Customer Reviews

Great ChoiceLiving in Florida (especially in my area) the power goes out frequently. I purchased these because my biggest fear is that I will be stuck in a pitch black situation and not be able to find my way in the dark. When you set these to 'Auto' you can plug them into an outlet and when the power goes out, the lights will come on. That's exactly what I wanted. I also found out that in the 'Auto' mode, once they have been fully charged, you can remove them from the outlet and the light will come on. Nice bonus. Very glad I bought them. I think I'll buy more so I'll be ready for hurricane season.5I feel safe now! I have an older home with older wiring and never know when one heater or AC unit is one too many before it overloads the circuits. My breaker box is outside so you can imagine how scary it is to have the electricity blow at night, especially in the winter. Now I don't have to worry about being in the dark the next time that happens. These are so simple and so affordable, I will be ordering more soon for every room. One charge lasts 12 hours! I love it, too, that even when plugged in, you get a red light on it to show you where it is located in the dark. When you lift it off the socket, and leave it on AUTO, the front panel of LEDs comes on bright and can light your way. I am very pleased with these as you can tell. 5This does not have a nightlight as the package states. If you look on the package it says "nitelite" function, and in the description it says "guide light.". It has none of these. I wanted a night light that would illuminate the stairs even if the power goes out so this clearly isn't what I wanted. It does work as an emergency light but that is all and I will keep it in the basment by the breaker panel. I don't understand why it doesn't have the option to be on while the power is still on seems like a missed opportunity.2Too BRIGHT! Still fantastic. I own 5...My beloved partner has a serious phobia of the dark. We live in an RV, and one of the spots we stayed at had woefully unpredictable power. The random outages were taking its toll on him, so I picked up a few of these.Problem solved.I have two complaints. First, they are too bright! The LEDs have a clear cover that does not diffuse the light, so the white bare bulbs are too jarring for my taste. I experimented with what I had on hand and ended up covering the main light with foam medical tape.My other grumble is the red indicator light is, again, way too visually disruptive for me. I covered that with tape too.I picked the Amertac brand over other power failure lights because I liked their style. I have to admit, though, that my liberal use of foam tape on that probably negates that a bit. I would love it if they had more diffuse covers over the lights in general.Upon purchasing these two, I now own 5 such lights (not counting one my mom didn't want to give back to me!). We find them awfully handy. The control switch is easy to use and intuitive. I would absolutely love different brightness options, but y'know. Also, I don't see myself ever using these as a substitute for actual flashlights, even though they're comfy to hold as such. In flashlight mode, they're temporary flashlights meant to find the real flashlights. As it should be.4Nice, inexpensive power standby lightWe rarely have power drop outs, but occasionally, during a severe thunder storm may loose power for a couple of hours. We purchased a pair of these Amerell 71134cc power failure "lites" [sic] as replacements for some old units which used incandescent bulbs and Nicad batteries. These are a definite improvement over that old technology. The LEDs are much brighter than the old standby lights, the NiMh battery life is 3 or 4 hours, and the units look nicer. So far (3-weeks of use) these are functioning properly and running perfectly cool. One thing to be careful of with these units is to insure that the retractable power plug prongs are fully extended and locked into place before plugging these light into a socket. If not fully extended and locked in the "out" position, the plug may make poor contact and/or may damage the standby light unit.Hopefully, these units have decent-quality NiMh cells that can be expected to,last for 3 to 5 years of standby use. It's probably a good idea to test these by unplugging and letting the light discharge the battery at least once a year. If the run-time drops to less then an hour or so, it's time to replace the unit5No more stumbling around in the dark...We got these for my elderly mother's house since, last time the power went out, she nearly fell trying to find her flashlights. We tested these by turning off the breaker to her room and as soon as the power was cut, it came right on. We bought four of these and have them stationed around the house so that wherever she is she won't be in the dark if the power goes out. These can also be pulled out of the socket and used as a regular flashlight. There is a switch on the side that lets you choose whether to use it as a regular flashlight or an emergency light. These are bit bigger and clunkier than a regular nightlight, but still allow for the other plug to be used depending on how you place it. Also, they are a bit too bright to be used as regular night lights, so I wouldn't plan on using them that way. We liked these well enough that we bought a couple for our house (where the power goes off regularly).4Wrapped these as a Christmas present for my husband - ... Wrapped these as a Christmas present for my husband - when he opened them, something inside both units was leaking - the batteries? So far, it's contained within the shrink wrap and I'm not going to open the packaging to see what's happening. I am going to try to return them for replacements; hopefully, this is a one-time problems as no other reviewer seems to have noted this problem. 2Every Home Should Have These ! !I bought these for my elderly Dad to have around in case of power failure. I've tested them and they work as advertised and puts out more light than the other set I bought (mentioned below).During a power failure - the last thing I need to picture is my Dad stumbling around in the dark to find his flashlights... this eliminates that need and I was so impressed - I bought a set for my home...They switch on automatically when the unit senses power to the outlet has been cut off. You have the option of the front lights to come on or the top light during such an event - either way it's very bright and you will have no problem locating it when it turns on.At that point you just unplug it and use it like a regular (bright) spot beam flash light or you can switch to the mini-flood light along the length. For comparison if you are shopping others like this... at the same time I bought the set of 2 of The American Red Cross Blackout Buddy the emergency LED flashlight, blackout alert and nightlight, (ARCBB200W-DBL) for $22.48These (as a pair) cost $17.98The American Red Cross Blackout Buddy was not as feature rich and not so impressive so regardless of the "Red Cross" implied endorsement - I would pass on those and stick with these Amerelle lights.5Great - but has a red light when not in useWhat a great buy! I looked at many different power failure lights and based on the reviews got these. I am so glad I did. They fit close to the wall, they leave the other plug exposed so you are not wasting an outlet, the work well, and they last long. What more could you want? Also, it operates as a flashlight or more of a surface light - depending on which you select. It doesn't bother me, but for those of you who like complete darkness when this is not in use - there is a red light that shines when the unit is plugged in and charging/not in use as a light. It is pretty bright. Because it doesn't bother me I did not deduct a star, but for those of you who this would bother you might want to think twice about this model.5Superior Power Failure Lights EverThese power failure lights are a MUST have, especially if you are someone with a visual impairment. The little LEDs are super bright and give the light needed throughout the house when the power goes out. I currently have 12 of these little lights and they are fantastic. When the power goes out, these automatically come on and brighten up the house to my needs. Placement of these is important to gain the best lighting. Two of these I had put in an attached garage. I have not seen them in action as of yet but with the experience in the house, the lighting will be just a superior in the garage, especially since the outlets are higher up from the floor. I use the main LED section as they give off light in all direction, yet the spot light portion is just as superior if you need to use them as a flashlight to aim at a specific area. Extremely happy with these and hope Amazon continues to sell them for many many more years as eventually these all will need replaced at some point.5Broke after only 4 months!I liked this light until I went to move it to a different outlet and discovered something broke inside and I couldn't slide out the plug to plug it back in. Since it has a year warranty I contacted AmerTac (as instructed by the Amazon seller Firefly Buys) only to learn that I have to pay to ship it to them AND I have to include return shipping costs. Since this would cost more than buying a new one, it's really like having no warranty at all! I certainly can't recommend a product that even the manufacturer wont stand by!1NOT a nightlight even though picture in detail says "NIGHTLIGHT"I was willing to pay a fair amount for these lights because I wanted a nightlight that would also work to guide the way if power went out. I read the details and there was a picture with large letters "NIGHTLIGHT" but after I got them, they did not function at all as a nightlight. I even asked a question, that was answered after purchase that indicated not a nightlight. I returned them.1
