Customer Reviews

Dims, yes...but Privacy - nopeThe product does not provide the level of privacy (any) that I would need. I travel a decent amount and cannot work on the plane or in the airport due to the looky-loos. My thought was the privacy screen will address some of that concern, knowing that those in a close radius would still be able to see the screen (60%) but at least those not close enough to lick my face would not be able to see the screen. Unfortunately, my Macbook has to be on the dimmest setting in order to provide any real level of privacy but at that point, I can't even see the screen. On the plus side, it shades the screen without reducing my visibility so the screen draws less attention so I may keep it for that purpose but definitely not privacy by a long shot.2Reduces Clarity of Retina Display + Minimally EffectiveI guess being the first isn't always the best. There were no reviews on this product, so I had to be the Guinea Pig. Looks like the gamble did not pay off. After seeing the performance of a 3M Privacy Filter on a co-workers Macbook Pro (non-retina), I thought I was in for a pretty good product. I was wrong. At any brightness above the lowest settings, contents of the screen are only minimally darkened/obscured and are otherwise almost perfectly viewable nearly every angle beyond the advertised 60 degree field of view. When putting it to the test, my wife, aligned almost 90 degrees from center, could clearly tell me what website I was on and what appeared on the page (she knew I was writing this review on Amazon). The worst part is that the screen gives an overall "grainy" quality to what used to be a super sharp and crisp display (Retina) on the Macbook 12.I use my laptop a lot for internal business meetings and off-site client meetings, often with sensitive information being displayed. In the past, I partially resolved this by having my lid half closed to obscure the contents of my display, or sitting at the far end of a meeting room table. I was hoping that this 3M Privacy Filter would be the answer, but it might actually be worse, as it could provide a false sense of security.I've attached a photo taken from nearly 90 degrees of center. If you can tell from the photo that I'm on the Amazon review page, then what good is this expected to do for some next to you with a clear line of site? This isn't some cheap $5 filter, I paid a good $40 which is as much as a decent case for my entire laptop. Pure disappointment.1It works fine, but don't bend the screen!!!Quick summary: This filter is super easy to install and I believe works as it should. Mine arrived with a bend, thanks to USPS, so 4-stars is the best I can give it. Without this, probably 5-star worthy.INSTALL: I expected it to adhere to the screen in some way, but it doesn't. The package includes 5 sticky labels (on blue strips, pictured). To install, you simply hold the privacy screen to your laptop screen/monitor, detach the blue plastic strip from the protective sheet, press the sticky adhesive strip half on the screen/half on the frame, and peel back the blue strip. The adhesive strip remains, much like a piece of scotch tape that's difficult to see once it's on. I've also included a close-up of my monitor, so that you can see the vertical stripe that will appear on the left & right side of your monitor. It isn't distracting or invasive.PRIVACY: This works as well as I expected. We'd all love complete protection, but that just isn't possible when working in public spaces. If your work is *that* sensitive, work somewhere private. For $35-40, I'm reasonably satisfied. I've included a couple of pictures for review. One set has the font set to 12pt, but maximized to a 220% zoom. More reasonably, my settings would be 12pt font with the zoom set to 100% or perhaps slightly larger. I also usually have 2-3 windows open at once, so cannot afford to give such a large part of the screen to one program (Word, Excel, or whatever). Nonetheless, I took the pic with the laptop on the table in front of me with me sitting at a normal work distance. I then moved one seat to the right & left, taking pictures from those perspectives. I tried to sit & shoot the picture from the same seated position as I would expect someone to who was actually sitting there. Of course, with a bit of effort and an awkward and obvious lean/glance, they could improve their view. The 4-star rating is for two reasons. First, the screen was bent when it arrived. This is because the postman folded the bubble-padded envelope to fit it in the mailbox. I knew when I saw it that it was going to be an issue. I installed, nonetheless, and have left packaging feedback for Amazon separately, in hopes that they will correct that issue. If you're worried, spend a bit more to buy this from an office supply store. Second, because of the fold, which you can clearly see left a bend in the privacy screen, there's a small gap between the privacy screen and my laptop monitor. This means I now have a small (1/2") blurry spot in my view. The screen material is thick enough that with reasonable care, this shouldn't happen, BUT because it did in my case, I figured it was worth mentioning. Any damage to the screen will inevitably mar your view a bit. It's just annoying, nothing else.4Doesn't affix like other 3M filters. No good if you need to share your screen on occassionI bought this for my Dell Latitude E7250. It's the recommended filter. Unlike previous 3M filters I have used, the filter covers an area that includes the screen and the recessed plastic area around it (covering almost the entire 'lid' of the laptop). As such this doesn't come with the hard plastic tabs that prior filters have had which allow you to slide the filter in and out of place. Instead the filter comes with adhesive that is meant to hold the filter in place permanently. If, like me, you keep the filter on 90% of the time but need to share your screen on occasion with others, the adhesive soon loses its tack and no longer holds the screen in place.A final comment is that my preference is the 3M gold filter which seems to allow more light through when viewing the screen face on. I've only been able to find the filter for this laptop in black.1Good privacy screen - does its jobI was a little nervous about getting this screen due to the mediocre reviews, but eventually I caved and bought it (kind of inevitable given there really aren't any alternatives). It definitely isn't perfect; it does dim my screen some even when I'm looking at it head on, and even from a sharp angle the screen is somewhat visible. However, I have had no real problems with it - my screen is still bright enough that I have had no major problems being able to see it unless I'm sitting in a way where the sun is shining on it (then, of course, I would still probably have difficulty seeing my screen even without the filter). When I'm in class, the people sitting behind me can probably see my screen without much of an issue; however, people beside me have asked me how I can see the screen with such a low brightness. If I move my laptop to be just a little angled away from the entrance to my cubicle at work, you can barely see the screen while walking by (perfect for slacking off - trust me, I checked). Therefore, it does its job fine as far as I'm concerned. The little plastic things that keep it on are a little annoying and not the most aesthetically pleasing, but after a while now I barely notice them. The filter fits my screen perfectly, so no complaints there. For reference, I have a 2013 13" Macbook Air.If you're looking for a perfect privacy screen, you won't simply won't find it, but this one is pretty great.4Does not work at allDoes not work AT ALL.If u need this screen to protect your privacy so the people sitting besides you on the plane won't see your screen, then this one definitely not for you. Because people can clearly see everything on your screen when they sits next to you. If it can't meet that purpose, what's the point of buying It as privacy screen?1Funny thing is tonight a random guy set next to ...It does not work. It make your screen a little blurry but you can still see everything. I bought it for privacy on my train commute to work and from work. But it has not helped. Funny thing is tonight a random guy set next to me with an actual privacy screen. I asked him what brand he had. he replied 3M, but an older one. I examined his and it was darker and thicker. The quality has went way down and this is a waist of money. You have been warned. Don't buy.1Fits well but viewing angle too wideThe filter fits fine, but its effectiveness is nowhere near that of other 3M filters I've used. I'd put the angle you need to be at for the filter to actually block effectively at a minimum of 45 degrees, maybe more depending on lighting conditions and screen brightness. For situations like an airplane seat, I would not expect this to sufficiently block the person sitting next to you from reading your screen - in fact, flying last night, the child sitting next to me could see my screen well enough that he was watching the game I was playing.2Not worth purchasingI had high hopes for this screen. It worked OK but the adhesives lost their stickiness quickly, having to replace them. It came with an extra set of adhesives. It smudges really easily, so if you look from the side, you can see all these white prints, which I personally didn't like. It claims that outside of the '60 degree radius' it blocks the side view. On my recent trip on an airplane, I realized my neighbor was reading over my shoulder while I had the privacy screen applied. Turns out it wasn't really blocking much of anything. Just looks like a pair of light sunglasses put over my screen.2Works with some caveatsI'll have to agree with the other reviewers. I think this gets the job done to a point. Unfortunately, with the screen at full brightness (or anything more than 50%) brightness, an individual sitting next to you would most likely be able to see your screen. I am not sure if the 60 degrees is accurate. Luckily where I am at on a daily basis, there is a seat between me and the next person, so they are at a steeper viewing angle (75-80 degrees). As another reviewer mentioned, with the lower screen brightness, you lose the absolute clarity associated with the Macbook screen. This is something I am willing to sacrifice in order to prevent people from screen peeking.I wish the installation instructions were easier to follow. I had trouble determining if I should have put the adhesive strips on the sides or along the top of the screen. The cut/fit of this filter is spot on. It fits the 12'' Macbook perfectly and does not obscure your FaceTime camera.3
