Excellent Lumber Storage Great System. Two pairs made a perfect 12' rack for 16' lumber yet allowed shorter pieces to be stored on one pair. Strong, secure and well made. The only issue was the predrilled holes between pairs weren't exactly the same. Having used only one rack to mark all 4 sets of holes, the last pair didn't fit exactly and ended up not quite level. When installing use each rack as a template for itself rather than using just one to mark the others. Also it makes for an easy installation if you temporarily install a leveled 2"x4" to rest each rack on while pre drilling mounting holes. 5Sturdier than expected I mounted this into 2x6 studs with 5" lags and it is very solid. I did a pull up on the bottom rung without it moving (not recommended).Note that the package does not come with wall mounting hardware (except for the spacers that go between the black bar and the wall). Make sure you buy the right hardware for the type of wall you are installing on. You will need 6 lags or anchors 1/4" thick. 4Alignment problems on multiples I used 5 sets of 2 to support my lumber. All of the arms on the (2) older ones lined up perfectly, but the (3) newer sets had arms that didn't line-up even though they were in the same box. I had to re-drill some stop screws to get the shelves level. It would seem that their quality drop recently. However, this design does hold a lot of heavy wood. 4A Great Solution This is the second time I've used this (one set for two houses).Installation is very easy and straight forward. You just have to take your time and make sure they are installed in the very middle of a stud and the shelves are level. I use a laser level for the vertical part and use a wood spacer used either on top or bottom depending on how high I'm installing it.They hold a light of weight and I've put a LOT of wood on them.I have many Portamate products and ALL of them have worked fantastically.Just a heads up! I've found these at Lowes for LOT cheaper in the garage shelving area. 5Good buy, in spite of ignorant consumers. The wood rack works perfect and as intended. I was cautious as some reviews mentioned having to adjust and grind the notches on each shelf to slide over screws . The notches should NOT be amended and the shelves are NOT intended to slide over any screw ever, at all. They would know this if they simply followed the instructions. But, the instructions are written in English. English might be their second language. If one follows the instructions, a screw is to be put in, the shelf is slid down to the screw, and the screw for the next shelf is screwed in, shelf slid down to the screw, and so on. If you increase the size of the notch to slide over the set-screws, you will seriously compromise the structural integrity of the shelves/rack. Especially of the bottom shelf/rack.So, simply follow the directions and it will easily hold more weight than it is rated for. Also, some may have gotten mis-aligned mid-tapped units. But, all four (4) of my units aligned perfectly with each other. Please note: Mountinf screws are NOT included with the rack. If you are mounting on a garage wall with wood frame construction and drywall, get 3 x0.25 (3 x1/4 ) or 4 x0.25 (4 x1/4 ) mounting screws and make sure that you are catching the middle of each stud.I am happy with my purchase. Do not let ignorant buyers dissuade your purchase. 4Poor Manufacturing Maybe the rack I bought was a special case, but the shelf bars were not notched properly to allow them to slip over the screws as they're supposed to. Or, maybe it came with the wrong hardware. Either way, I ended up having to grind and file each notch on all 12 shelf brackets in order to put the rack together. I was tempted to just return it, but decided to spend the time fixing it instead. The rack works well now that it's up, but I probably could have built a rack from scratch just as quickly and for half the cost. I thought this would save me some time, though - and instead I paid extra for a hassle. 1Perfectly adequate and a great deal! For the price you can't beat these. Obviously made in China but these are plenty sturdy and consistent for their intended use. I used 3 sets of these to create a custom lumber rack system for both long and short pieces. The screws that position the arms aren't the best for the type of hole and are loose after you drive them, but it really doesn't matter. The notch in the arm will keep them in place. You can drill holes in custom locations to place arms differently. Directions say use a 3/32 bit... wrong, you need 5/32. Also, be careful where you place your custom holes so you don't interfere with the mounting spacers/bolts.I used 1/4x2" wood lag bolts to mount into 2x6s and it worked great. Line them up and drive one lag.. If you have three sets of these lined up you need to make sure they are perfectly level with each other so your lumber won't rock like a seesaw, or sag in the middle.. While you have one lag in you can bang the top or bottom with a hammer to get almost 1/8" of adjustment. Then drive the other two lags. You need 6 bolts per set. If you aren't hanging anything too heavy you could get away with 2, top and bottom holes. A second set of hands would have been nice to hold these when mounting but if you are handy you can do it yourself. 5Easy assembly and sturdy. 99% Perfect. I had a rigged up make-do wooden version of a rack attached to my concrete block walls, but it was wobbly and clunky. The stronger steel in this allows it to be streamlined. All I had to do was remove my own wooden brackets that held the lumber and attach the steel uprights that came with this to the 2x2 uprights I'd already bolted the wall. (Bottom end of my 2x2 wood uprights rested on the floor for extra support.) Assembly was easy for the rest, minus that missing 1% from the perfect score: Three or four of the holes that accepted metal screws for the brackets needed a little drilling out for the screw to fit. Likely you're here because you have a wood shop and a DRILL. So no biggie at all.I use a lot of smaller lumber, like 2x2s 1x2s and a LOT of moulding. I even rigged up a tray/shelf between two brackets to hold shorter pieces and small scraps. This is WAY better than I could have built myself from scratch. I'm happy too that it leaves room underneath for other things against the wall. 5Decent rack. Seems strong. Broken parts I bought 2 of these. One was fine. On the other the little plastic mounting spacers were broken to bits. And since the packaging was perfect condition my guess is it was just a poor packaging design. The plastic spacers come packed in the end of the box in little cardboard tubes with them at the end the metal pieces clearly crushed them when maybe the package was put down on its end. I still kept it. I just made 1.5 inch square wood spacers to replace the plastic round ones and it installed fine. The others I was able to use the plastic spacers.. Installed into studs over drywall. I used 4 inch by 1/4 inch lag bolts. I bought 2 sets and spaced them 2 feet apart. The rack is fully loaded and solid... Except for the broken spacers, which were fairly easily replaced this is a decent rack. Only other defect I noticed is the little sheet metal screws that hold up the brackets go into holes in the rails. The holes are drilled too large so the screws strip and are lose. But since the horizontal pieces hold these screws in and only rest on these screws them being loose is not an issue. Overall I'm pleased, even with the problems... Cheaper than other options and plenty strong.Updated 6/2014I now up to 5 sets and done. And I must say after a couple months of living with them I am quite pleased. The only broken pieces in my original review were in that one first set. The holes are still drilled too large for the support screws. Yet the horizontal pegs only sit on these screws, so they are held in place fine. I installed 3 racks 4 feet apart on a different wall. This was going to be for longer lumber. But once again 4 feet just seems to far if you are really going to load it up. So I bought one more set and spent them every 2 feet on this wall as well. At 2 feet each level will hold 12 2x4s no problem. You seem to be able to fully load each space with lumber at 2 feet apart and it feels strong. Of course I'm using for framing lumber like spruce and pine. Have not loaded with anything like oak or maple yet. I've been using a level to check the pegs. 2 feet apart u feel safe they will not fall. 4 feet apart I was just a little nervous as the rack fully loaded just felt springy. Note they may have changed manufacturers. I was paying $60 a set. Last set was $75 and it is pained more red than orange. Same spacing. Same quality. But definitely redder and higher quality paint. 4The best lumber organizer I am a female, 62 years old, and I just installed these myself with no help. I am ordering another set. They are perfect for our shop and keeping materials organized and off the floor. There is a 150 weight load limit per "row". Make sure you can get these mounted properly into studs; that's the only way they can hold the weight. I had windows, outlets and light switches to jockey around, so make sure you have an unimpeded area. The brackets can span 4-6 feet apart. I had some shorter pieces of wood that I just laid on top of the longer pieces that I used to make a "shelf" first, spanning the width. The six 3" long screws needed for mounting the vertical pieces into the wall are not included; we had some appropriate ones on hand.It is so easy to assemble. First, before assembling, I used the vertical bar to mark the studs on the wall I was using. I also measured for perfect placement off the floor and so both verticals would be level and marked where the top of the bar needed to sit. Then came assembly. Each bar has six tiny holes that hold screws that are the "stops" for the orange bars. So, you find the bottom of the vertical bar, the instructions give that information, and start with that screw then slide the orange bar in place down the vertical bar,, the move up to the next hole and place the screw and slide the orange bar on, and continue to complete all six bars. Finish both vertical bars this way, and then mount to the wall. The vertical bars have spacers that go between the wall and vertical bar for each of the three holes. To hold them in place, before mounting, I put a screw through the mounting hole to align it, fitted the spacer, then taped it on with blue painters tape I had, and removed that screw. That way the spacers are all attached, and all I had to do was hold the vertical bar in place against the wall and screw it in. I then easily peeled off the painters tape. 5
