see' the USB drive, often when you simply let all plugged in and re-boot the drive is found and all works perfect as it should. To sum it up; Great product, fast shipping, outperformed my expectations of a small (very affordable) drive. I will buy more for our computer tech department to have on hand when needed.:::Well Done:::5Will be returningThe delivery was quick. The package straightforward. I was surprised to note that the player requires one USB for power and one for data. Had I read some of the other reviews I would have noticed this. One reviewer notes you can plug into any USB power source. Just seems silly/inconvenient.First time I plugged it in to watch a DVD on my laptop within internal DVD drive, the movie popped right up and watched without issue. Second time I went to put a DVD in, the audio played but no video. Nothing I could do to get the video to work. No prompts in the menu seem to be responsive. Unfortunate.I'll be returning this.Bummed I wasted my time.1Plug and playI bought this drive to use at my school because the new computer "tower" is a 5" box on my desktop without a CD/DVD drive. I'm a preschool teacher, so we sometimes watch video clips and this little drive works great! We have a Windows 10 OS and worked perfectly out of the box. Plug and play!5Barely works as shipped. This thing is decent, but, to be completely honest, is barely usable as sold.To start with, my own usage is going to be a little (perhaps a lot) different than most here.. I picked 2 of these up to speed transfer of DVD data to disk. Adding 2 DVD drives to 2 BRD drives helps to facilitate the transfer of some 2000+ movies/tv shows to disk. Just makes it faster. That being said, a few points and notifications.#1: this doesn't HAVE to have the power cord plugged in to a PC, just a powered USB stand (read: not battery, or portable charger). Will work just fine that way (it's how I run it)#2: As shipped/sold, the cables for this thing are, well, they're just not enough. Thankfully, you can purchase cables that are longer and can do the job better.#3: This thing is a bit loud, but not as loud as I've seen some.Overall, the transfer rates on this compare to my internal/sata BRD disks, about 4-5m/s (when copying disk data) . Just needs cables that are realistic, as the included ones aren't.3Good cheap drive for NZXT S340 case that doesn't have any internal optical drive bays!Great, cheap Optical drive! Keep in mind this is for USB 2.0.I purchased this with my NZXT S340 case as there are no internal drive slots inside this case. It worked great once I purchased a USB 2.0 back panel port for this case. Because I built a brand new system I wasn't able to install windows freshly using this drive or any USB flash drive as I kept getting a "Windows Optical drivers missing" error. All of the ports on the above mentioned case are USB 3.0 ports, so purchasing this optical drive along with the USB 2.0 pack panel plate I was able to quickly install windows without anymore issues.Drive performs well, work flawlessly so far. No issues or concerns!5DOAI could not get this drive to work. Of course, my computer did recognize the device, but beyond that when I would attempt to load CDs or DVDs the drive would just vibrate and make grumbling noises. I could not get it to recognize any disc that I tried, I tried ten different discs for good measure. I also went through the troubleshooting steps (unplug / replug USB, restart computer, etc.) to no avail. One other thing: this requires a USB plug for data and one for power. USB ports are not always plentiful. I think that's why the USB hub is listed with this drive as "frequently bought together". But if that is the case, maybe the buyer would be better off paying a little bit more for a drive that can run power and data off of the same USB cord.It seems as though this turned out to be a great deal for many previous buyers, but I must assume with cheaper electronics it is a crap-shoot.1
