8-shelf unit conversionExcellent quality and sturdy. I purchased two units to test if they could be combined- adding a section to make it higher. With modification it works like a charm. As assembled, the 8-shelf rack has plastic caps on the top. These can be removed and then the top of the rod can be tapped with a 7/16' - 14 thread tap. You'll also need to purchase 7/16"-14 rod and cut it so that you can screw the rods together. The combined unit resulted in one shelf unit three rods high with 9 shelves and an attached unit two rods high with 6 shelves. These were spaced for dvd/blu-rays. Each shelf holds approximately 47 narrow blu-ray cases. I used a vise (with rubber padding) to hold the rod when using the tap and a dremel to cut the threaded rod. The existing thread is metric. I also had to rethread several rods for assembling the 2 units together. I would recommend using the wall strap when doing this, although it is sturdy on a solid floor. 5AFFORDABLE STURDY DVD STORAGE SOLUTIONI am so delighted to have found this solution to my DVD problem. It is such a relief to be able to see my floor again in the corner of my living room where I had piles of DVDS. When everything is piled up it is impossible to locate a specific film. I researched this carefully and totally agree with other reviewers who said that assembly is easy and quick. I have a different metal shelving system for my heavy art books, actually I have 7 of them, which I have had for years, and they utilize the same system where you slide plastic pieces up until they lock, which then holds up the shelves.Particle board is so last century !! From my experience, this rack really does not need to be anchored to the wall, especially if one has no small children or pets. DVDS are not that heavy, I have complete confidence it will not tip over. For me one of the best features of this set turned out to be the so called dividers that some people put in to separate their CDS and such. Here is what I recommend, place the first plastic pieces that lock, not at the bottom but one notch up from the bottom, then take a sample DVD to guide you in placing the higher shelves, allow one full notch of space above the DVD so it will be easy to reach in and grab a DVD. I was able to get 227 DVDS situated which was great. So as I mentioned the dividers come in very handy, I only used 2 of them, and placed them on top of the highest shelf, and they are easy to put in, and placed one on the left and right hand side as close as possible to the edge. This will help you support putting an additional row of DVDS on top.One reviewer mentioned about the placement of the so called "feet", and how if you screw them in with the back feet just slightly lower than the front, it will ease your your worries about it tipping over. I placed this unit in my kitchen, and have ordered a 2nd unit today, which I put side by side with the first one. I will wait another 6 days or so to order a much needed third considering that I don't wish to antagonize my mail man with having to bring 2 17 pound parcels at the same time. I was also surprised by how small the box was, a great design. I also am really pleased they included far two many of the plastic pieces that lock into place, in case of future breakage or damage. I have 2 leftover shelves because I was not storing CDS. So for about $75 (I had to pay tax) this is such a great remedy to my wish to have my DVDS in order, where I can easily access them to enjoy my wonderful films. I was quite shocked to realize that I have about 700 or more DVDS. I'm keeping the strap that was included in the set, in case in the future I find the rack wobbly and in need of anchoring. The directions for assembly are very easy and they have excellent diagrams. I wholeheartedly endorse this wonderful product. It is helping me on the pathway to a more sparse looking apartment. I hope that my review has helped others and given them the confidence that their money will be well spent. One other thing, at about 5 feet high, with the use of the very top shelf, and 2 feet wide, plus about 6 inches deep this fits in your apartment or home without taking much space. One final thing, be careful to place the shelves in the right upright position so there is a small back to each shelf to secure the movies. In the worst case scenario, if you make a mistake, like I did, very gently tap the shelves from the bottom to loosen them, so they can easily be removed and put in correctly. I didn't use a hammer, just my hands. 5Holds a lot of dvds/blurays!I was looking online for a dvd shelf that would hold a lot of dvds/blurays, but I didn't want something big, heavy, & made out of wood... so I was excited when I found this one! It holds every single one of my dvd's with room for more (the photo I posted is only some of my movies, I took the photo before I finished adding them all). It easily holds tv show sets, regular dvds, blurays, & cds. I have a separate shelf for my CD's so I only use this one for movies... it has 8 total dvd shelves (or 9 if you count the very top one). You can adjust the shelves to any height if you are wanting it for both cd's & dvd/blurays. I love the silver color (it matches everything in my room), the fact that it is light weight, easy to put together, & holds a lot of movies/tv shows. The only complaint I have is that one of the "poles/rods/legs" on my shelf came in warped, so my shelf kind of leans against the wall a bit, but you can hardly notice it. I definitely wouldn't recommend this shelf if you have carpet because it would probably fall over, unless you anchor it to the wall. Even though my shelf is leaning a bit, I am still very happy with it & would buy again! 4Recommend buying it for DVDs as long as you know it won't be 8 shelves big.First and foremost, I would recommend this to anyone looking for a DVD stand. Any criticisms I may have are minor and shouldn't make or break anyone's decision to purchase. In fact, I'll likely get another at some point. With that said, there are a few things I didn't love about it. Since it's made for CDs or BluRays as well, the shelving is left for you to determine where you want to place each shelf. I'd prefer something made specifically for one item, therefore giving you a more uniformed spacing thats predetermined by the manufacturer. Even still, the process still resulted in a pretty solid stand that holds over 200 DVDs, so I'm not complaining...too much.It feels sturdy enough to not strap it to the wall, which I was hoping for since my walls are cement. The building process was easy, even with the aforementioned shelving issue and I built it by myself in about 15-20 minutes. The DVDs fit nicely and comfortably with 38 per shelf. I have 2 shelves and plenty of shelve-locks left over and may try to build a small mini stand out of them if I feel inspired some day. I love the dividers and how they go on and off so easily, but I ended up only using one of the dozen or so provided, to seperate the bottom shelf where my movie dvds end and my TV series begin. I may end up moving some DVDs off of the stand altogether so I can use more of these since I think it looks nice when you can incorporate more than just rows of movies. Maybe have sections of dvds with a POP figure or some other piece of memorabilia in certain spots. Thats all just personal preference, though. In conclusion, I'll reiterate that I would certainly recommend this product and will be purchasing another. You can go for the 12 shelf unit, but I thought the price made it seem worthless, as you can spend an extra bit and just get two 8-shelf units. 4Movies fall through on larger unit and shelves not as sturdy as smaller unitI ordered this for my movies (Blu Ray and DVD collection. I also ordered 5 of the smaller units because the area I am putting them would not support but one tall shelving. The smaller units are more sturdy than this one. And when trying to put movies on the shelve on the taller unit, several kept falling through. Now I need to order liners for the shelves so that movies won't fall through when taking them out. The spacing between the shelving (taller) to support Blu Rays and DVDs will eliminate two of the shelves and also make the top two shorter than the other 5. So in reality, you will end up with 5 shelves for movies and 2 smaller ares for possible CDs. The spacing on the black 8 tier units end up with one shelf eliminated and the top two not usable for movies. Not sure yet how many total will fit on these unites, will comment later on how many actual movies I was able to put on this unit.UPDATE: On the tall unit (12 shelves which ends up being 8 useable shelves, I am able to get an average of 47 movies on each shelf, which ended up being a total of 372. This is 78 less than claimed in the description. On the shorter unit (8 shelves which ends up being 6 useable shelves, I am able to get an average of 34 movies on each shelf, which ended up being a total of 204. This is 60 less than claimed in the description. 3Great shelf, but mind the gap..This tall (standing at a little over 6 feet) media shelf does exactly what it describes, but little more. I'll get into that shortly. Some background: I have a decent sized video game collection. Media shelves hold the cartridges and disc cases perfectly since many of them are close in size (e.g. an NES cartridges is similar to a double-CD case.) The ability to adjust the height of each shelf was one of Maxsteel 12's selling points for me. That and it holds quite a bit for the price-point.Assembly seemed easy enough. Getting the shelves to rest properly on the stoppers took a bit of practice (hint: glide the shelf slowly downward and hold the stopper from the bottom as you do.) But after that, it was a snap (no pun intended). But I soon realized that the wire shelves have a huge gap in the middle of each rack. This means anything smaller than a standard CD/DVD case will not sit properly. My loose Super NES and Sega Genesis cartridges can not be stored label side out since they fall into the gap. VHS tapes, likewise, will not sit against the back rail and must be 'balanced' across the two rails.I am more than happy with my purchase, nonetheless. I figured I can easily remedy the "gap" with a thin piece of wood, plexiglass or some other "support" for those items that need it. But this minor design flaw, for me, keeps it from five stars. That being said, if you're looking for primarily DVD/Blu-Ray/CD storage (and little to nothing else), then go ahead and add back star number five. 4Inexpensive Product Well MadeWe had roughly 400 DVDs/Blu-Rays that would just pile up near the drawers they were to be placed in. I've determined that our family is drawer challenged as this seems to be a constant battle whether socks, storage containers, or video media.Knowing the DVDs and Blu Rays are going the way of the VHS tapes, I didn't want to invest a lot of $$$ into a cabinet or media tower. I just needed to "buy" time until the need was no longer there.I purchased 2 8 shelf units. Interlocking the shelves to make one larger unit. These shelves are easy to put together, no tools necessary, and the shelves themselves are not flimsy. While not a solid bottom, it is a wire grid, but didn't give me the slightest give when loading up the shelf.Lots of dividers, extra shelf holders, and tethers for wall anchor.Usually I never give a 5star rating to anything, but it exceeded every expectation I had for the unit. Such a rare find when a company actually wants to make an inexpensive product well! 5"Great all except...."The Maxsteel 12 Tier Steel Wire Shelving was just what I wanted to move my DVD collection more vertically to gain space. I had purchased a three (3) tier system many years ago and loved it and could not wait to expand when I learned of the additional shelving sets that could be added. The 12 tier is great all except for the shelves 'do not' provide the 'extra' shelving wiring support (holds media in place on the shelf) that is available on the eight (8) and three (3) tier; meaning there is a large gap between in the shelves that your media (DVD's; Cd's, etc.) rests on.This is where the company really cheapened the product (but I am sure it was due to weight capacity).DVDs & CDs, have the tendency to drop between the large gap (on the shelf) where the wire support is not there. This makes it very troublesome when removing/returning your media back to the shelf. For older media (like cassettes--any thing smaller than a CD case--forget it; they will fall through shelving.Other than missing wiring shelf supports, the unit has the tendency to be top heavy. Overall, I do like the 12 tier system. However, if I had to do it over again, I would purchase the eight (8) tier shelving units. This is why I am giving it a three star, based on Versatility alone. Cause it is really a pain.Hope this was helpful and thank for reading. 3Quite a lot of storage space, but not without issuesNeeded to increase my CD storage capacity and was looking for the highest capacity in a wire rack in black. This one fit the bill and was very familiar with the construction. The unit went together easily, but on several of the corners, they sat lower on plastic wedges than others. The wedges did not slip, but I think there is some variation in the size of the corner rings causing them to slide down ~1/4" before they tighten up. Was up to installing the last shelf when I noticed that it was only welded on one rod. Thankfully I really didn't need that shelf but was disappointed that it couldn't be used.Like another customer has said, there is enough variation in the length of the rear supporting rod that they tend to bow quite significantly. The only problem I've found is that it doesn't give you a good backstop and your items tend to be pushed back too far.You get both high and low quality things from China today. Unfortunately this piece falls in the mediocre quality range. 3A bit of genius...This thing is a bit of genius. Assembling it was a joy. I admit to a certain bit of apprehension any time I have to put together furniture bought from the likes of Ikea or other popular vendors ... so much can go wrong: missing screws, split wood, alignment issues, etc.. But this thing? A whole other experience. There is not a single screw or bolt in the box. There are no tools, other than your hands, necessary to put it together. It uses a remarkable friction/wedge based system to secure each shelf and it couldn't be any easier to put together once you understand how the plastic clips work. Personally, I mostly want to use it for my fledgling blu ray collection which grows every week (as I find good used disc deals here on Amazon) and so I used an actual blu ray case to measure how much distance I wanted between the shelves) ...Otherwise, as stated in the title, it's an insane value for what you get: it's solid, stands well on it's own without the wall anchor, things fit together well and you can use it to shelf all sorts of things other than blu rays. I'm keeping shoes on it ... DVD's on it ... Blu Rays on it ... and a good amount of CD's and there's tons of room left over. I personally had no issue with the paint quality (but I wish it was black!) ... no chipping and the metal construction is rigid and secure. Once I had it all put together, I could easily lift the entire unit into the back of my SUV to transport home .... pretty outstanding when you take into account the fact that the thing is quite literally held together by some plastic clips and friction. As a design person myself? I can't help but appreciate the glorious simplicity of the thing ... and especially in regards to assembling it.So don't be afraid. Buy it. Take a good 15 minutes to digest the (adequate but not great) instructions. Put it together and enjoy! I can think of no other such shelving system to compare when considering the humble cost of this great kit.I am only the messenger. 5
