Works great for Mac output!I always own custom-built computers for my main rigs, but for mobile purposes I've used the Macbook/Macbook Pro lines for a few years now. I love their versatility, a Unix-based OS, and the amazing battery life. The only thing I don't like is that they only have one output...but who cares when you can output any number of digital signals via toslink!Bought these cables to output 5.1 to my receiver and my Logitech Z5500 sound system (both 5.1 systems, one for the main living room and one from my other computer). They work *wonderfully*. On one end you have the mini-TOSlink (looks almost like a headphone cable) and on the other end the standard TOSlink (optical) connection. Plug it in and the MBP sets everything up instantly for great output. I realize the quality of cables has no link to the quality of the sound being outputted (digital signals either work or they don't), but the sound comes through crystal clear with no hand-shake issues and no problems at all!Definitely would recommend this over a $30 adapter or $50 cable. Buying a few more for some friends and spares =P5Connects Flat Screen TV to our Receiver PERFECTThis fiber optic cable was perfect for bringing audio from my plasma TV to the Receiver.HDMI connections allowed me to connect from receiver to the TV, but not back to the Receiver (for broadcast and streaming movies). This cable did not require the special adapter and was ready to go, right out of the box.Quality is GREAT, cable is thick and continuity is flawless.Audio is crisp and clear, no fuzziness or crackling when fiddling with the connectors after plugging in.I would definitely recommend it to people who MUST have high quality audio with their TV experience...5Never buy cables (make than anything) at Best BuyI purchased this cable for a Bowers & Wilkins Zeppellin Air that I got at Best Buy. The Magnolia Manager raved about the speaker. They even had a special display. Anyway, the manager set me up with a standard Digital Audio Cable that did not work for the unit. I did some research and found out I needed this type of cable. I went back to the Best Buy, where the Magnolia clerk told me I had the right cable. Only after I insisted that he look at the back of the Zeppellin Air on display did he believe me, saying "Wow, I've never seen a cable like that." He got the manager, who told me they didn't carry that cable and that it would be $70 and had to be special ordered. At the suggestion of a manager at another (non-Magnolia) Best Buy store in the area, I found this cable here. It arrived sooner than advertised and worked perfectly. For $7.19, it's every bit as good as the one Best Buy would have me wait for at just over 1/10th the price. Why Best Buy would not sell a cable necessary to use an item they so aggressively promote is beyond me. Next time, I will buy the speaker from Amazon, too.5Works perfectly, great price.I'm currently using this between the optical out on my iMac to my DAC. I didn't want to use the Toalink to Mini adapter on the iMac since I sometimes need to yank the cable and plug in a standard 3.5MM audio jack, so I wanted a cable with the different ends.Cable works great, no issues at all. And it was packed intelligently, no sharp bends in the cable. And yes, I've seen that done, a product I purchased that I won't name, came with extra cables, and the optical cable was wrapped in a standard cable tie, so the cable had 180 degree bends. I just tossed that one out.For the price, this is a great cable. I can't really comment on the "performance" since my DAC doesn't have an error light. But it worked right out of the box, no issues, and drives my DAC up to 96K.5I'll be satisfied enough but the build quality makes me a little ...I'd prefer a 3.5 rating on this cable. 3 is a bit harsh but I'm not "4 happy" either. I generously went with a 4 :)I ordered two cables. As long as they don't stop working, I'll be satisfied enough but the build quality makes me a little leery. Both sides fit looser into ports than any other cable I've used. When you connect them, you don't get much resistance on the way in or a really strong "click" to let you know they're seated properly. On the mini side, I even kept applying more pressure than I ever would with a cable like this, because it didn't seem like it was as far in as it should be. The fittings that cover the ends of the cable (the part you hold when pulling or pushing the cable in/out) are also loose, which is again something I've never seen, but that won't affect sound or connection issues. It's just one more thing that reflects poorly on the build quality. The cable does serve the purpose. The sound quality is as good as any other optical cable I've used and they were affordable, so that's all good. With the build quality though, I wouldn't be shocked if they stopped working tomorrow or I start getting connection issues (static, intermittent drops, etc). Hopefully, I'll be posting an update in some months ahead saying "they've held up great," but for now, I wouldn't recommend these to anyone who frequently reconnects or moves the cable around. I doubt they'd hold up or continue to make a solid connection.4Works great!I'm using this cable to connect my 2012 MacBook Pro to my SMSL SD793-II PCM1793 DIR9001 DAC Digital Audio Decoder Amplifier, Black. The cable its self is an excellent quality cable, the connectors fit snugly into both devices, and the cable feels like a high quality cable. One caveat with this cable - on my 2012 MBP Retina the round part of the plug is big enough that it partially covers up the USB 3.0 port next to it, making it unusable. I still have one other USB 3.0 port so it's not an issue at my desk.No converters or anything needed, this plugs into the headphone / multi function port on most newer Macs and outputs an optical audio signal. You might need to open "Audio MIDI setup" and configure the optical audio output to be configured for the correct bit rate for whatever device you're wanting to output digital audio to. In my case it worked fine without any configuration, but I was able to up the bit rate that I was sending to my DAC/Headphone Amp.4Connect MacBook Pro to 5.1/7.1 Denon AVR ReceiverI was previously using a stereo headphone jack to RCA left/right analog cable to connect my early 2008 MacBook Pro to my Denon receiver. With this configuration, I would only be able to play in 2 channel stereo. I wondered if it was possible to output digital 7.1/5.1 Dolby/DTS sound from my XBMC movies to my home theater system. This cable was just the solution! The headphone jack on my Mac doubles as an optical audio port. So I just plugged the cable in, and my iTunes music and XBMC movies sounded so much clearer. I no longer hear my speakers "pop" when I turn my ceiling fan on and off. The receiver automatically displays "Dolby Pro Logic...", etc, when the source changes formats from movie to movie, so I know that I am now getting a clean, digital audio signal for my receiver to decode and send out to my 5.1 theater speakers.I chose the Cables to Go version because it has a heavy, flexible jacket that will resist bending and the possibility of breaking the fibre optic cable inside. I and very happy with the quality of this cable. Excellent value for the price of this cable. Will buy again and recommend to others who want to improve their Mac/PC sound and go digital!5Excellent quality optical audio out for your computerI got this cable for my PC Creative Xi-fi extreme gamer card. A lot of computers and sound hardware has optical out hidden inside the 3.5mm headphone jack. The optical part is set back behind a small flap in the socket. So you need the toslink plug to reach the digital out portion.Anyway, this cable is thick As are the plugs and very good quality. It does just fit and still allows the microphone jack to plug into the next socket. My sound card does 96,000+hz output (studio quality) through S/PDIF digital out and with lossless music tracks the difference is noticeable if you have good ears. Much crisper sound, less mud and more detail.Definitely worth the cheap price for a nice quality digital optical output.5Three years and countingThis has turned out to be a durable, well-made cable. It's been in use for over two years now with not a sign that it will have any problems any time soon. The plugs feel quite solid and the cable itself is nice in that it doesn't easily tangle and has a great "hand" to it; not too rigid, but not too soft either. All fiber-optic cable do require more care than standard copper-based wire, but this one does seem to be able to handle slight abuse more than others I've used. All-in-all I would definitely recommend this cable.UPDATE: 2014-03-27 - Still works and looks just like new. I take care of my stuff but this hasn't been "babied." Still no problems though.5Stylish good quality cable with a problem. This is probably the prettiest and best quality cable you will find of the type. The connectors are large but I have had no problem connecting them to any of my devices, Including an XBOX 360, which has a round hole around the Optical Out that is just the size to allow this cable to fit.Major problem is that the outer part of the plugs are lose and rotate freely of the plug and cable. This makes it rather difficult to line up the Toslink end of the cable with a Toslink port. That problem together with the price of this cable, leads me to suggest that if you care not for trivial aesthetics, to just purchase a cheap Toslink-to-3.5mm Optical Mini Plug Adapter in conjunction with a higher quality Toslink-to-Toslink cable to achieve the same goal. And unlike this cable, the Toslink-to-Toslink cable can be used with any other application that requires a TOSLINK cable.3
