Customer Reviews

Tried two pairs, each with a different defect First pair arrived with a squiggly obstruction within the left eye piece, but otherwise pleased with optics and general quality so asked for exchange. Second pair had shading/distortion around edges of both exit pupils (I tried to show in photo). The pink rectangular reflection within the gray shading cast a larger, noticeable shadow when viewing so not acceptable. In contrast, the first pair had clear round exit pupils with no distortions or shading in the view. I expect many have received good samples of these binoculars, but sadly I didn t after two attempts, so won t try again. Will be searching for a different brand though I loved the features and specs on these. 2Product showed up with an obstruction in both objective lenses ... Product showed up with an obstruction in both objective lenses. There was no strap for the binoculars. The strap for the case was twisted during manufacture and sewn into place. You couldn't fix it without cutting and re-sewing, and I was obviously not able to repair the lenses. The provider, Toy Sheik, was helpful and apologetic with the return process but I have yet to receive my refund. Enough said. 1Great for the price - after alignment tweak I went with the Cavalry 15x70 over the Skymaster ones due to the waterproof design but otherwise I would expect the two to perform more-or-less the same. I'll be using these as multi-purpose binos for star gazing, terrestrial viewing and as a simple spotting scope at the range. My first impressions are mostly positive. The magnification is plenty for my purpose but hand-holding these is very challenging. Once I put them on my tripot that was no longer an issue. A mono-pod also works very well. The image is very clear especially considering the price. The eye cups are gigantic when extended and I essentially don't use them. Eye relieve is not quite enough for me for use with my glasses but doable. The two major cons I ran into are:1. The plastic tripod mount is super flimsy. It torques and the binos shake seemingly forever on the tripot before they settle down. For some reason this was much less of an issue on the mono-pod than the tripod.2. The binos arrived effectively out of alignment/collimation and were almost unusable at first. I more or less expected this to be the case based on other reviews and the price point so it wasn't a big deal to me but this may be a deal-breaker for others out there. I was able to fix the alignment issue by tweaking the small adjustment screw on the right prism (see image). It only needed a very small adjustment. It's not perfect but now the images on both side align just fine making these perfectly usable for my purposes. 4The binocular has a very professional appearance. I really ... The binocular has a very professional appearance. I really appreciated the very and clean field of view the observator has. However, I have just one complain - it is known that exists two kinds of north. The true north, where a gyrocompass points at the Earth s geographic north and the magnetic north where the conventional compass points at the Earth's magnetic north, which is different from the Earth s geographic north. They are different because there are deviations that a conventional magnetic compass doesn t exclude. One of them is the magnetic declination ([...]. The picture I sent shows a conventional marine compass pointing at NW 334 (orange mark pointing at 334). The same mark the binocular is pointing at. In other words, the binocular digital compass suggests to show the magnetic north, not the true north as it is written and emphasized in the owner s manual, page 15 (english). It makes a huge difference in terms of navigation. 4Good optics, but the electronics didn't work in the unit I received I received the binoculars on time and well packaged. However, what a disappointment! Although the optics are wonderfully clear and distortion free, and the individual focus controls easy and smooth, the electronics didn't work. I followed the instruction manual to the letter, and installed the provided battery. Tried to power up as indicated by pressing the power button, but nothing happened, the LCD screen remained black. Then I noticed that the battery compartment was overheating. Double checked the battery polarity, reinstalled, with the same negative results. I decided to return and exchange the binoculars, as this unit is probably defective (my luck!). Fortunately Amazon returns are not complicated, and I received approval and the corresponding shipping label to return these binoculars. Quality control failure in the Celestron factory? We'll see when I receive the replacement binoculars, but I hope that the electronics work on those!Celestron 71422 Cavalry 7x50 GPS Binocular (Olive Green)UPDATE on the replacement, Sept. 21, 2016: I received a replacement order for the same model of binoculars within four days of requesting it. This Celestron Cavalry 7x50 binoculars arrived in perfect condition and work great. The main reason I chose this model is because of its built-in GPS unit. Both the digital compass and the GPS work as described, and are accurate enough for my needs in coastal navigation. I had to get used to pressing the on/off button to fix a position or a compass bearing once I had the target object under the reticle, but once accustomed to this, I was able to use the bearings and GPS position to track my course on the chart with as much accuracy as with a hand-held compass and my other GPS unit. The GPS readings vary just a bit as compared with my Garmin unit, but the differences are minor for my purposes. As mentioned before, the optics are great and the reticle and calculating dial are very useful, and as accurate as your reference heights and calculations. I give the binoculars four stars because of the defective first unit I received. 4Clear & sharp These binoculars are great they provide a clear sharp image. The GPS is an added bonus and yes it works. The weight is not too bad they are a military grade binocular, the ranging reticle is useful and the instruction booklet gives you the formulas for the various ways to use it. The lens caps and dust cap are sturdy and attached. I will probably put a better neck strap on as that is the only thing I don't like in the whole unit.I have used these out in the desert since I bought them and really like the performance.I have recommended these to my friends. 5Fantastic Product, Celestron 71422 Calvary GPS Binoculars We received our binoculars Saturday January 25, 2014 and our town had snowfest fireworks that evening. We used the binoculars to view them from our house and it was fantastic, the image was superb. They were easy to focus and the softeye piece was comfortable even for my spouse who wears glasses. We also used them to watch birds and liked the nice rainguard cover to protect the eyepieces when not in use. We also like the texture of them, easy to hold on too. Once we go hiking we know we will love the built in compass, gps mode and that you can calucate the objects size. We highly recommend these binoculars, they exceeded our expectations. 5Decent Binos It received 3 stars due to a relatively bad close focus distance. Images were burry under 70 feet. It doesn't seem much but a lot of things happen between that and your eyes for watching land features or birdwatching. For astronomy purposes, it was better suited. They were light enough to hold by hand but preferably, this should be on a tripod. Besides that, I thought it had much better features than the Skywatcher 15x70. I used this to watch Orion's Nebula (M42) and the total lunar eclipse of 2019 and it was spectacular. 3STAY AWAY - Poor quality and poor warranty support I bought these a couple of years ago and they have barely been used. I kept them in the upstairs of my house, where the temperatures probably reach 90 degrees routinely, and these "military" grade binocular's glue let go and now they are a paper weight. But they have a lifetime limited warranty right? Sure when you pay to ship the busted binoculars back to them, with a money order or check included for $14.95 for return shipping of your warranty replacement.I'm not about to sink another $20-30 into my first mistake. I thought I was buying a solid low end pair of binoculars. They got the low end part of the equation right. 1Great tripod all weather binoculars These were just what I wanted. They are tripod mounted and used to scan the hills and mountains. The optics are sharp enough, especially given the cost. Sharp images mean less eye fatigue, so these can be used for long periods. We'll try them on the night sky, once the snow clears, both from the sky and from the ground. 5
